I love how regular-people-ish Lalah is .. just like her father.. he had the same earthiness and accessibility to him. I also love how the both of them focus their vocal effort on the middle and bottom of their range.. so while everyone else is reaching up.. they reach down.. and it blows your mind with those rich bottom tones..
The first time i heard this song was may 22,1999,around 10.18 pm.I was headed to see my kids.My mom was in the hospital battling cancer,id just left the hospital and sister called. My mom had passed,i pulles over for a while turning my car off,in pure disbelief and tears. After i got my self together best i could.Crank up and this song came on.It couldnt change one thing but it gave my a comfort that i needed then.I feel it every time i hear this song.Thank you Ms. Hathaway and Mr.Sample (rip). This song will forever touch me and give me comfort.Rip mom Mrs.Vivian Booker,God has you now.
I CAN LISTEN TO THIS OVER AND OVER AGAIN AND STILL END UP WITH SAME RESULTS....TEARS IN MY EYES AND A VOID IN MY HEART....SO MANY THINGS LOST AND YET SO MANY MORE TO EXPERIENCE AND GAIN....WHEN YOUR LIFE WAS LOW AND YOU HAD NO WHERE TOO GO.....REMEMBER....REMEMBER....REMEMBER WHEN YOUR LIFE WAS LOW....SO PEACEFUL AND SO TRUE....PEACE....NEMWA
+Raymond Fryar WHAT! you got to know what I mean..I just discovered this song today...I have listened to it at least 5X, I can't stop listening to it..I guess because a part of me has lived the very words of this song...LOVE IT
She has just an easy flow. Without effort, she just sings. What a blessing. I know her dad is smiling down on her. She picked up where he left off and is doing very well.
I have loved this song forever. It used to make me feel sad, but I’ve matured and understand. How someone can step in just when you need them or vice versa, and then you move on. No accolades needed, and you certainly aren’t looking for thanks, ‘cause you did what you did because you genuinely cared. You hear the person is doing well, and that’s all that matters. Each day I can’t give God enough thanks for the times in my life I may have felt a little low. He being who he is, steps in, or he sends an angel or someone whose act of kindness is as such, and gives me just what I needed. I’m going to sing this selection at my Gospel/Jazz Event Nov 2nd. I know it will be rendered much differently this time around. ❤️🙏🏾 Keep me in prayer ya’ll!
Wow, wow, wow! Lalah Hathaway... what a voice. She's got blues and soulful vocal riffs and her angelic soothing voice. No wonder she sings with some of best musicians in the world. God Bless.
Wow what a beautiful song and so true. Never forget those who helped us along life's journey because we may have to cross that bridge again. This can also mark a true sign of love when they're with us in spite our lowest circumstances in life.
What kind of person would give this a thumbs down. R-U-FUCKIN KIDDIN ME!! Some folks should have their rights revoked from the human race. Pure beauty...
Took a while, but the secret is out! The Lalah phenomenon is unraveling and mainstream is slowly starting to take note! She is easily in my opinion the best female vocalist in the industry. Her voice is fuller than most rifters, and her riffs are expertly executed! I truly don't know if I have ever heard her be off her game!! Yet there are times I have heard her take it to another level!! My fave!
I am of the age to be blessed enough remember her father. I love the fact she is her OWN artist! while giving her father his due as well. She is so rare so beautiful, so blessed!
I love the texture of her voice and image she paints with it. This song always gets to me because of the lesson within the words. Give, love, remember, words to live and love by.
Truth!!! The words in this song are so profoundly real. This is exactly how some people are. They quickly forget and cast aside those who helped them when they couldn’t help themselves. After helping them get on their feet, they no longer know who you are. Her live singing this song is nice, but the recorded version is even better.
Listen with your eyes closed, and just subtly you can hear her father whisper through the tones in her voice. She's AWESOME! I look up to her as a singer myself, her father is like a godfather to my voice. Just AWESOME she is. AMAZING!
knockout.what a pedigree lalah has.this is real music with class musicians.i am a 74yr old bopper and it just shows class shines through every time.wonderful.many thanks.
