    I know I'm dating myself but I remember riding this line thousands of times to go everywhere in the city, to high school, college, shopping, visiting relatives, work,and transferring to see the Mets at Shea. All for 15 cents a token. My last ride was in 1966 when I took the subway to join the military, never to return. I live in California now but I will always remember my home town, New York. Thanks.

      I, too, rode this to High School and College, and to see, after transfer, the Yankees. And switched to the 7 to see the Mets and my girlfriend.

    This is a very well made video with a crisp clear quality view. Good job! It's been years since I've been in my old Bronx and I can see how much this line has changed. Stations look updated, metal gangways next to each track, and of course the new "techno-trains". I miss the Red Birds, but I'm glad that things appear to be much cleaner.

    I’m sure the original designers of the IRT system in 1900 never dreamed that their work would not only still be in daily use 120 years later but would still be a vital part of the system.

  • @paktype
    @paktype 9 ปีที่แล้ว +16

    The "layup" tracks to the south of Brooklyn Bridge were once used to connect the IRT Lexington local to the downtown IRT stations of Fulton Street, Wall Street and Bowling Green. The local would then terminate at the inner station at South Ferry. The connection at Brooklyn Bridge was severed in the 1960's because the curve connecting the local tracks to the express tracks at Fulton Street was too sharp for newer trains to negotiate safely without traveling very slowly. This caused bottlenecks on the line so the connection was cut. The remaining tracks are layup tracks today.

      Robbi496 Parts of the L predate the NY Subway. In the 80s the MTA, along with the city decided that updating and repairs were needed across the board. Bridges were shut down and repaired. That program still continues today as part of a 30 year program. Chicago is going through the same thing. Many station are being rebuilt too.

For me it's saddening that the Redbirds & the tough old classic buses have been long retired. Neat seeing that the EL structure and the bridge over the Bronx River is an attractive green color now. Used to be caramel-brown back in the day. I'm glad the Bronx appears much cleaner now and although there is graffiti, it's not as densely concentrated as it used to be.

    Yes, the buses to Orchard are absolutely there. There were still some 6 redbirds up to 2002 if I remember correctly. Many stations along the EL part of the 6 line have been fully renovated. Stations like Castle Hill/Zerega remain the same but are rotting away, literally. The Bronx is cleaner, and has a nice new network of bike trails (Best in the city in my opinion). I ride the 6 out of Zerega from 81 to current date.

      +Mark Lee Back in the good ol days you could walk from car to car on the "classics", including the Red Birds. Transit systems prefer not to have the feature anymore due to potential lawsuits should a passenger fall as the cars rock and sway in opposite motions where they're coupled together at. Additionally, the motorman's cabs on the classic trains were quite claustrophobic. On the new trains, the cab section stretches across from wall to wall; giving the motorman a wide view as well as greater comfort. Good for the operators, not so good for railfans and videographers.

    Service operated local to Hunts Point, then Express after to E. 177th St, due to an odd issue at Middletown Road. Normally EXP starts at Third Ave.
    I was here at the rear end of the car, then went on the Parkchester bound EXP train. I can see why the R62A's isn't ready to go on the (6) line.

      Many of the major lines in New York have four tracks for Local and Express service. Others have three tracks for rush hour Express service, like the 7 Flushing line. This gives the system a lot of flexibility for running trains around work areas during late night or weekend maintenance crews, a necessity for a 24 hour system like New York's.

      The newer cars are longer in length and the distance from the platform is too great and raises potential safety hazards.

      And they didn’t feel like extending the platform so they closed it

    so basically from what i am reading and hearing, the 6 train line is going to lose over half of the R142a fleet due to these R188 conversion kits that will be available and moved to the Flushing 7 line in the coming months? and replaced with R62As? damnnnn its going to be like early 2000 on the Pelham 6

    That signal at the start, doesn't that mean proceed with caution, track set to straight ? The train diverged into the loop track though, which has me conflicted lol... unless they consider that switch a straight.

    • @PhayzinOut
      @PhayzinOut 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The train loops back onto the same track. The switch is "straight"

      Thanks. The TH-cam address added was to point to the source of the video. The latter I dont understand.
