He played traditional blues in the late 50’s then switched to funk with synthesizers. He was one of the greats. He also mentored Etta James on how to become a touring musicians and how to sing ballads.
Johnny Was the truth with his band "The Watsonian Institute'. I used to like jamming this tune in my pops "Stanking Lincohn". Back in the mid 70's. With that gangster lean. 😁😁🎤🎤🎸🎸
Great request! Hadn't heard Johnny Guitar Watson in quite awhile. He's a great vibe! Hope you react to more of his music as others have mentioned. And yeah Ashley, this is definitely the music era you should have born in!🤗
Way to go, Ashley, now you're exploring the heart of the gold mine! Thank you for this 😊 I'd like to submit a recommendation for a fantastic oldie called "Drift Away" by Dobie Gray. I think you'll find it to be gorgeous and emotional, very touching. Stay well. 😇🌹✌️
JGW was always an awesome blues man - he started in the 1950's headspinning with a guitar playing "Space Guitar" - later "Ganster of Lover" or "Booty Ooty" - great picks today - all three: Whodini, JGW + Todd Rundgren of Nazz Fame.
I used to have his album: "What The Hell is this". I'm now into CD's I haven't got much space. "Real Mother For Ya" is an amazing song. It was a major hit - at least in Europe. His voice is excellent and his guitar playing is very unique. He worked with Frank Zappa, Johnny was his hero and they became friends, and later sang (i think 5) songs in Zappa's band. Listen to "Andy" by Frank Zappa. JGW sings like his life depends on it. Sadly he died on stage at the young age of 61.
Hol on Ashley, D'Angelo askin how does it feel while The whispers getting you "in the mood" for Johnny Guitar Watson to try to "Ta Ta You Baby"...I'm tellin yo husband. 😅
Johnny "Guitar" Watson career spanned from the 1950's to the 1980's. The highlight of his career was the 1970's with songs like Aint that a Bitch, Real Mother for Ya, and Superman Lover. He was Etta James biggest influence. If you listen to his early stuff you can hear were Etta James got a lot of her vocals style. Etta James said on many occasions that Johny Guitar Watson was her biggest influence she tour with him a lot in her early years. Although Guitar was his main instrument he was a multi instrurmentlist.
This wasn’t a hit and I have no idea why! Every time I play this for someone who never heard it …they just freak out about the instruments, the smooth arrangements, Johnny’s sick vocals…they’re just blown away and wonder how they never heard it before.
Johnny Guitar Watson was that DUDE! His album Real Mother For Ya is an all time greatest R&B/funk blues albums ever! From start to finish!
This is the show stopper, there's nothing else after this
The instruments on this alone was absolutely off the rails !
