Whoa… TRF is incredibly passionate about his Palomar… Great video! The Crazy Alberto is so easy, it’s saving me money on the MIT degree required to figure out the FG!
I bought an FG knot 2.0 tying tool- it made all the difference in the world for me. Too many anglers say their way is the best and simplest way to do it without using mouth, rod, legs, etc.- then when they show you how they tie it- they STILL use their mouth, legs, ears, nose, family members, etc. LOL! Their way is impractical to do on a boat, and certainly impractical on a kayak!
@Flukemaster showed an easy way to tie the FG using the rod/reel to create the tension. I can't find his video but basically you put a loop in the braid and put the loop on the reel handle creating a bow in the rod and thus the tension. Simple and easy even on the water.
Outstanding. Knots are something people overcomplicate. I think Tyler stressing the dont rush a knot is great advice. No one seems to say that or do it in tutorials cause they just want to be done with it and next video.
That was a pretty ingenious way that Chad ties an FG. Ott Defoe has a video out on the FG knot and it is the easiest way I’ve found to tie it. I use the Alberto too as a quicker option while on the water but sometimes I’ll get wind knots from that leading tag end catching as it goes through the guides (especially on spinning gear) the FG only has one tag end and its the trail side going through the guides so it won’t catch on anything.
Same for me. I feel that the Uni/Uni slips through the guides more smoothly. It is a knot that is so easy I can tie with my eyes closed (with a little peeking 😉). The Blood knot is even smoother because the tags terminate in the middle of the knot instead of the ends. It is more difficult to tie correctly, so I use a little Blood Knot helper tool that I found online.
I’m fairly new to fishing and not super consistent with tying a proper knot. I was out for 4+ hours today and caught ONE baby bass, only for my knot to fail before I could land it! Sooooo here I am, trying to commit these to memory so when I catch a big one it won’t get away.
For those using the FG on lighter lines I prefer closer to 30 wraps, you honestly can't have too many. Also 4 overhand knots (2 both directions) to finish is plenty, a rizzuto finish if you want to to create a more barrel-shaped knot on top of that can improve the knot passing through your guides even further. Anchor the lines on your hands, its MUCH easier than trying to create tension with a rod etc and will allow you to tie the FG on the water in wind/rain or whatever conditions you might find yourself in.
Will definitely give it a try Will do my own break test VS a Trilene knot All I have used in the last 40+ years of fishing has been either the Trilene or Palomer knot Trilene for all larger baits and Palomer for smaller baits hooks and all braided lines.
Great video. Would love to learn more about how you apply these knots to your favorite baits. For example what's your go to knot for a spinnerbait, crankbait, etc.
I like a uni knot for most situations. And a double uni for braid to leader look it up its super easy and holds good. I did try that Pitsen you showed that's a good one.
Hey There...I've got a question about your double pitzen knot. Do you ever vary the number of wraps based on line test? SoP seems to use more wraps for lighter lines. Thoughts?
I can simplify it even further. Single uni for 75% of lures. Double line uni for hard hook sets or guys who can’t sleep at night, FG for braid to fluoro leader using Ott Defoe’s technique. I don’t even bother with the Palomar anymore.
That FG knot is amazing to use! I had issues with using the Double Uni with 25lb braid to 12lb Leader getting caught in the guides causing back lashing losing baits... I recommend the FG Knot hands down!
16:25 he ties the crazy alberto a little differently than normal, normally the tag end comes out the same loop as the tag end in the same direction. i think ill give it a try.
Thank you so much for this. I am new to the hobby and was learning to tie the FG knot from a ton of several sources. I always ended up with a knot that I felt was hindering my casting distance. I finally figured out the Alberto knot and it is small and actually easier than the FG as it doesn't require tension. It will be for sure my braid to fluoro leader knot from now on. As for the Palomar, I learned another one which is similar but I can do that very well now so I will probably stick to it. But thanks for this video, really awesome you put it together.
I've been tying the "improved clinch" for the past 27 or so years. I've not had any issues however most people I speak with try to show me other knots they claim to be "better" I understand the snell has a certain place but what is the drawback of this knot that everyone seems to speak of when they talk to me about it.
Do you find that using a palomar with fleurocarbon tends to cause it to break? It's my favorite knot with braid, but I can't figure out how to make it work with Fleuro
I mostly use the improved clinch, been using it since I was a kid. Sometimes I'll forgo the improved and just do a clinch. I tried picking up the Palomar a couple months ago, but I have issues with it sometimes. Clinch is just more consistent for me. For joining I use a double uni. The Davy knot has also worked great for me, I need to work on that one some more.
Cool knot the cross hatch whatever Alberto knot, not sure what I'll use it for being a return fisher men (about 10 years since I have been fishing, so whatever that's called that's what it is, learning some complex knots may come in handy at some point), going through about 5-10 videos every 24 hour period, figuring out what is worth keeping, subscribing to, grabbing a few playlists etc. it is a lengthy process of learning! If you do not enjoy learning? This process is not for you lmao!
Sup. Never heard of some of the knots, will take practice! Problem with stren braid solved, box said 30lb test but actual spool says 6lb! Someone must of switched in store to save money? Ty
Hello, when i finish tying the double pitzen i feel like my wraps are not in perfect order, is that ok?( i dont know if the knot is tied perfect or im doing it bad) i have tried several times. Thank you!
Alberto knot is my go to braid to leader line, much easier and hassle free compared to FG, and better than simple leader knots like the double uni in every single way
Alberto for the win. The FG is nice but look how long and bulky it is. And what a pain to tie correctly. The crazy Alberto improved Alberto which is the same just add 3 extra loops at the very end is super strong I flip with it which means I’m using it for every technique except frogs
