🇬🇭Fun fact, it seems like some Americans don't really know much about this mythology, but Africans, especially millennials from Ghana, are all over it. We grew up on that Chinese mythology because the character Wukong is based on a super popular TV series called "Journey to the West." when we were kids. That show was our childhood and everything back in the day. We mimic his mannerism and erthang lol. We used to go through all kinds of stuff just to make sure we didn't miss it when it came on TV-even though it always came on right when we were supposed to be in church, haha. Low-key makes me emotional watching this. Its really that deep. Straight-up classic!
omg I didn’t know the tv series was that popular in Ghana too. That is so cool! Although you do know that the tv series (there have been more than one, so we could be talking about different shows entirely) was based on the original 16th century novel right? It goes way back lol.
Wow, that's really a fun fact. I can't believe not only chinese but also plenty of people in ur country love "Journey to the West". Happy to hear that❤
Thats incorrect actually, there's lots of Americans who indulge in all types of mythologies but not because they're made into tv shows. They're just genuinely interesting.
As a Chinese person with the same surname "Sun" as Sun Wukong, I have been called his descendant by other children since I was young (although he is only a fictional character in mythology). The spirit of Sun Wukong is full of rebellion. He was born from a stone and transcends the laws of nature. Naturally, he does not want to abide by the teachings and rules of the Heavenly Court, so he was trapped by the Buddha's tight-fitting headband (the halo that appears on his forehead at the beginning of the game), which took away all his magical powers and led to his death. This game fictionalizes the story of Sun Wukong after his death, but the design of the scenes, costumes, and props is meticulously based on many natural landscapes, architectural heritage, and historical relics in our country. Therefore, you can experience the most authentic Chinese scenery! Respect to the production team! I'm really glad you like this game!
Weird how people crap on Chinese games and manhua but don’t know Goku from DBZ is literally based on Sun Wukong. When it comes to a lot of things, China most likely did it first.
@@parkmujin886 The difference in appearance is too big. You can't say that just because they are both monkeys, Hanuman comes from the Indian epic Ramayana and has four faces and eight hands
In the novel, Sun Wukong messed with the hell and he erased his name in the book of life and death , means he’s immortal . That’s why he didn’t have health bar in the intro. Updated: it’s just a part of the story, he also steal the the fairy peach, drink holy wine, and takes some elixirs before goddess party began.😂
After I learned about "Journey to the West," I really came to appreciate the story. It's full of philosophy and satire. The monk Tang Sanzang is on a quest to get sacred scriptures from the West, and Wukong is there to help him. They face 81 trials along the way, each one involving different Yaoguai. What's ironic is that most of these Yaoguai are actually pets of heavenly beings, let loose because of poor management in Heaven. These Yaoguai have powerful backers, so whenever Wukong tries to defeat them, their divine masters show up to save them. On the other hand, Yaoguai without any connections or background just die with no one coming to their rescue.
When you put it this way I can see why the original novel was deemed a political satire. It's the exact way of political life in China even to this day.
What happened at 12:00 is presumably his headpiece (given by Buddha and Guanying a long time ago to control him) was reactivated, thereby causing him severe migraine and losing control
Iirc It was removed by the buddha after he achieved buddhahood, but then this is like a “dark version” of Monkey king, so I wouldn’t be surprised if the Buddha is “evil” and just made the headpiece unnoticeable, but still intact
i highly recommend everyone to play the game in the language they want. but for the second play-through, play in the original chinese audio. I can guarantee you that the dialogue, the tonality and emotion convey will turn it into a totally different experience.
Really hope so, because this english dub is piss poor. Typical stilted dialogue and the protagonist sounds like a Mike Myers character or something. It's all a bit silly.
@@AdAstra78really?I am Chinese, because I do not have an English environment, for me, the English dubbing in the game is good, but it is true that only Chinese dubbing can show what the original Monkey King is like, you can turn on the Chinese dubbing, but do not turn on the Chinese subtitles, choose your own language subtitles to facilitate you to understand the content
