I think the actors were very good in displaying the personalities of the real characters (at least as we Brazilians perceived them). From the racing fan perspective, they left a lot out Not a single mention of Donington Park 2023. It was maybe his greatest race, and one to be in the history of F1. I strongly recommend the documentary "Senna" released in 2010.

Im not an f1 fan I just watch a lot of Netflix. So when this came out I did what I always do and watched it and man oh man I had no idea what I had gotten myself into. I didn’t know anything about Ayrton Senna and when I was done it was as if I lost my best friend in the world. I was miserable. I cried like a baby. I saw his documentary afterwards, I wanted to know everything I could. As you can see I’m still doing it today by watching your video lol. I was 10 years old when the tragedy happened but didn’t learn about it till I was 40. I’ll spend the rest of my life making sure I never forget him. Ayrton Senna is a legend!

I'm Brazilian and I really wanted to know the opinion of other people out of Brazil. Thank you for publishing this review. As you said, Senna is a national hero. At that time, I was a child and our country was facing a very difficult period. Senna was a refreshment for all of us and provided us with joy and hope, where it was difficult to find. He was responsible for bringing together Brazilian families on Sundays to watch the races. So, obviously I particularly liked that they gave this tone of tribute to him and for me, it was very exciting to be able to relive that period. One of his girlfriends, Xuxa, was very famous and loved among children at the time, so her presence also gave me a very nostalgic touch.
I didn't know how audiences in other countries would react so I loved your review. I hope more people check out this series.
    Greetings from Brazil 🇧🇷😊

Thanks for sharing your thoughts from a Brazilian perspective. I really knew little about Senna as I only started watching F1 just after his passing so it was really interesting to learn more about him. I really hope it does well and given how many fans of the sport there are, it should do well!

The series captured the spirit of Senna, it was pretty good indeed! If I were to nit-pick, I’d say the following elements were missing, unfortunately:
    1. Senna was a bit more shy, introspective. That was part of his charm.
    2. Senna was very eloquent. He spoke deliberately and poetically.
    3. They could have shown more of Senna’s near superhuman techniques and awe-inspiring accuracy in every single aspect of his craft, and how he obsessively honed his skills.
    4. His struggles with the Williams’s supremacy while still producing some of the best races in a vastly inferior equipment.
    5. Donnington, the Lap of God.

She show should have been longer. They completely skipped 92 and 93. The masterpiece of donington 93… not a single world. They should have done 1-2 more episodes about the struggles of 92, about his tries to go to Williams for 93…. I grew up with senna and I had the same emotions watching the show. I went emotive in the final episode as I watched his crash on tv

The reason for that is partly because the family were ahead of the project and didn't want the series to show much of Senna's girlfriend at the time (and until his death), since they've never liked her (she was poor). Senna did however love her very much and many people close to him said it was one of the happiest periods of his life.

And yet they used a whole full episode to show Xuxa as the main and only Senna's "true love", this is the main issue of the show, as a romantic and drama perspective, Adriane could have shown more of Senna's last days, since she was with him on the last year and half of his life.

The series needed a different approach, at times it felt like it was trying to be Rush 2 by literally rushing through certain events and putting too much emphasis on his family and love life. It almost completely skipped his time at Lotus and his relationships with Gerhard Berger, I mean where is the scene when Berger threw Senna's briefcase out of a helicopter or the time when Senna saved Erik Comas life at Spa in 92, they did not even show Mansell or Schumacher!

I agree especially with his relationship with Berger and the Comas moment. they could have also done more with him and Sid Watkins. One small annoying thing was they got some of his quotes in the wrong time frames. And I also thought they played too much on him always being the victim of some wrongdoing. And quick scanned over Japan 1990. All in all I enjoyed it but, the Documentary tells his story so much better. even though I have a couple of issues with that lol.

A well put together series that did justice to Senna’s racing career and to him as a person. Yes, there were many other great Senna moments that weren’t captured but film makers have to work within airtime constraints and budgets. A part of the movie, the significance of which might be lost on many viewers, is the frequent shots of Senna’s feet on the car’s pedals, in particular his right foot rapidly stabbing the throttle. This was a tribute to Senna’s unique style. Drivers are always taught to accelerate smoothly out of a corner to maximize grip and speed, but Senna defied this technique with this constant throttle stabbing as he accelerated out of a turn. It is believed he did this to keep the turbos spooled up to increase the engine’s power. Whatever the reason, it was a unique Senna technique that contributed to his blistering speed. Martin Brundle said that Senna had a sixth sense of where the grip was before the car got there and a commentator said that Senna could dance a dance with the car like no other driver. I just wish Senna was still with us to explain it himself. 🙏🏼

Just finished the series. I definitely got emotional more than once and felt like it did a pretty good job most of the time...at least with tempered expectations being a Netflix production. But they really left a lot out and dramatized / fabricated (?) some things for the sake of a TV show, which is always going to rub hardcore fans the wrong way. I have been a Senna and racing fan for decades and watched and read countless videos and books about his life, career and death so I knew going in that I was almost certainly going to be disappointed in some ways...and I was, but overall it was a better viewing experience than I was expecting and captured the spirit of Senna and what he means to F1 and the world reasonably well.
Some notes that felt a bit off / questionable to me -
The antagonizing / nationalizing of Brundle in F3: I don't know how historically accurate that is, but would have to refer back to some books to really be positive as that is pretty early Senna history
The romance stuff - could have had a good bit less of that on screen and as a focus...but that is a pretty typical complaint for hardcore fans
The entire Laura reporter character - I get what the point was in terms of the story within the show, but such a person never existed and it felt pretty odd at times to see that "relationship"
Glossing over / outright omitting large chunks of his career (Lotus years, 92-93 seasons and their context in regards to Williams)
***I understand why this wasn't really addressed (his family was likely heavily involved in the production) but the incredibly unclear, unsettling, and potentially damning details surrounding his fatal Imola crash is a huge can of worms and still has racing fans arguing to this day 30+ years later...again, not sure how the show would have handled this in a way that would be reasonable, but worth mentioning as there were Italian court cases about his accident that went on until 2007 and statue of limitations were long since passed despite criminal charges against Williams....alas...
One thing I *loved* about this series was the clever and seamless use of historical / actual race footage within the show, mostly when various characters were watching the races. I thought it was a beautiful and thoughtful way to work in the real footage that so many of us love to see again and again, no matter how many times we've seen it previously.

