Idina Menzel really is the poster girl for 'the villain of the traditional story is now a complex character with feelings'. First the Wicked Witch of the West, then the Snow Queen, now the Evil Stepmother.
She was unfortunately one of the only parts of the movie worth watching. I knew when I saw she was the stepmother 1: we were in for a beautiful vocal performance 2: “evil stepmother” was about to become a deep and likable character

This song is sad/emotional but also very powerful to me because 1: it’s all women singing it 2: the lyrics “Bury it, marry, it, carry it” really got to me and 3: also the rage and sadness shown in the women
I totally agree with you, like when I realized the lyrics it felt so depressing because I feel like that's what women are just supposed to do, burry it - whatever we want, we're only good for marriage and we should just carry everything as if nothing is wrong, because heaven forbid we should feel anything...
The lyrics in this song are just so powerful. "This treasure you found, bury it The only way out, marry it That shadow of doubt, carry it Carry it down to your grave, oh" "The wings are ornamental They have no intention of letting you fly Don't be sentimental Some legends are born in the wrong timе"
I found her as Elsa I watched this movie and realized she was so much more and I heard her sing defying gravity haven't seen wicked but holy wow she's a freaking powerhouse!!! Along with barret Wilbert weed they're the queen of musicals!!!
Text: I don't care, this is life It's not fair, it's not right All that hope and that pride It's a waste, it's a lie Oh, you want us to breath Little girl should run free But your corset's too tight And your heels are too high This treasure you found, bury it The only way out, marry it That shadow of doubt, carry it Carry it down to your grave, oh The world doesn't need another dream girl The world doesn't need another dream girl You're too dumb, you're too young Full of heart, so naive You're so blind, you're so green You give up just like me, oh The wings are ornamental They have no intention of letting you fly Don't be sentimental Some legends are born in the wrong time Treasure you found (bury it) The only way out (marry it) That shadow of doubt (carry it) Carry it down to your grave marry it, carry it Carry it down to your grave (bury it) Your grave (marry it) your grave (carry it, oh) Bury it (doesn't need, marry it) Marry it (another dream, carry it) Carry it (girl) Oh, no (the world doesn't, bury it) No, no, no (need another dream girl, marry it, carry it) No Bury it (doesn't need, marry it) Marry it (another dream, carry it) Carry it, oh (so bury it, marry it) (Carry it, carry it) Carry it down to your grave Your grave, your grave The world doesn't need another dream girl
That was NOT light. I’m shocked you couldn’t hear the pain and intensity in every note as her character demonstrated her talent. Look at her face. Watch her play, really watch her. There is love and pain in every inch of her being because she buried her own treasure and covered up her pain for years.
@@stephanielarsen7516 I don't mean light as in happy but light as in a few octaves higher than the actual song because with this version we go from the deep, angry chords of the beginning to the higher piano moment at the end. If they had kept it all in the same tone, I think it would have been cool, rather than feeling like it just shifted to Mozart.
@@879SCSP this shift was absolutely necessary here. In the beginning, with that darker, angrier tone, she lets her emotions out. Then, playing the piano (one of the only things aristocratic women were allowed to do) she suppresses them, but the lighter tone of the music only highlights her pain.
I relate this song so much. It reminds of my friends always telling me to change and be different. I used to be too kind and try to fit in more but that's not right to do. Always be you.
Best song of the movie and Idina's voice is insane. So happy she's back now. Love the lyrics and the music video is so cool (The Remix version of Dream Girl) Idina's an incredible actress and I love Camila's voice. It's so cute, emotional and powerfull at the same time. She's a perfect actress and i just love them both so much.
I love the butterfly landing on her hand. It shows how the stepmother was once a "innocent girl with dreams of happily ever after" like all the classic princesses like Cinderella, Snow White, Aurora,... who had tiny animal companions and butterflys and birds landing on their fingers.
They're not just rocking out of course - they're like the sisters throwing laundry and the milkmaids kicking the milk down and the princess standing in front of the throne.......they're angry
I don't think she is. She plays some piano, but doesn't consider herself a pianist and definitely isn't concert level classical pianist like the Schubert piece heard here. When you hear her talking about playing the piano in interviews she says she's "not great but clunks out her chords". Granted, she's pretty decent at piano and clunking out the chords as she puts it. They probably got someone else to do the piano part for her and she just moved her arms around to look like she's aggressively playing the piano.
@@ellak6009 No problem! I'm such a fan so I remember the little things she says in interviews about herself so I'm happy my Fanzel knowledge could clear that up hahaha. And yeah she's amazing regardless of the fact she's not a concert pianist.