I would like to share some background for you guys to get better experience with this game. A rock absorbed essence from sky and ground, sun and moon, and gave birth to Sun Wukong. So Wukong is unbreakable like immortality in the game. At first, he was a just naughty monkey with some super power. He mugged the stick in deep ocean where dragons lived as his weapon. Stick was super heavy by the way, about 15000 lbs. And usually he just hid the stick in his ear. He learned a lot from his first teacher. You guys saw he can turn to be a bird. That's one of skills he learned, which called 72 changes. 72 isn't an exact number and it refers to everything, so Sun Wukong are capable to become everything, which helps him a lot in the journey to the west. He can also pull some hair out and blow them to the air, and then these hair would become his clone to help them. That's the reason why every time Wukong died and left hair on the ground in the game. That means real Wukong didn't die. There are lots of magic skills he learned from his teacher. Like the cloud on that he can ride in the beginning intro. He got a lot magic power and many trouble. He messed the celestial court up and fought with 100000 sky soldiers including the guy with a dog. That huge axe also has a great fairytale either by the way. However, a superpower god defeated him and put a mountain on him for 500 years. Then Tang Sanzang stopped by and free him. God gave Sun Wukong a golden band and let him to protect Tang Sanzang along the journey. When Tang Sanzang spell and the golden band will gonna be smaller and smaller to give Sun Wukong extremely headache, which is the method Tang Sanzang contol him. There were also two other guys, a pig, used to be a general in celestial court and a monster, used to be a general in celestial court too. Oh, and a horse which is dragon and willing to become a horse for Tang Sanzang to ride. They overcome 81 difficulties and they all become god. Then golden band was took off after that, which clearly not, because you can see the golden band shows up again in the game. This game is a story just happened after the journey to the west. There are many interesting stories about the myth and the myth developed a lot of words we currently use. So if you guys have interests about it, you can search more information through the Internet. Hope you guys have a great time with it!
Play asuras wrath! That game is a masterpiece both gameplay/ story/ and even add manga style for each mission/ episode when your done with each one. Truly took their time with it
This isn’t supposed to be as hard as the souls games. The devs put that out already. This is more of a steady pace play through with some increasing but realistic difficulty. Nothing insane or rage baiting. Just a good solid game. They really did their thing with this one too. It’s phenomenal.
Idk I'm kinda raging already I wish there was a difficulty setting I just want to chill and cruise through the game and enjoy the gameplay and story not stress over the bosses in the beginning of the game
Lol good bait, this games difficulty is stupidly overtuned, I’m going back to the Elden Ring DLC no Shadow Tree upgrades level 1, I need to relax again
A little background on how this game started. I will try to summarize as much as I can, as this Journey to the West is very long to begin with. Sun WuKong (孙悟空), aka Monkey King, was born out of a stone. He then was taught 72 transformation and flying nimbus cloud from a Taoist sometime along the way. One flip with the flying nimbus (筋斗雲) was 108000 miles. He then was looking for a weapon that he could weld and eventually went the bottom of the East Sea and found what is known today as the Monkey King Staff that weighs 17,550 lbs (7,960 kg), and it can shrink to as small as a needle or expand as large as a giant pillar that can poke a hole in the sky. When he's not fighting or in combat, WuKong shrinks it to a needle size and hides it his ear for conveniences. The intro where he's fighting the heaven army is part of a chapter in the novel Journey to the West called "大闹天宫 (Havoc in Heaven)." The reason how he got there was because the heaven tricked him into believing he had a high official position, but in reality that official position was just to overseer all the horses in heaven, so they were all making fun and laughing at him behind his back. Later on WuKong found out, he vowed to destroy everyone in heaven, including Jade Emperor so he can take over the heaven himself and rule as the emperor. The part where there's a strange circlet appeared on his head out of nowhere while falling in the sky is called "紧箍咒 (Tightening Spell)." It's a circlet that was placed upon him to restraint him prior, as he's immortal and cannot be killed. Goddess of Mercy gave him a hat and WuKong like the aesthetic look of it so he wore it. That was how he got tricked into getting that circlet on his head to binded him. There's a chant that goes with that circlet, and it's why it's called Tightening Spell, because it basically makes his head hurt like crazy. Even though Wukong is immortal and cannot die, he can still feel the binding spell in his head that's hurting if a user knows the chant. The original story is a bit different than what's shown in the game, as WuKong eventually reached to the Jade Palace and demanded Jade Emperor to step down from his position so Wukong can become the Jade Emperor instead. Then Wukong fought Buddha himself. Wukong made a bet with Buddha that if he can do a flip with his magical cloud (aka flying nimbus) and flip out of Buddha's hand, then he wins; otherwise, Wukong loses. Wukong did a flip with his magical cloud and he was still in Buddha's hands and lost. Buddha then trapped Wukong under the mountain called "五行山 (Five Element Mountain)." The mountain took on the shape of Buddha's hand, which is why it's called the Five Element Mountain, with each finger representing as the element: metal, wood, water, fire and earth, which are the 5 fundamental elements of life. Wukong was trapped under the mountain for 500 years with a seal placed on top of the Five Element Mountain. Then Goddess of Mercy told Wukong that his master was going to arrive sometime later to save him. When a monk called Tripitaka appeared as a pass by, Wukong called him master and asked him if he could removed the seal that's placed on the top of the mountain