- Jól (Yule) the Old Norse mid-winter celebration. It's also the celebration of this channel's existence, or rather, when I've officially become a TH-camr 6 years ago at December 21st 2016.

Glad Jól. I think the winter solstice is still an important marker. Remember they were marked by the henges.
The Yin/Yang explanation comes closest to very ancient ideas, relating to darkness/light in the day. Midsommar/Midvinter are the extreme of light or darkness, the depth of light or darkness. This necessitates a polar relationship with relative beginning/ending of the cycle. Your note about “midvinter” is important, showing that the darker aspect of the year began earlier than the 21st of December.
Your historical analysis is quite interesting. Thank you.
The Jul season, not being 1 day alone, has always seemed to me to be the time when the water segregating Life and Death freezes over, allowing a bridge that only allows spiritual ancestors to join the living to bless us with a productive year. Many neopagans have suggested “the veil is the thinnest” between the Dead/Living during Halloween. As you mention, that time the darkness is just beginning to noticeably take over the light. This only means the “veil” is only being noticed, therefore the thickest between us and them. Midwinter, therefore, would be the “thinnest” in that the dark is most powerful over the light at that moment. Death was more prevalent in Life than any other time of the year…which suggests the “veil” of Life is thinnest on midwinter night.

In modern times, I think having a set date makes it more accessible and easier to plan. I recognize the way it was done, but celebrating for 3 days from the 21st is not a bad thing.

I feel the changing length of days so strongly that the old ways make far more sense to me than the modern seasons and calendar. Knowing that I'm just a throwback of sorts and not "wrong" helps. Happy solstice, and may your celebrations this midwinter bring you much joy and promise of renewal.

I was twirttling on my guitar towards the end a little bit playing G#/a-/Bb-/A/G#, then I thought about the solar time and linear time differences and the fact that they really evenly divided the tones to match the new Solar calendar that came into practice. Then I wondered… “OH MAN….. what if… they used 13 tones evenly divided!?!” What would THAT music sound like!?! What could you do with that!?! Maybe that’s the next step when we “run out” of music that is interesting…. Well… as long as the repetition of simplistic passages is what the masses want… smh.. idk

Fine to have some facts to this season. I also thought the gravity of Yule/Jól/Jûle was arounf the winter equinox. We don't have to be Hysterical Correct for the celebration of this feast, but it is important to know (as far as we can) what our animistic ancestors use to celebrate and when and why. Thank you yet again and have a blessed Jûle-tiid yourself!