I loved the show, and thoroughly admire its production values. Senna means a lot to many Latin Americans, not just Brazilians. His legacy of helping the underprivileged is - in my opinion - all the justification needed for the adulation and power his name still commands. However....I think the show kind of felt short of what it could have been. A big chunk of his "character portrait" (for want of a better term) was omitted, presumably because it would have potentially been less than flattering. Ayrton Senna was capable of immeasurable goodness, but also immeasurable ruthlessness. Obviously we did get a reenactment of Suzuka '90, but I really don't think the context for that was adequately established. I fully expected to see instances of the "either let me pass or you'll have an accident" ethos he was also famous for (especially since the Martin Brundle rivalry was touched upon). And his famous Sir Jackie Stewart interview was relegated to a couple of questions from a composite character. The story has been told before without those omissions, and it has never done anything to diminish the man and his legacy. I felt this show missed the opportunity to explore that duality of character. If that aspect of his personna was left out for fear of offending someone - well, I think it was a disservice, even to those of us who love Ayrton Senna, warts and all.

    • @PascalBreaksDown
      @PascalBreaksDown  12 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

Really appreciate your perspective on the series. As someone not familiar with Senna, I wasn't aware of what might have been missed. In Brazil, the series was accused of being “chapa branca” (high-ranking gov. officials’ cars here used to have white plates) because Senna’s family, more precisely his sister Viviane, interfered too much in the script: almost cutting all possible scenes with Adriane Galisteu (Senna’s girlfriend for the last year and a half of his life). Adriane wasn’t rich when she met Senna at a race and was only 19 years old, and was rejected by Senna’s sister and kept away from Ayrton’s coffin during his funeral. The rich and famous TV presenter Xuxa, who had a previous relationship with Senna, was much more respected by her sister, and has much more time in the series.

Therefor you can find some hints and easter eggs for F1 history enthusiasts, but also re-writing of history (for example Prost was for Senna in the team, not against, Ron Dennis was originally thinking to sign Piquet). I still have to watch the last episode, but overall, the series felt formulaic and underwhelming. The visuals were great, but everything else fell short. A lot of the plot points seemed forced, and some characters felt underdeveloped. The reporter character, in particular, seemed completely unnecessary-almost as if she was included just to feature a well-known name, but she didn't add anything to the story. The portrayal of certain characters was also off; Prost, for example, was once again depicted as an insecure villain. The casting choices for some roles were also totally wrong. There were big time jumps, and important parts of the history were completely omitted. In my opinion, the Senna documentary was far superior, and for those new to F1, I'd recommend watching that instead.

We're pretty much in agreement in terms of your analysis of the storytelling. I realised that was the style of the show early on and I was happy to go along for the ride. Admittedly, that's a rare thing for me! I still think the series is doing something right if it can emotionally and so hard at the end 🙂

I disagree I think Prost was presented as a competitive figure and most important he was against Senna’s risk taking strategies.

@@BenbricksProGamer_2008 He was portrayed as a whiny guy with a small man complex, someone who could only succeed with Baletsre's assistance. Only in the final episode, he was depicted in a more positive light.

This felt rushed and missing several seasons was bad. Other than that it was ok. Senna from years ago was much better though.

@elonmust8859 A few people have said it felt rushed to them now. It seems that's coming from people who are familiar with Senna and F1. As an outsider, I didn't have that same feeling. Will be checking out the doco soon 🙂

@PascalBreaksDown yes I got that feeling to. I watched it live on tv in 94. Terrible weekend I never want to see a weekend like that again.

From a technical standpoint, the series is amazing. The attention to detail is superb. The scenes during the races are very well executed. But, as a narrative, the series is mediocre, at best. Senna is presented as this unidimentional character. The writers dwell on details about Senna's life no one wants to see. With only 6 episodes, wasting the full first episode on Senna's girlfriend story is such a waste of running time. The main events are shown in the most superficial way possible. And as a result of the poor time management there are huge and unexcusable jumps in time. One of those time wasters is presented in the form of the fictional reporter character, which is almost unbearable to watch. She was created as a result of lazy writing. She is there only to do the most lazy and obvious exposition and to steal screen time from real and more interesting characters and events. If the writers weren't as lazy as they were. They would have written more interesting scenes of other REAL characters interacting and when really needing to do exposition, they could've used Galvão Bueno, also a reporter, also a friend of Senna, and also a real person that existed and still exists in this world. With such a legend and complex human being as its subject, the writers really, really, REALLY missed the mark here.

Thanks for your thoughts. As you would have seen in my review, we are pretty much on the same page about most of the points you raised. But I was happy to go along for the ride on this one and it's rare that I'm moved by a series so that's a winner in my books. 😀