by Buddha (Tripitaka is the reincarnation of Golden Cicada. He was chosen by Goddess of Mercy and Buddha to make a journey to the west to pick up scrolls and use them to spread Buddhism in the east.). In exchange, Wukong promised to protect him to Journey to the West to collect scrolls for Buddhism. Tripitaka is only a human at this time since he reincarnated as a monk from the Tang Dynasty. He had to climb to the top of the mountain and removed the seal. After Wukong was free, Wukong acknowledged Tripitaka as his master and promised him to accompany him to Journey to the West and protect him along the way. This is how the original Journey to the West story started. Wukong fought thousands and thousands of monsters and beasts and spirits along the way to protect Tripitaka, because all the monsters want to eat Tripitaka in order to gain immortality, as he's the reincarnation of Golden Cicadas. They have to go through 81 difficulties in order to obtain enlightenment and the scrolls. At the end of the journey, because Wukong is known for his combat and fighting power in battle, he became what is known as God of War. In the game, the story is a bit different because it's about Wukong finding his lost power, as they are scatter into 6 different relics across the world. You as the player take on this journey of finding his lost power through the relics so he can regain what he was originally know as God of War.
I am sorry to make some adjustment on your interpretation as you a have written a long and detail one, I give my respect. However, I should clarify here is Black Myth game clearly taken in the setting POST Journey to the West. The Monkey King started the Intro with 'My master is safe and the scriptures sound.' Also Erlang Shen said 'A monkey was made Buddha once' and also called him 'The Victorious Fighting Buddha...' (the title Monkey King earned after Journey to the West). The Intro scene here basically explains how after the Monkey King helped Xuanzang monk completed the Journey to the West and became a Buddha who should reside in the Celestial Court. But instead, the Monkey King has chosen to return back to his Mountain Huaguo to live among his kinds. This very action has enraged the Court, therefore they have sent Erlang and Heavenly Kings to eradicate Mount Huaguo monkeys for good.
@@andytlwang Don't be sorry lol They're not wrong, just gave a backstory on Wukong (From the source material, obviously) and a bit of guessing on what's going to happen in the game.
@@andytlwang Yes, I know it's post because of the circlet on Wukong's head, as that was after their journey started toward west, but I just wanted to let the audience know the pre-story as how everything started in the beginning that lead to up to that point. I hope that makes sense to the audience. I also didn't want to type 200 pages essay to explain in details; otherwise, we would be here all day because I skipped a lot too, as Journey to the West has 2300 pages and 100 chapters.
@@aligoudarzi3724 Indeed it is a guessing game, especially even more confusing for those who are not familiar with the source novel. I'v already watched multiple gameplays of this games part 1 and yours was the most enjoyable out of all of them for many reasons: you actually througoutly explore which i enjoy, since i want the game to be appreciated to its every Detail, and i feel like this game especially cares for Details as i'v seen special rewards for hidden passages aswell, i mean you literally fought a mini boss i'v seen others compeltly miss(42:00)!! Secondly, you just have performed more satisfyingly than others when it comes to its mechanics some people didnt figure out what the defense against projectile move was, which you instantly figured out or a move i havent seen others do is the jumping attack aswell. And thirdly your appreciation and overall excitement that you reiterate when you commentate throughout the gameplay, since i ressonate with that aswell. Last but not least just your Editing work makes you unique and Shows effort, from the small facecam, to show more of the game, to the zoomed in parts of important messages, love it all and hope to see more of that!
the only gripe about his gameplay I have is that he's ignoring and glancing over so many things. like he didn't even bother to look into the store where he can sell and buy stuff he finds. he said that it's a store for the deluxe edition. I facepalmed. Then he's just collecting the sparks and not upgrading his skills as he goes and then complains how the enemies are hard.
The last bit of animation showing the story between Jingchi and the black bear monster, and the reason why Jingchi turned into such a monster from a highly respected monk is just amazing.Perfect video, thanks a lot!
@@Adam_miller777here’s the thing, at the beginning it feels like sekiro, but the more I level up and explore the game, I literally get addicted😂 imo this is way better than sekiro since you can catch on easily, the beginning levels are like super “forgiving” for mistakes players make. And I finished the first chapter already. I plan on finishing the second one after I wake up😂
@@Adam_miller777 game need some optimization, but after playing it it doesn't feel like they interrupt with your experience. I loved the story behind it too.
I am a native Chinese. I found that the English voice and script are so well articulated that for me it is better version to understand the story than the native Chinese version. Because the original Chinese version uses a lot of ancient lanugages that is a bit of a trobule to relate things and contexts. For those a bit critical about the background information you should look into the novel A Journey to the West translated by Anthony C. Yu. Thanks all for your love to this first major 3A games by a Chinese company.