I am all about that bass and you can sure catch em I made a bass video lately caught over 50 smallmouth bass I 2 hours mostly around 12 inches but it was a great day but now with winter approaching all I can do is watch others fish lol I would do ice fishing but I am only 15 so I can’t drive to a spot!
My uni to uni knot for braid to fluoro works great. If it ever breaks, it is at the main line. Not the knot. The fg knot seems a little overkill. Although, it does seem a bit longer and more slender so it's probably easier on your guides.
i usually use braid or mono because i always hear stories about flouro braking easily , i recently bought a spool of 15 lb seagar 100 % flourocarbon it worked ok on one of my spincast setups didn't break but didn't catch any real big fish either so on my spinning setup is a lews mh fast with a diawa revros 4000 and i use 30 lb braid on most all my setups so anyway i use a swivel about 18 inches above my hook and fluke so i tied the leader from swivel to fluke n hook with fifteen lb flouro good seagar brand and the first fish i set the hook on it broke clean off the swivel i tied the flouro with uni knots and wet them good before i sinched them down so i just put my braid back in place and went back fishing i do not like flouro even more after this , it is stiff and twist really bad , change my mind please because i want to use flouro but i don't trust it , maybe a different knot will help me out
I see so many people call that double pitzen a double uni, I assume because it's doubled over and kind of tied line a UNI.... but the double uni I know is literally two uni's to join a line to leader using two actual uni's on either end.
Love the vid! Good to see my go to knot used for braid to leader. I started my fishing adventures using the Trilene knot for my baits...so many tears later, I landed on the San Diego jam...that's been a solid knot for me. I will be practicing these knots though. Thanks for the post!
I've tried both the FG and the Alberto.. The GT knot makes an ass out of both when it comes to the size of the knot, ease in tying, and strength. I can tie one in 20 seconds. The knot doesn't have to be difficult to get the same results and IMO just as strong if not stronger. Have never had one slip.
If you prefer one knot over another, by all means do it. But for those reading, the GT does not outperform a well tied FG. The GT is thicker so will contribute to more guide contact and is basically a fluoro over fluoro overhand knot. Fluoro tends to cut itself and this will weaken the GT considerably vs the FG. Yes the FG is a pain to learn to tie, but its worth it, especially in finesse setups.
@@adamb306, to each his own buddy. That's my opinion after using both and if you don't like it that's tough shit. I use this knot all the time with braid to fluorocarbon and mono and it works perfectly and I have never had one fail.. You sit there and tie your complicated knot and I'll be fishing.
@@JustMe3104 It isn't complicated, it does take practice to be proficient. Like I said previously, if you like something go with it, but objectively speaking all knots are not created equal. It also depends on which version of the GT you are tying as there are many knots being called a GT on youtube, and only one which performs favorably when compared to the FG (on heavy tackle). That version of the GT is FAR more complicated, involving a bimini and multiple wrappings. And if you're tying that great, but again I doubt very much you'd call the FG knot "complicated" by comparison.
I would have no problem with the FG being 1,000 times stronger than the Alberto, and still tying the Alberto. It’s never failed on me and even with the maybe 10 times I’ve had to tie it on, I could tie it in a minute and a half tops Btw, you’ve done a lotta great things with your videos but none as good as having Mikey on here. He’s the man and a dude’s dude! You should do some actual fishing collab with him next
If you have rods with micro guides the fg knot is the way to go if you're going to use a leader. I wouldn't really finish it with all those over hand knots though, you can see how the way he finishes his fg it gets so bulky. He doesn't even cinch down his fg knot, he just ends it with 10 over hand knots. The technique to tie the fg is good but don't finish it like that
I've been trying to tie the Palomar for years and it's the only knot I have consistent issues with. Seems like no matter what I try, no matter how wet (literally under water) or slow I go, it always fully tightens before the loop pulls down, leaving me a tight knot, with a big loop hanging out of it. I can tie more complicated knots all day long, but the easiest knot out there? Nope. It doesn't work for me.
FG knot not the thinnest after you overhand the fluorocarbon then it’s all cap it’s literally supposed to be 1 fluorocarbon thick as opposed to Alberto or whatbe any of your other grandpas knots
Nah I spent all this time learning fancy knots…huge waste of time I literally tie an improved clinch for everything now takes 3 seconds…haven’t lost a fish due to the knot or line snapping other than due to rubbing on rocks/zebra muscles…even punching I tie the same damn knot and noticed 0 difference from tying a snell

A year later and this video is still helping people . We need more collaboration videos between people in the fishing community.
I LOVE the Palomar knot. Fast and easy.

That is the original way it was shown when you started seeing the vids from Asia years ago.
Definitely some knots I need to learn. I've always just used the simple fisherman knot it's simple and never lost a lure unless line snapped.
Bro I absolutely love your videos man . So informative and entertaining. Thanks so much. Have a great day. From North Carolina
I used to tie the alberto knot but have gone back to the double uni knot instead. It's a smaller knot and is much easier for me to tie quickly.

The Crazy Alberto knot works better for light lines near the same diameter as it is super strong and much easier to tie

Trilene for all larger baits and Palomer for smaller baits hooks and all braided lines.

I’ve used the improved/advanced clinch knot only in fresh and saltwater for over 40 years and it has never failed me…🎣
Great video. Keep them coming.
@Mikeybalzz! That dude cracks me up.. Great vid brah
I love the first-knot mark zona called it the shark knot

Might want to cinch that FG knot before you finish it. There’s an easier way to tie tie it for sure and it’s super clean
I tell people fishing around me all the time that the knot you tie is the most important part of your equipment then i teach them a couple of my best.
