Hi David I recently inherited a William Smith long case clock and the movement seems to be similar to what you show in the video. I am wondering if the movement you showed here had a half hour strike? Because I thought I remember mine to have had one at my gradparents place, however, there is none and I can not find any hint on it in the movement.
@@davidhaggarty thank you, I think mine does not either. And I have heard that there were rarely clocks from the ~1750s that did have one. I think everything is working now fine.

@@davidhaggarty I live in USA but would be glad to pay for shipping and repair. I have owned this clock for 12 years and it was something I always wanted. It keeps fairly good time but it doesn’t chime and the moon dial doesn’t rotate.

That's a good point, and thanks for watching. In my defence it was one of my first videos, and I've still got a lot to learn. There will be plenty of striking in my next video however, as I will be fixing a bell striking problem!
What an utter mess you have made of that movement. What you say is a latch it is not, that part is part of the broken spring for the rack. Cleaning any antique clock before 1915 should never be cleaned in an ultrasonic cleaner as it can and will cause stress fractures in brass.
A bit hasty in your judgement!! The pictures you see in the video where taken pre stripdown (I take them to aid reassembly). The plates were brush cleaned using IPA alcohol. I did put screw's and some wheels through the ultrasonic cleaner, although I am looking to brush clean all parts in future. The rack spring is not broken and so I believe it is a latch (you can see the groove on the pillar where it originally located). There is also another latch on the opposite pillar.
@@davidhaggarty I couldn't see the groove in the pillar so I apologize for that. It is well known that the better makers of clocks had latch fittings to there clocks, certainly the London makers What you have done in repairing that what I call a bodge has devalued that clock. I also noticed what looks like led solder on the calendar wheel.
The bell and/or support arm were not original and so the hammer (which was ok) would not hit the bell. The customers brief was that she wanted to hear the clock chime again, and so I made a plate to swing the bell round to the right position. This mod is totally reversible, so if the correct bell could be found, you would just remove the plate and fit the correct bell. I made no changes to the plate and so I don't believe that I have devalued the clock. There was solder which could have been tidied but it was a solid repair, and the customer didn't want a full restoration, so that is why I left it as is.
@@davidhaggarty I was a clock maker and restorer many years ago. I always advised customers what should be restored, in the past I have restored some very valuable clocks. I would like to correct you on one thing. You say chimes, the correct term is strike, most clocks that chime will have three key holes, this Longcase clock has just two.
Thanks old timer, some good advice and of course you are quite right about the strike, not chime. My approach to clock repairs is to make any repairs reversible, and clean but not polish movements (unless it's an open escapement). Hopefully you will find my latest repair to a moon phase clock interesting, where I am having to make a missing 72 tooth drive wheel. Of course any advice/comments are always welcome. Cheers David

This particular movement did not have the 1/2 hour strike. I loved that clock but unfortunately it wasn't mine!