This song came on a satellite channel as I drove home one night...now I am obsessed with it, her, Joe Sample...perfect combination. And I've lived these lyrics. My ❤
@102892536689782962931 ,she is speaking on someone who forgot who they relied on when the road was rocky...and dont forget that one day you may have to return..In other words don't burn bridges!!!
Thank you,Lalah.I never heard this song.when I first heard this song was June.28,2016,since then I've listened to it everyday in the morning, riding in my car and before I go to bed.I love this piece made in the Heart of the vessel Mr.Sampler thru the Creator. Also,Lalah allowing The Most High to use her gift...
Love Lalah. Her voice is so smooth, warm, rich and soothing. I get lost in her music just like I do with her father's music. I hear so much of him in her. This song and Lalah's interpretation is Awesome. 5:50-6:26 OMG!!! So effortless and beautiful. "Ya'll don't hear me".
Just saw her at a Chris Johnson drum clinic. She and the band agreed to perform FOR FREE in Seattle. She was so gracious and down to earth. Did an amazing, jazzy version of Summertime, Rock with You, and Billie Jean, in the same song! I am not a huge fan of Michael Jackson, but it was incredible, and all improvised. My God, she scatted, whistled (perfectly), and sang. People's jaws were on the floor when they weren't grooving and smiling.
Grew up a 60's child with her father's music blessing us. His voice is alive in Laylah. Moreso, she has clearly brought it to us but extended it with her own depth and range not lost in his.
I'm so living this song right now that it makes me cry... I just can't get why I can fix almost anything except the love I have in my life. I only wanna love her like she loved me when my life was low. I'll always love her.
Who amongst us has not lived some part of this song. Love you Lalah. I remember I hunted this song down I heard it but did not know who it was signing it. I asked a dear friend who was a Jazz expert. His name was Tucker, RIP my friend. Thanks for sharing the knowledge. I brought the CS immediately that was a long time ago, still loving it.
LADY! You've heard it before..but soooooo what! You are extremely gifted. I love your rich tones. When I was growing up in the 70's and 80's the low tones were not welcomed. You have put low tones on the map along with many neo-soul artist. I love how you transition from low to high and high to low ..proving you can do it all. Thank you for sharing your song and gift! Deshields! (one artist to another).
I was in a relationship at the time this song originally came out and the break up was somewhere along the lines of this song. This song strengthen me during that time.

she is as BEAUTIFUL as her voice...I love you Lalah...and thank you for this song...Keep singing PRETTY!!!! Musicians are off da hook, Who is the gentleman in the black hat playing guitar?
+yogi B That serious bassist is Marcus Miller, musician extraordinaire. He has worked with other famous musicians. He co-wrote "'Til My Baby Comes Home", "It's Over Now", "For You to Love", and "Power of Love" for Luther Vandross. He also wrote "Da Butt" that was in Spike Lee's School Daze. As a side note, this song was originally sung by Bette Midler.
The only thing that would make this already awesome song better would be if her late father the one and only Donnie Hathaway was on with her. She is a lovely woman and an awesome vocalist I bet her father would have been proud.
Naturally Fee Sister you are on point this is God writing his love song to his children. Thank you God. Thank you Lalah Hathaway. Thank you Marcus Miller.
I've learned to give a hand without looking for much in return. 15 years taught me that. Most things last from season to season......and I had to learn that everything, and everyone will change; that's the way of time. Be thankful for each experience, good, bad or indifferent. I can't make him love me if he don't!!! Guard your SOUL!!!

Her voice is a perfect tribute and complement to her dads. That smooth deep tone. Can you imagine them singing together?
My story, sung by the most talented, soulful singer. Thanks for expressing my feelings so beautifully. Tears fall every time I hear this.
The words are so True!! I've always loved this song and Aretha's "Someone Else's Eyes"
