I don’t think Loretta necessarily has a softer voice, nor have I ever heard her singing described as soft or gentle. Loretta was firmly rooted in the Honky Tonk era. They have similar approaches to the song. What Tammy had that Loretta did not was the tear in her voice. Loretta always sounded strong where Tammy always had that suggestion of vulnerability.
