    This is a short video tour of the old abandoned buildings of Fort Snelling's Upper Post in Minnesota. This military base was abandoned after the end of World War 2 (WWII) and has for the most part, sat vacant since then. Recent preservation activity at the upper post has stabilized most of the remaining buildings to prevent further water and weather damage. There is a good portion of the old upper post that is gated off from the public and is therefore not shown in this video, unfortunately. Hard to believe these buildings are located within a few yards of the 30R/12L runway at Minneapolis St. Paul International Airport. (MSP)

    My father trained at Fort Snelling in 1943 before being sent to the South Pacific. He became a sergeant and was offered to be an officer. He declined. All his life he never talked about the war. I remember as a small boy asking him about it one time and he gave me the worst look you could ever imagine.

      ....and 28 years later you decided to hijack a Boeing 727 airliner, Northwest Airlines flight 305. After receiving your ransom cash, you ordered the plane airborn again and parachuted out the rear air-stair over the Pacific Northwest. You were never found, but some of the marked bills have been recovered over the years. Some people say you survived the jump, others claim there is no way you survived. I am a big aviation nerd and I am fairly familiar with the DB Cooper story..... and here we are, 49 years later and you're posting a comment on one of my youtube videos. I am honored, sir! One of these days you should really tell someone exactly what happened that night after jumping off that last step with three extremely loud JT8D jet engines with a few feet of your head. Where did you land? Why was only SOME of your cash found? Where did you go that night after landing? Were you injured at all? Where have you been since 1971? The people want to know, Dan. If you want to finally tell your story, I would love to interview you and post it here on this channel. It would be awesome to have the FIRST public interview with DB Cooper since the hijacking in 1971. Maybe we should wait until after the first of the year? 2021will be the 50th anniversary of your jump, that sounds way cooler than the "49th anniversary". Lol. Either way, I will interview you whenever you're ready. You just let me know when. Thanks for posting a comment on one of my videos, Mr. Cooper.

    I got into the abandon Barracks in 1987. There was a light on in the basement , which was little startling.... After 911, they added fencing, and ramped up security patrols and cameras

      Yeah, that is a bit disturbing considering that building had been abandoned for about 40 years at that point in 1987. I figured the electricity would have been cut/disconnected long before 1987. Weird. There is definitely a bit of creepiness surrounding that place...

      Some of the buildings were still being used in the late 1980s, that's probably why there was a "light on in the basement!" My Army Reserve battalion occupied several buildings on Taylor Ave. (shown in this video) from at least 1985 to 1990. My infantry company (A Co. 3rd Battalion, 3rd Infantry) occupied the first floor and basement of the red-brick Building 53 at the north end of Taylor Ave, along with a tiny Psychological Operations detachment, while an artillery company occupied the second floor.

      Yep, still looks just like it did when I shot this video. Some of the buildings have had some preservation work done to them (some new roofs for example) but it basically looks the same today.

      Last I knew the entire area is operated by the Minneapolis Parks Department. It is open to the public. They still operate the golf course in the middle of the upper post, which is open to the public, and there are baseball fields and soccer fields near the north end of the property that are used by the public every day in the warm months. You can drive the dirt roads surrounding the old buildings all you want without getting in trouble. There are signs posted saying where you CAN'T go. And obviously, you're not allowed inside any of the old buildings. Those are currently all close to the public. There used to be a website dedicated to the old "upper post" with tons of pictures and historical information. That site had contact information for someone who could arrange private tours and entry into those old buildings if you really wanted to take it that far. Not sure of the website but you could probably find it with a simple google search. But if you want to just drive around the old upper post like I did in this video, you can do it just as easily as I did. just obey all of the signage and you'll be fine. The property is continuously patrolled by MSP Airport Police (airport property is directly next door) Minneapolis Police, Minneapolis Park Police, Hennepin County Sheriff, Metro Transit Police, (there is a light rail station on the old upper post) and I'm pretty sure the Veterans Affairs Police swing through there when they have nothing to do. (which is usually always. lol)

      That happened in Mankato though, it would have been twice as big if Lincoln had not pardoned half of them

    this place is in too good of condition to be abandoned since 1946.

    • @SlipFitGarage
      @SlipFitGarage  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It hasnt been used for anything since 1946. However, recently there have been efforts to maintain the buildings to prevent further decay, until future plans and funding. (if any)
      If you dont believe me, google "Fort Snelling Upper Post" and read for yourself. Thanks for the comment.
