- Although he was one of the most important Americans of the nineteenth century, most Americans don't know much about William Henry Seward other than that he purchased Alaska. Walter Stahr, author of the acclaimed new biography "Seward: Lincoln's Indispensable Man," shares insights into this powerful and fascinating figure in a July 24, 2013 lecture sponsored by the School of Continuing Education and Summer Sessions.
I am Seward’s great great niece...so proud to be a descendant of this man.

I've been trying to find other people related to him. He's my Grandmother's Grandfather. Although it's really hard to find people related.
Same! My grandmother’s maiden name was still Seward and her grandfather was William Seward. She always tells each of us about how her father described the man. Does this make us distant cousins?
@@ryanblanch2764 Haha no clue! Depends on where your family grew up. My grandmother was raised in California, and from what I know she never had any siblings. If we were to be related, it'd be from William Seward Jr who had quite a few children if I'm remembering correctly.

I have doubts, (as Walter Stahr also does), that Seward knew anything about John Brown's plans at Harpers Ferry. Seward was a man of official method, and would never have approved of such an ill fated, doomed, grandiose plan.
John Brown also would never have waited for the approval or complicity of a conformist politician. John Brown's rash actions were those of a courageous but reckless populist reactionary who saw an opportunity to support a cause as a national hero or historic martyr.
Thank the Lord the US Marines Corps took that lunatic out when they did. I read the diary of Anna Jackson and she said her husband was there at his execution and Brown refused a clergyman before his hanging. He was out of his mind.

I am William’s great great grandnephew apparently although I am not so sure how true that is but I have heard that from my dad who heard it from his dad and so on and so forth
He's kind of glossing over the fact that early on Seward wanted a war with Britain to unite the country.
he tried to sum up a mans life in a little over an hour! i don't think he glossed.
He was willing to fight the British if they officially supported the confederacy.

It was an act of war for Lincoln to send the USS Harriet Lane and that fleet to capture Fort Sumter. Due to bad weather it was delayed and the American Confederate Army prevented the capture of Fort Sumter by those Lincoln cutthroats.
My position is pro-secession even though I think the union would be better for America however I do agree it makes no sense that a fort of a seceding state is not transferred to the Confederacy. I need help.
