    Great tutorial, Michael. There are so many self-proclaimed experts on TH-cam who have no idea what depth of field is, or how to describe it. They think it just means “blurry background”!

      @@ScottymanPhoto I’m genuinely thrilled for you, mate. I hope we’re both still doing this a decade from now - whether it’s here, or somewhere else. Maybe we could even create an online workshop together someday. I plan to create my first one over the Christmas break. 👍

    The hyperfocal distance has one major challenge: measuring the distance between the subject and the camera. Some people are very good at estimating distances, but for most, this doesn't work. They would need to carry a laser rangefinder.

    • @ScottymanPhoto
      @ScottymanPhoto  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That is an excellent point! In fact, many people find in difficult to judge distance. I’ve looked for inexpensive measuring options, like apps or other devices, but I’ve not seen anything that was earth shattering. However, PhotoPills is a great app. It does have a hyperfocal distance table that has a decent measuring method with augmented reality. Great comment, and thanks for sharing your thoughts.

    Another good video one thing you didn’t mention is to do a lens test to get the sweet spot of each lens that you own. I found that this helped quite a bit. I miss the hyperfocal distance scale on my old Nikon lenses.

      Thanks for mentioning that important point! I meant to address diffraction and how finding the sweet spot on a lens improves image quality. Indeed, that’s why I have talented follower like you, my friend! To help me out in my time of need! Great comment! Thanks for sharing your thoughts!

      @@ScottymanPhoto Yeah, I finally made some headway. All it took was a few lens reviews and some car videos! There’s no getting around the need to make what people want. After all, there’s only so much demand for Thomas Heaton in the world. I look at it like this: I’m happy to make videos people want (so long as I still enjoy the topics & processes) so that eventually, I can afford to make the videos *I want*. Like most things, we have to strike a balance between what we want, what our audience wants, and what we can actually deliver. I hope you keep going because I want us to be TH-cam mates for at least the next 10 years! 👍

      @@peterfritzphoto Well said! I’ve considered the same thing. We’re at the mercy of the TH-cam market. I enjoy sharing my landscape photography experiences, but I also enjoy the technology. Indeed, I like making technical videos, but the market seems so over-saturated with reviews and comparisons.
      On the other hand, Thomas Heaton has mastered the art of storytelling. Based on some of his comments, many of his followers are not into photography as much as they are into his storytelling. I’m working on improving my storytelling, but for now, I intend to place more emphasis on my titles and thumbnails. I appreciate all your support, Peter! I enjoy our little chats about the battle of the algorithm.

      @@ScottymanPhoto Me, too. In fact, I’m starting to realise that these are what really matter: the right topic, a structured story (hook, back story, experience/conflict, payoff, outcome); an engaging title, and a strong, simple thumbnail. The quality of the filming actually matters less than all of these things. I plan to experiment more over the next few months, but my primary focus will definitely be on topics and structured storytelling. As two stubborn bastards who love our photography, and clearly don’t give up easy, I know we’ll get there!