I assume that's because you're on the younger side. Since my generation grew up with 三国演义,水浒,西游记, it was pretty easy to understand these quasi ancient Chinese sentences.(I say quasi because it's still a much more modernized version of ancient Chinese, just like Shakespearean English compared to real ancient English). So to me the Chinese version is better at conveying the underlying emotion and nuance.)
@@edgarvoneverec2544I agree. But if the English version is easier to understand and offers a better language environment for the younger generations, I don’t mind those young people start with English version first. They may eventually fall for the beauty of ancient Chinese!
@@sandywang5714 I agree as well, always choose the version that best suits the individual player. When I played the Witcher 3, I also felt the English VA of most characters did wonderful jobs and was my first choice, though Polish people might just get more satisfaction from polish VA in comparison due to their culture origin.
I truly appreciate how you take the time to carefully examine the drawing at the end, not just to dive deeper into the story but also to fully appreciate the exceptional artwork.
I love how their movements and speech mimic the Wu Xia and Xian Xia style of martial arts films. Yes, the story of Sun Wukong has been done so many many MANY times, but it's good to see that there are still ways to reinvigorate the love for mythology. Hope there's more games like this about other Asian myths like in the Philippines...
Such a classic. I believe almost all Asians grew up in 90s are well versed in Journey to the West" especially the one being potrayed by Dicky Cheung. Back then what we watch is depends on what being broadcasted on the TV, so majority of us shared this memories growing up.. So excited and hype for this game. Highly recommend to Hollow to use the chinese audio voice over. I mean just by the watching the trailer alone, it gives me chill. Elevated experience compared to the english voice over. Maybe some context as well 12:00 that's SunWuKong headpiece being activated(the headpiece was given by the Buddha to SunWuKong's master, so that the master can control him), in which causing him great pains. 1:01:25 that's actually a traditional coffin SunWuKong's hair is said can be used to transform into something else, like shown in this gameplay, it can be an incense, a shadow of himself, and many other things. The staff that SunWuKong uses can shrink or enlarge as needed. As you can see the staff is being stored on his ear by shrinking it. And the staff can be enlarge for battle or other stuff.
I had watery eyes when the final end music started. It started with a crystal- clear child’s voice, then joined by an adult’s one, which was much deeper and richer. It reminded me of the childhood memory when we had to watch the original 1980s TV series during our summer holidays, each year, every year. We know the story so well that all of the characters are like old friends. Now my kids have also watched it many times. I am so glad the the Chinese culture is being loved, celebrated and inherited by generations. Let’s all enjoy the game! World peace❤❤❤
For those who may not know, Wukong is a legendary figure known as the protector of pilgrims, particularly a monk who embarked on a journey to the West in search of Buddhist scriptures. Wukong didn’t protect these pilgrims out of his own desire; he was compelled to do so after he caused trouble in heaven and was punished by Buddha. As a result, he was imprisoned under a mountain for 500 years. The compassionate monk, upon seeing Wukong's pleas, released him from his imprisonment. However, Wukong is known for his uncontrollable nature, doing whatever he pleases. To keep him in check, he was made to wear a golden headband that causes him to experience painful headshocks whenever he steps out of line or engages in mischief. He is shown as a good character in Tibetan folklore but at times, it feels he has negative sides too. I am now going to go buy this game and play. =)
and he literally erased his name from the book of hell, granting him immortality, ate like 7 divine fruits which, also, granted him immortality😂 and also many more so I believe he has a total of 7 layers of immortality😅
I really would recommend that everyone play in the original Chinese voice over with subs. The emotion and translations are way more investing! Also in the beginning, I love that you mention Wukong is arrogant. He's supposed to be. He was written that way in the novel too.
whilst everyones talking about the storyline of this game, id like to take a minute to appreciate that intro?! this is probably one of the coolest game intros ive seen. As a games art student at uni whos hoping one day to make games like these, i cant help but observe the amount of hard work they've put in for that intro scene. I recently have had to animate too, and i can say it is a nerve wracking experience. The time and patience you need to animate is incredible and tbh i dont have that so seeing an animation like that especially in 3D (bit harder than 2D imo) surprised me SO MUCH. It is SUCH hard work. Just that bit of them fighting mid air probably took a month to animate...? give or take bc theyre professionals but you get the point . The detailing of the costumes the soldiers wear and the monkey king is absolutely crazy. I dont even want to imagine how long it took them to sculpt that in 3D....mad respect for the devs.

