My mother found out when she listened in to a phone call. She screamed at me and that was the last time she spoke to me for almost a year. The family was completely confused on what I had done or said to my mom to make her stop speaking to me. I told my brother and he begged me to at least be bi. When I finally told my dad, it was like watching someone cut his strings. He fell to the ground crying. (My father didn't even cry at his father's funeral.) I moved out about a week after telling him. The silence was deafening. I had already lost about half of my high school friends and was so close to killing myself, but I ended up at the local gay and lesbian center and met people that were like me. I moved away and found more friends that accepted me. But I never quite recovered from my families "acceptance", and rarely came home, other than for the annual Christmas party where my mother found some sweet girl she wanted to introduce me to.

Ryan's performances as Billy Douglas were some of the best of his long career. He showed his heart in an uncommon way for a young guy. He was willing to find and display a depth that truly belies his youth and limited experience. He was a brave soul!

. Soaps like this should be commended for handling gay issues in reaching a large daytime audience. Sadly it's NOT OVER parents classmates, jobs and faith groups are still very homophobic. You can still get attack for being LGBT+.. I was attacked last year out here in Brooklyn homophobic pizza store owner. He pretty much shattered one of my meniscus my left knee. I won't be able to get it repaired so I can look normal without a limp. But they suggest a knee replacement what a horrible thing to get ripped open to have something put in just because of somebody's hatred and arrogance and superiority this guy was a maga where all during Trump's campaign. Now like many pizza stores belong to the mob or whatever I'm afraid to shoot this guy sue his f****** feel like cutting his heart out f****** idiot he was. Now I'm limping around people looking at me like I'm a homeless person. Just turned 70 now I got to live with this on my mind for the rest of my life what's left of it

More impressive than anything in his career. I had a non speaking part in a movie of his that got canned in the early 2000's. Him and I entered together through a cafe door, and another scene I was clearing his table. We both were pressed against a door listening for our que to enter. He didn't speak to me, but he was shy and quite short. I tried not to stare, but his makeup was very thick and his shoes made him look taller than he was. He didn't have as much charisma as he did here.

Ryan never really got the credit he deserved for portraying this young gay boy,in the 90s, people were harsh to gay people. And to portray gay young man must of been really hard in those times 🤪. I think Ryan did a great job (a great young actor). 👍♥️😊✌️😎👏👏👏

Had a friend from years ago (passed on) He was disowned & kicked out. He eventually became very wealthy & had a great partner. Unfortunately, he didn't do up a trust to protect his assets or his partner. When he was dying, the former family showed up & stole everything. The partner had half the house & was forced to sell it & the family stole everything they could get. Back then there were no "rights" as there are today. Still down South this sort of garbage can happen. Always protect yourself legally.

I remember how "cutting edge" this story was for its time... they ALMOST made Joey Buchanan gay too but that was just "a bit much" back in '92. Just watching this scene again for the first time since then makes me appreciate it all over again. And KUDOS to ATWT for their current story on gay youth - it looks like they're being given the green light to go where ONE LIFE couldn't 15 years ago.

.........I was raised Southern Baptist and am half Mexican....we were always taught that being gay is something that is NOT accepted & not "normal". I made sure to always have a girlfriend...and then, at 18, I joined the military - under "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" ------- I never wanted it known. At age 25, I opted to leave the service and when I did my older brother outed me to my mother and the entire family disowned me. My mother eventually came around (5 years later) since she was dying from cancer and I let the past be the past and was there for her in the time of her death. I've always struggled with my sexuality, but I live as an openly gay man - I work in a courthouse and am no longer ashamed. Most of my struggle is spiritually, but there's always going to be SOMEONE who has a problem with it and is vocal about that....but, it's easier when you come from a place of being your true self instead of being what everyone else wants you to be or expects you to be.

This story was amazing & led to actually the biggest story on oltl Marty's gang rape by todd manning. She started all these lies that billy was being seduced by andrew. She was in love with andrew & she was spurned so she spread lies. So the gang rape was to redeem her & also was a girl who cried wolf story. Riveting stuff. Movie producer linda Gottlieb produced this & wanted to change day time. 92 to 94 was the best time ever on oltl. Many of the older actors that were on in the 80s felt left out & did not like Linda
