Those Istanbul cymbals are the cymbal sound I’ve been hearing in my head for years but have never been able to find in real life. Absolutely amazing sounding
I'm lucky enough to have a 20" and a 21" Agop Traditional Jazz ride. They're beautiful - but my playing certainly doesn't justify them! Bought the 20" back in 2005 as a 17 year-old and will never sell it. The 21" I swapped for a very rare Paiste and it's lovely - still wonder though!
Hey Rick! What a great and amazing collection of cymbals. A great assistant too!!! Thank you very much for sharing all your wisdom, as well as your mastery as a musician and drummer.
Good Morning Blessings Rick and Jennifer! They were all good, but the one's that caught my attention are the 22" Meinl Symphonic, the 22" and 20" Paiste Traditional Light Rides, the 20" Sabian Jack DeJohnette Signature Ride, the 18"K Zildjian 1950's with Rivets, the 22" Paiste 602 Medium Ride 1970's, the 20" Bosphorus Turk Ride, the 22" Sabian Ralph Peterson Signature Ride, the 21" Istanbul Agop Jazz Ride, the 20" K Zildjian Constantinople Ride, the 21" Istanbal Agop Jazz Ride with Rivets..... man oh man, I like a lot of your fine cymbal selection Rick! Special thanks to Miss Jennifer, as she sure kept a smile on your face Rick like you've been on vacation or something! I understand as I am fortunately blest with my Sweetie of 50 years! I'll be thinking about cymbals while I'm out back doing yard work...... Thanks and Blessings Rick!
Wonderful video! I first got to meet you at a drum major performance at UNCC around 2005. Always loved your work on Chad Lawsons album. Also… I was Phil Thompson’s pastor from 2016 until they moved away. Thanks for sharing the rides.
Just McDonalds for your wife, Rick? C'monnn!!! 😂😂😂 Great video and great playing as always. The continuous playing/swapping format works great. Congratulations for both.
Your last video about jazz rides greatly helps me choosing my first jazzy ride cymbal. Therefore, I ended up with a lovely 20” K Con. Med. Thin Low (2040 g). Thank you.
Great video..what's interesting is tony and elvin and all the leading exponents of the instrument were given new cymbals to advertise or changed companies so cymbals are always impermanent in a way to the artist!
Earl Palmer used a 18" Zildjian A Crash /Ride on everything from The Flintstones to Sinatras Swinging Brass ,he reckoned it cut through the mix better than a larger ride.Ive just sold a early 90s one, that despite that tale with Earl using one, i really tried to like it ,but it was too thick/ high pitched and didnt open up easy. Zildjian redesigned that model circa 10 years, but ive not tried it.Thanks for the cymbal comparison.
It's great to do a blind test on those cymbals. My favorite maybe 20" A Zildjian (50's), but I was very surprised about the Meinl, Artisans, Rough Ride and wow, those Istanbuls sound incredible and funny enough that heavy 602 sounds great too!!!! Also interesting how different brands would go great together like some Paiste Trad's with some Sabians and Meinl. :)
Thanks for doing this Rick! I have the DeJohnette cymbal as well but with no rivets. It's fun for certain situations and is dry as hell. I understand why you put rivets in it. My ear really leans towards the old K's and-- as far as the newer cymbals go-- the bosphorus, istanbul, and Constantinople. My jazz set-up right now features the Turkish NJG (New Jazz Generation) line and I really love them. They're smooth, thin, and dark kinda like the bosphorus or turkish. Thanks again.
good presentation affirms some of my cymbal choices. Paiste trad medium and 60s 602 i also have interesting zild A 24' medium that commands alot of low vibe
that 22 inch paiste cymbal kicks ass. i am not a rich man so i have A custom zildjian cymbals around my jazz kit . i am amazed of how far the cymbal manufacturing has come in the last 40 years. there are many great companies making good cymbals. i think the istanbul is the hallmark of cymbal making, but everyones ears are different, so it is just an opinion.
I have owned sooo many cymbals, not as many as Rick, but I have many years to chase him, haha. This video is further confirmation to me that Paiste has the best sounding cymbals (to my ear). “Best” is subject to the player though. What I believe cannot be argued about Paiste’s greatness is that Ricks Paiste Cymbals and mine and the ones at Maxwells, or on stages or anywhere ALL sound good! I’ve bought a lot of cymbals and people scoff when I say “most old K’s actually sound bad”, go ahead and torch me here but it’s true! Rick probably had to go through a ton to find his gems! I have 2 - 20” Kerope’s that sound nothing alike, sure that’s charming but it makes things more difficult and that’s also part of the fun I guess. But within reason, you know what you’re getting with every Paiste. And if you want sparkling cymbal that mic’s up really well, it’s hard to beat a 602, signature or traditionals Paiste! Go ahead and attack me if you got through this :)
No one is going to attack you here. Paiste cymbals are consistent where many other brands deliver individual creations that are hit or miss. Most of the old Ks I have played ( and I have played on plenty) had some sort of issue. Basically, the least consistent cymbals ever created. When you found a good one, though, it was a work of art. These days, manufacturers have become much more consistent, so there are many good options.
Hi Roger I like and have several 24's 26's, 28's and even a 32" ride. If you look at my video "Jazz Ride cymbals" you will see some of these. I also have some large flat rides that I like. You can see a 24" Bosphorus in action here: th-cam.com/video/e6fLe20gjiU/w-d-xo.html.
Rick have you ever tried the Paiste 602 Modern Essentials 22 ride? If so, what is your opinion from a jazz perspective? I tried them in local shop here in Germany liked them a lot. Istanbul 21 SE and 22 Traditional also seem to be good options as far as modern rides are concerned. I have enjoyed watching your video as always, keep it up! Phil
I have not tried the new ones. I have many older ones of all weights and sizes which I love. The Istanbuls will vary greatly from cymbal to cymbal where the Paiste's will be pretty uniform.
Thanks Jennifer