It's so fascinating seeing mythology from your own culture interpreted for a mass audience like this. There have been a lot of movies and TV shows I've watched (or heard of) growing up, and every iteration is different. This game is unique, in that it manages to create a new story while staying consistent with existing Chinese mythology. Most people are familiar with Sun Wukong's journey to retrieve some Buddhist scriptures with a monk (his master), but this story takes place after all of that. So there's a lot more narrative generosity, so to speak.
@@Crowlo17 okay does a movie tell the whole book? No so you will miss a lot because it’s meant to entertain but the real story is about understanding and freedom. It’s more than a story but teachings about reflection and way more. It’s not gonna get the full respect in a game format so if you wanna know the real story then you gotta look it up. The Buddha is a real title held by the people who understand and live accordingly. Plus the game is the outside source on this one taking from the story to share with the player. Yeah, it’s starting off way deep in the story. They locked him in the mountain but before he got the headband on which makes no sense. The monk brings the headband from the Buddha and has the monkey wear it after the 500 year seal is released. Actually play the game first, then look up the story. It’s easier to experience and then understand the Bible.
@@Crowlo17 You are trying to encompass one of the best (Chinese) and massive literary work that delves into spiritualism, self purification and other aspects of practice. This game was about 16 years in the making. There were a lot of politics around it. The creator wanted to develop a triple A single-player game and managed to convince Tencent games to fund a few millions to start the development. It turned out that the game development required more significant funding than the company was willing to pay up and rather focus on pay-to-win games. The team eventually disbanded. The creator worked with a lead game developer and a few other younger developers and started Game Science. They needed funding and of course, feed themselves, so they created two pay-to-win games that were quite successful. They generated enough capital to focus on Black Wukong and after several years, here we are today. :)
The beginning you said " a little arrogant" That is part of the lesson of Wukong. His downfall was due to that arrogance and his return was him learning humility. He came back stronger.
Ah. AHH. I saw this was dropped and I was searching playthrough to watch! I am so hyped but also so upset I didn't notice that you had posted it because your commentary is delightful.

