Angry Motorists want Road Charging. WE GOT A REPLY!

  • After I asked an Express journalist to show his working during my Pay Per Mile video, I got an actual email reply. In this video I go through the reply that I received, looking at the data the original article was based on and in true Geoff fashion I tear it a new one.
Features a lot of digging, some statistics, some infographics, a tiny bit of swearing, a rant and a tank running over a Morris Minor.
Possibly my best video ending to date

It’s always seemed strange to me that road tax and insurance isn’t averaged out and applied, per litre, at the pump. Everyone on the road is automatically taxed and insured. No need for discs. Can’t get run into by an uninsured driver. Far less coppers required. Disincentive for unnecessary driving. Also, as insurance companies are private, it seems legally dodgy to force, under penalty of law, the motorist to buy a private product. A state owned, nfp insurance company could supply 3rd party f&t at the pump, so you could still pay privately for more cover.

How can you fiddle what is yours anyway?! Just think about this, the average working person in the UK is losing AT LEAST 50% of their income in tax! Forget the headline income tax rate, we are taxed on everything! Well, apart from books! We are even double taxed on some things, like motor fuel, where there is fuel duty and vat. Even pensions, if you have a private pension and combined with your state pension your income exceeds the tax threshold, your private pension is taxed at source!! You already paid income tax to pay into that pension, which by virtue of your foresight lessons your dependence on the state, but you taxed again on that anyway! Every time you buy anything the state is taking 20% of that!! Little known fact, before WW2 there was no purchase tax, it was implemented after the end of the war as a TEMPORARY tax to help post war recovery, fair enough, sort of. Except it became permanent! Then, when we joined the Evil Union, we had to HARMONISE retail tax with their plundering method, so it became VAT. How is it VALUE ADDED, where is he value, except for the state?! Then there were 2 rates, if I recall correctly they were 5% and 17.5%, then it was 25% for a while!!!! And now of course 20%. This is an absurd level of tax to pay on retail goods and actively increases inflation!!! The reason for such a heavy tax burden is a government that is woefully inefficient and that has become addicted to easy money instead of doing the job properly and not wasting epic amounts of YOUR cash on utter nonsense like HS2 and illegal immigrant holiday camps. There are something like 70 or 80 thousand civil servants in the UK, all beavering away at thinking up new schemes to dip even more into our wallets and keep themselves employed, at our expense. And they can't even do the job they were actually employed to do. Same applies to councils, probably the biggest wasters of all. People of the UK need to wake up and smell the coffee or what Geoff has highlighted here and much more will get much worse. And remember, it's YOUR money!!!

In this regard the motorist is considered to be fair game.
Sell it to the public using loaded questions.

Big Brother watch does something similar via their website - and it makes it very easy for someone without the time to send a well written letter to the people that will need to listen to us. If an MP gets five or six of these letters they have to start to take notice.

It needs to be publicised how they produce these figures and statistics.
They hold a survey giving 3 or 4 options all of which are unpleasant to varying degrees and none of which include what people actually want.
Nowhere on the survey is anywhere to record that people reject all of the options [so are forced into choosing the lesser of the evils on the list]
They then produce a report saying we have spoken to the public and this is what they want. [omitting the fact that the questions were rigged]
It’s like asking a condemned man how he wants to die, the option of carrying on living isn’t included so the report produced says that he has agreed to die… and by this method.

Another aspect to this argument is regarding ppl like me. I'm chronically poorly after having multiple transplants. I need to visit the hospital that did the transplants on a regular basis. The hospital is 110 miles away from my home. When able, I drive to the hospital, as where I live (Lincolnshire) has practically zero public transport. The NHS transport system is a joke. Often I need to rely on family/friends to drive me to the hospital. What would road pricing do to ppl like me? Who would help by offering me a lift if it's even more expensive than it is now? Where I live a car is vital, not a luxury. I run a 58 plate Clio 1.2 that I've owned for 8 years. It's done 58k miles, and (hopefully) has plenty of miles left in it. There is no alternative, it's either a 2.5hr drive, or 1.5 days on a train (with multiple changes).
Now a lot of 'local' hospitals are shut, or just do basic stuff, because the government decided major hospital centres were a better idea. This means a lot of ppl (like me) have to travel large distances to visit the hospital if they need "specialist" services.

They are currently used as “seatbelt and phone” checkers. Later sending you a fine for using the one shouldn’t and not using the one you should. What people don’t realise, is that they’re also facial recognition cameras. Going into a national database is not something I have consented to. No one I know has consented.

There’s no reason EV can’t pay ‘fuel duty’ either. It can be applied / recovered easily enough from public pay chargers. Home chargers are largely ‘smart chargers’ and most EVs are 4/5G enabled so an EV charge rate could easily be applied to charge taken from a domestic supply. This would even work with 3 pin granny charging.

A plan i thought of after watching this and other related videos:
    1. Remove all Road based taxes, VED, Fuel etc. No need for new cameras or monitoring systems.
    2. Replace with a yearly charge per mile based on miles done on the MOT. Includes EVs to prevent the huge gains on tax relief, free relief etc.
Example being 0.03p a mile x 8000miles, meaning the tax is based on more excess driving. Some years are cheaper some are more depending on circumstances.
    3. Potential for subsequent heavy vehicle charge of an additional 0.03-0.05p.
    4. Business Vehicles such as removal vans/merchant loaders/class 1/2 HGV, use a flat tarrif of X (not sure as my knon how on that industry is limited).
Things to consider: MOT legimatcy and car mileage readings, Driving long commutes
Based on the 2023 data 41.3m different vehicles (cars, LGV, HGV, motorcycle, other) on the road are correctly registerd.
Ultimately creates a system to use pay per mile but based on people knowing that the car should be preserved and not used as a commodity.
Done correctly its expected to generate billions a year that is providing the funds without excuses to improve road quality and enjoyment?
I also believe the car fuel duty removal would encourage simpler pricing on fuel premiums, so those making long journeys can have less concern on cost of such journey.

I love your passion, a couple of months ago New Zealand we voted out labour and bought in a Conservative government. Who immediately got rid of the ute/light truck tax, stopped the $7k electric subsidy, introduced the same road user charges for evs as diesel. They stopped the speed reductions in the cities, and on highways all in their first 30 days. Your vote enables you to change things

The Resolution Foundation is a charity whose CEO gets between £130,001 - £140,000 plus expenses. It looks like they are all charities that have been consulted, which is how government gets it's way, government grants make these gravy-train riders do what they are told
