Pathfinder Region Deepdive: Katapesh

- Welcome back to our Deep Dive series! This week the curious country of Katapesh!
Some disclaimers:
1.) For some reason I said 10,000 years twice when I meant to say 1,000 years in reference to how long the Pactmasters have ruled Katapesh. (Their 1,000 year anniversary is coming up next year in 2025 actually).
2.) I leaned heavily into the artwork from AC: Mirage on this one, because it seemed geographically correct. Most of it works to enhance to the video, some of it feels like a stretch. My apologies if the art isn't always perfectly aligned to what I'm discussing.
3.) I also repurposed character art from the Legacy of Fire AP to portray some canonical characters from the world guidebooks for which no art exists. It seemed like a shame to let all that good art not go to use, when I could find a home for it here.
Other than that this should be a fun video. Other relevant videos you might want to watch for additional context around Katapesh are the Geb and Nex video and the Osirion video all up on the channel right now. Enjoy!

Two hours is exactly as long as my next boring Teams meeting. Gonna mute my mic, turn off my camera, and kick back with a deep dive!
Sounds much more productive!
Ah, nothing like a team's meeting that could've just been an email.
My players went crazy when they realized Katapesh is named after the local drug trade.
Yeah, welcome to Drug Country!
Gross. At least it’s full of medium-level big bads.
👍👍 I'm only a very recent subscriber here but this Regions series has become one of my favourites on all of TH-cam. Research, passion, scripting and editing are all top tier to me 😊👌
Awesome, thank you!
Your region deepdives are invaluable. Thanks for your hard work Mythkeeper
My pleasure! Some of these 'smaller' ones end up being the most fun to put together too.
There really is no better Pathfinder resource than this channel. So well put together, informative and fun.
It is going to be a sad day when we run out of regional deep dives. Another outstanding video!
It will be a sad day! But there are plenty more still ;-)
we still have a whole 4 continents to explore at some point, around with far southern garund
@@arch-warlock7409 Indeed there is still room to explore...i just know im going to miss getting new region lore eventually. I just love this series so much!
@@blakebarn8739 same but yea, it won't be gone forever
And once Golarian is done he could go to Castorvel, then Akiton, then Eox.
Basically, Sarenrae had a fun time excommunicating cleric's who decided killing people they didn't like equaled doing good in the world and redeeming the fallen.
So why didn't she redeem them instead?
@@yaelz6043 You can't redeem another person. You can only redeem yourself. Getting excommunicated by your deity ought to be a strong signal that you NEED to, in fact.
Today I discovered how amazing your videos work as workplace... I don't want to call it "background noise" because that would devalue the great amount of effort you put into them, so let's say "companion entertainment" while prepping for my meetings and taking care of emails. I appreciate your deepdives so much!
I'm loving these regional deep dives. I just finished a campaign in Garund (mainly the mana wastes) where pesh cartels were a major faction.
Awesome, they can make for some great villains (or even some unexpected allies!)
I've just started a campaign set in Katapesh a couple of months back, having fallen in love with the idea of gaming in an anarcho-capitalist desert kingdom that just happens to be run by thousand-year-old aliens. I thought I'd more-or-less uncovered all the lore that exists on the region, but this video was an absolute treasure trove of hooks for me with SO MUCH info I haven't been able to find anywhere else. Fantastic work as always, MythKeeper!
P.S.: Love the maps of the country surrounding the city in particular, as they're much higher quality than anything I've been able to find - don't suppose you would be able to share where you found them/the maps themselves somehow? Map making is not exactly my strong suit...
That map is the high-res Rob McCaleb map (as indicated in the video description). The only way to get access is to reach out to Rob directly.
@@TheMythKeeper Ah, don't know how I missed that! I'll reach out to Rob then - thanks again for doing all you do!
my players are JUST getting to Katapesh for book 5 of Age of Ashes. This is absurdely timely for me.
I love how often this happens! Great to hear it.
My players just arrived to Katapesh a week ago! Perfect timing. I may found some new inspirations for new plotpoints!
Love when that happens!
Always a big fan of your content and especially your regional content. Thanks for all the quality videos!
14:17 love me some alien visitations/invasions
Pactmasters have a cool design for sure
This is absolutely fantastic worldbuilding, and a great and passionate video to boot! Thank you.
You're very welcome!
awesome video! literally been looking for a channel like this and it's perfect.
Love your voice it's like listening to a badass audiobook
Welcome aboard!
I have been so excited for this one to come out!
Me too 😅
Surprised you could muster out this much content for Katapesh. Hope you could do a bit like this for Jalmaray and vudra
I absolutely plan to do even more content for Jalmeray and Vudra, maybe as separate videos. Jalmeray is pretty thoroughly detailed in Lost Omens: Impossible Lands and Vudra gets a whole spread in one of the 2E Adventure Paths (Edgewatch maybe?); Vudra also gets some additional detail from the Radripal deep dive found in the Distant Realms 1E sourcebook as well. So yeah, probably squeeze two separate deepdives out of that, or a Part 1: Vudra, Part 2: Jalmeray type of thing.