You got this completely correct! 😂
When you put it this way I can see why the original novel was deemed a political satire. It's the exact way of political life in China even to this day.

I believe it was deactivated that's why he couldn't counter the attack. I could be wrong though.
Iirc It was removed by the buddha after he achieved buddhahood, but then this is like a “dark version” of Monkey king, so I wouldn’t be surprised if the Buddha is “evil” and just made the headpiece unnoticeable, but still intact
@@suge4963 deactivated?
@@suge4963 If it was deactivated how come his power is restrained? What you say doesnt make sense to me?
@@suge4963 The headpiece is to cause him severe headache so it prevented him from counter-attacking, it's not a source of his power.
i highly recommend everyone to play the game in the language they want.
but for the second play-through, play in the original chinese audio. I can guarantee you that the dialogue, the tonality and emotion convey will turn it into a totally different experience.
Really hope so, because this english dub is piss poor. Typical stilted dialogue and the protagonist sounds like a Mike Myers character or something. It's all a bit silly.

As a Chinese, my superhero from childhood suddenly being well known globally makes me cry.
Thank you
this made me even more interested omg

The game uses 2D animation, stop-motion animation, and black-and-white animation from the 1960s and 1970s.

Yeah right , it’s super hard - harder than elden ring
Lol good bait, this games difficulty is stupidly overtuned, I’m going back to the Elden Ring DLC no Shadow Tree upgrades level 1, I need to relax again
Especially since the graphics look so good. Before this game, Game Science made Mobile Games!
Thank you so much, I miss a lot of stuff sometimes , but happy you enjoyed this one 😅
the only gripe about his gameplay I have is that he's ignoring and glancing over so many things. like he didn't even bother to look into the store where he can sell and buy stuff he finds. he said that it's a store for the deluxe edition. I facepalmed. Then he's just collecting the sparks and not upgrading his skills as he goes and then complains how the enemies are hard.

This is what a real action/adventure game is supposed to be!! Amazing!!
不懂古文 不是可以正好学一学吗 😅

12:00 that's SunWuKong headpiece being activated(the headpiece was given by the Buddha to SunWuKong's master, so that the master can control him), in which causing him great pains.
1:01:25 that's actually a traditional coffin
SunWuKong's hair is said can be used to transform into something else, like shown in this gameplay, it can be an incense, a shadow of himself, and many other things.
Good explaination he also special..came from a stone mixed of heaven and earth that give birth to monkey😂
and he literally erased his name from the book of hell, granting him immortality, ate like 7 divine fruits which, also, granted him immortality😂 and also many more so I believe he has a total of 7 layers of immortality😅

whilst everyones talking about the storyline of this game, id like to take a minute to appreciate that intro?! this is probably one of the coolest game intros ive seen. So there's a lot more narrative generosity, so to speak.

it's actully the first AAA game made in China, so it is right now the top topic through out entire China, quit influencial.

I come from China and like this game very much. I watched several people's game videos and decisively subscribed to you. That's great.👍
Basically this is China’s GOD of War I would love to see mythos in games
You have the best graphic quality among all youtube streamers, that's so satisfying
Beeennn waiting for this walkthrough
the game look cool and great . i dont understand why IGN and other jurno complaint about this game ... GOTY for sure
Because the developers didn’t bend the knee to western journalism’s obsession with DEI essentially. Goes way deeper but that’s the summary
They lost/didnt successfully extort 7 million dollars from Game Science😂😂
I can hear Frieza now “Monkey’s on a nimbus you say?”
deeply impressed by the English translation, something one would exoect less, but it seems to be perfact representation of its Chinese origional scripts.
Wanted to watch this gameplay from someone. Thanks for this! Loved the gameplay as well as the story, thanks for taking it slow :)
About to play right now! Thanks for the video bro!
the graphic of this game looks as good or even better than God of war to me, but its also feels nostalgic. Reminds me of ps2 games like Onimusha & Shinobido maybe its because of the camera angle and third person perspective.. definitely the chinese take on God of war
This game looks insane !!