agree nice wash sound and good subtle crash when hit with the shank of the stick smooth

Switching out the cymbals while you continuously played was a great way to compare and contrast their differences. 👍👍

Brilliant. For me it just shows how the playing utterly defines the instrument. You made them all sound great.
love the rides collection, but man, the playing was out of the world. amazing
Beautiful cymbals..all of them. Fabulous and tasteful playing. Thank you.
What fun and glad to hear cymbals played in a realistic setting with practical patterns. Great collection of beauties you assembled over the years.
One hell of a collection of cymbals, but I was also watching the kick drum the kick drum technique. The very light grip on the sticks.
I really liked the first 1940’s Great video Ric. Thank you for posting.
That Agop SE is just gorgeous!
Love this. Best way to enjoy a hot coffee on a crisp autumn day.
Amazing!🤩Best drums channel ever. Thank you for share your art Rick
This channel is the best for learning jazz. And it’s just awesome that your Mrs joined you.
JENNIFER DIOR IS A SAINT!!!! YOU SOUND BRILLIANT BROTHER RICK!!!😉👍🏻♥️🙏🏻🥁🇺🇸
Thank you both!!
20" Sabian Jack DeJohnette Signature Ride - sounds veery sexy. Absolutely amazing groove!
I love this guys playing; aside from being a very capable educator and stick making genius, he seems such a nice guy too.
Agreed!
Sounding good as always
Really nice touch to time stamp the cymbals...
Great video Rick Dior, best ride comparo ever and may I say, a fabulous solo continuum‼️There’s a lesson right there✌️🌻
This video is great on soooo many levels!

You make every cymbal sound great! Thanks Rick.
What a brilliant collection!

So much fun!!

I agree, never a better time to find great cymbals of so many types and flavors.
Cymbal 5. The 1950s A was particularly nice.

I don't like jazz, but the video is awesome.
your wife is cool!
Hi Rick
Do you like and play any 24 inch rides?
What do you like about them, what do you dislike. Do you record or gig with any 24 inch rides?
Thx

Great wife.
Has let him spend a fortune on drums and cymbals……🥰
We both spend lots of money on musical instruments....that's how we make a living.
👍Jen
Is that your wife? She makes a great drum tech, does she have a sister??? 😎
I'm using Ufib classic bright interesting color
super from 7:50 !!!
👌🏽
I have to ask, are you using massive sticks or is that just you? it almost looks as if you're using marching sticks.
God no
I am using my vic firth signature stick which has a shaft thickness of an sd9.
Killler
Nice lookin wife lucky