I’m still here and this is still my favorite series can’t wait for the next one!
Thanks, I intend to keep them coming
YES! I needed this, was wanting to do the legacy of fire AP but felt I didn't know much.
One of the few APs I have not actually run myself, but after the research to make this video, its definitely on my shortlist.
excellent video, thx for the info, i would like to know more about the temple to Lamashtu and the sphinx
Thanks for the video!
One of my favorite regions! yess. TY MythKeeper!
You're very welcome!
Love these videos ❤
great video! Thanks!
Been especially looking forward to this one since I knew relatively little about the region! So the pactmasters I guess are implied to have all kinds of strange/futuristic technology like the alum, right? Is this normal for their species then or are they somehow special?
They are some kind of Witchwyrd and its normal for them to have advanced tech. In fact it looks like for some reason they are intentionally holding back on making greater use of their tech in the country, maybe holding back some of their power in reserve for some reason? I don't know but they are not using Numeria tech that's for sure.
Enemies can only verify what is used.
Demonstrating strange tech with no rhyme nor reason keeps them guessing.
Eagerly awaiting the Tian Xia video once the world guide comes out next week
There's almost certainly going to multiple Tian Xia videos, but yes, me too!
funny thing is in my own worldbuilding project I have a nation that's a mix of Katapesh (with it's trade and slavery) and Rahadoum (with the whole not worshiping gods thing) and the architecture is a mix of arab and middle ages europa
Awesome, hope this is useful to you then.
@@TheMythKeeper thank you, can't wait for the Rahadoum video!
I'd love a deep dive on Oni and other native outsiders when you get around to it! A lot of things originally from Tian or just generally outside the Uber sea region never feel like they have a lot of material... Unless it's been covered already and I just couldn't find it!
They have not yet! For native outsiders I've done Demodands and Rakshasa so far, but not Kami or Oni yet. I'm timing the release of those a little later in case there are lore updates from Tian Xia world guide I can incorporate.
@@TheMythKeeper oh that makes sense! Very excited for that to come out then! Thanks for keeping those myths!
Goddamn, I love these videos so much :D
Thank you!
@@TheMythKeeper It's a perfect relaxation length, just finished it now. Plopped on bed, and relax for 2 hours. I don't know how you put the script together, but it has to be a lot of work to always formulate it to make so much sense, all in one go.
Very cool
Another one in the impossible lands, nice !
and here I was thinking Pathfinder doesn't have country secretly ruled by aliens...
There's one of everything in Pathfinder
This series leading up to the Tian Xia world guide. Please tell me you’ll do them when they come up. I would be interested in places like Amanandar gaining independence to become Linvarre or the region that is the result of the Fist of the Ruby Phoenix AP and maybe they have something about the aftermath of the Season of Ghosts AP
Only about a week now before I get my hands on that book and can start prepping some of that content ;-)
A country named after a drug. Welcome to Cracksville.
Haha!
It's somewhere in Ohio (it's okay I live here)
Huzzah!
The nation of barginers for anything imagined.
What a deal!
Where do your wonderful maps come from? They are a lovely mix of practically useful and inspiring.
The underlying map is from Paizo obviously, but all the overlays to highlight regions and points of interest I make myself
You were the best Pathfinder a year ago. Now you are Alexander the Great
Haha! Thank you sir!
Oh wow! Another video already?! Thats amazing! I gotta ask, for all the ones I already watched, liked and commented on, do you have a patreon or something so that I can support your work?
I have a TH-cam membership here that you can join by hitting the Join button. That'll give you 4 videos early ;-)
👏👏👏
Another wonderful video! I have one complaint about audio though. I think you recently upgraded your mic or changed some settings and now it’s overtuned to the point I can hear mouth noises too viscerally. As someone with misophonia I know it’s not your duty to fix this for me but I would be very grateful. It’s more a me problem than anything.
Thanks. Love the videos though
Hey, thanks for the feedback. Turns out audio is the most difficult part of making videos. I can never tune it quite right.
@@TheMythKeeper I have suspected that’s the case. Otherwise great work overall
Will there be a kelesh lore soon, they seem like the second most powerful next to taldor. And all I know is that they just fight people 24/7
Very soon ;-)
I want to know about genies and geniekin
Is there an elven majority land?
Kyonin is the biggest elf controlled land, but there are others too
In the far future, do you intend to release adventure paths summaries?
Yes, in fact my first episode along these lines should come out in ~5 weeks or so.
Very nice! I will not miss it
What nation will be next one?
Ah the mystery!
@@TheMythKeeper But next Garund nation will be Thuvia and Rahadoum (because we don't have anything else).
@@user-rk1gg2zp9h Hmm... I think Jalmeray may count as Garund as well... but yes, we're running out!
Would you ever have a Patron?
Some day. For now, if you want to support the channel you can use TH-cam's tip feature, or you can join the MythWatchers Club on TH-cam as well. That gives you access to 4 videos earlier than everyone else and you can join right here on TH-cam.
Hell yeah! Been hoping this would come up soon.
Hope it lives up to the hype!
@@TheMythKeeper Well it was certainly helpful for a backstory which passed through the region.
