I have a 2017 CRV with the turbo that I bought new. I change the oil myself and never noticed it being high between changes. Honda did send me a letter several years ago extending the engine warranty to 6 years or unlimited miles. This means almost nothing to me because the I do not drive it that many miles. At the point when I have had it for 6 years, it will have under 60,000 miles on it. I change the oil much more frequently than Honda recommends. I hope it holds up.
Thats exactly the right approach. If you dont want or cant get the fix, change the oil more frequently and you will be good to go. Its just the thinning of the oil with the darn gas thats the problem. Keep us posted if you have any trouble, we would love to hear how its going.
Was told that it was NORMAL for the gasoline in the oil, I said not that much gasoline. I bought mine new in 2017 and noticed in 2022 the high level. I also bought the extended warranty, so I'm good until 2027. With that said, and I did have the information with me, the publication that HONDA itself put out, and was told by 3 different tech's. that it just wasn't a problem. They actually tried to act as if they didn't know what I was talking about! Just turned 55,000 miles on mine. Wife say's trade it for aa Honda Pilot. I wouldn't sell this car to anyone, but I would like to do something with it. I think Honda should fix them or buy them back. (Mine anyway) Don't worry, you have the extended warranty they tell me. Don't mean nothing if they are not going to fix it. They will claim NEGLECT on my part I assume.
Yeah the local dealers have a set amount of warranty claims they're allowed to cover before Honda starts asking questions, at least that's how it worked when we worked at a dealership. The service manager knew how much warranty work he could get away with without upsetting the manufacturer so he always tried to keep it under that. With that sort of system in place, the dealerships are incentivized to NOT fix your Honda to some extent, as long as it doesn't affect their JD Power survey. Sigh. Its a terrible system. And like you say, who cares about the extended warranty when we all know they're not going to cover it when it breaks on you in 2028, so that's not really helpful is it? I have 2019 oil dilution and no heat in the winter. I have had hondas since 1991. I will speak with my wallet and buy a Toyota
Extending the warranty to 6 years is nothing. What happens after 6 years....

Thats a great question. I am hoping the fix they preformed will help prevent this, but I really believe the only sure way is to monitor the oil and change it more frequently. Its definitely a pain.

My 2018 Honda civic had oil dilution problem , I used 5/30 full syn and if driving around town kept the trans in sport mode to keep engine warm , there a very efficient engine . I now have a 2022 CRV and am doing the same thing so far no oil dilution .

My 2019 CRV showed oil dilution about 45000 km. I took it to the shop and had a report that said gasoline in oil was normal for this generation of engine. That was total BS. I won't stand to have oil level rising due to gas mixed in there. I purchased out my lease and sold it within in 2 weeks. Good luck to those still hanging on to it. Took a look at the oil 4000 km after oil change. It was worse than the oil in my Sienna 10000 km after oil change. I figured that the metals were eroding really really fast inside.
I like your idea of putting the car in sport mode to help get engine warm. Did you use the higher weight oil to offset the reduced viscosity due to oil dilution and also how cold does it get where you live? I live in northern Utah, and also have the 2018 Civic with turbo and my oil level goes up a quarter inch or so and stays there until I change oil again.
@@ValConB Here in Canada Alberta it can get -32 S ,I never liked any oil that starts with 0 weight Even my 2015 mustang GT says to use 0/w20 I have only used 5/30 full syn ,and I change oil at 50% in all my vehicles , hope this helps
hmmmm? I have trouble driving in normal city traffic in sport mode. Have to constantly adjust high rpm by using the paddles. I am old so basically have driven every 3 4 5 or more speed manual transmission vehicles out there with less effort. But I will likely try bumping up from 5w -20w to 5w - 30w mobile-1 Do you think using the thicker oil will create a problem of its own?
2019 CRV EX-L... i got this issue and in talks with Honda America! Filed an official complaint and a case manager called me today. I am waiting to hear back, she said it'll be 5 days !

@@MotorsandMischief horrible! They have me date and time to follow up, no one called back! I dealt with 2 dealers, 1 said. "since i didn't buy the car from them, they won't do anything!"...
Went to another dealer, that said no recall. I said no recall doesn't mean car has no problems. Honda called back after 2 weeks, and they said take to dealer, but they can't really do anything.
I had enough and sold the car right after that response from Honda America! Because they also said they can't do anything with dealers, they are individually owned and operated... That's the biggest scam in my opinion. But i am much better off with the new car. Hopefully some others read this and stay away from Honda America.

All the warning lights coming on is because the fuel injectors are plugged up. I was getting every single warning light and when i checked what codes were coming up I got 2019e and 2019d also 1072 burning rich. Honda says they won’t cover fuel injector with the unlimited warranty and wanted 1600 for the repair. I ended up buying some fuel injectors for 300 and replaced them and fixed that all warning light issue myself.
Lots of things can cause all the lights to come on, we've got a couple other videos on the causes and how to fix. You are correct that one of the legit problems that can turn them on are fuel injector issues, and owners that have actual codes to go with the lights should be sure to diagnose them. I have a 21 and I thought it was strange how quick it warms up
Its super weird and usual for one to warm up that quick. If you didtn know why they did that, it would really make you wonder about your new vehicle.
Thats why i like the 2.3L enginethey have, i am very skeptical with small engine block with turbocharged the wear and tear will be short. The the difference on mpg between conventional 2.3 vs 1.5 turbocharged is minimal for me the 2.3L is way better on torque and reliability
We hear ya. Turbos on small engines really push them hard. In this case, with enough pressure to have gas slip past the rings.
Way to do your due diligence
There is a video on TH-cam posted last week in which an owner has a 2022 CRV. He did the oil change in November and he checked the dipstick last week and the oil level was an inch over the full line. I don’t know how many are still effected but I’m not touching a 1.5 CRV.
Holly smokes, thats a ton. I think its still a number of them, especially the 18 & 19 until they started making these fixes.
I just sold my 2019 CRV, oil dilution has a lot to do with it. That same problem also persist in 2020, 2021 and 2022. In other words, Honda's 1.5 turbo is shit. A lot of consumers are trying to either use premium gas or mix different oils to address this problem. Folks, this is Honda's problem not the unsuspecting public's. Simply stop buying them. Period.

Hi I bought 2018 Honda CR-V EX 1.5 from Honda Dealership few weeks ago. Then, all warning lights are on. It is really scary. I followed your instructions to reset things. Later, all lights were OFF. Then I learn this "Free Factory Unlimited Milage Warranty". Should I print it out and then arrange appointment with Honda Maintenance Service Center and show them this bulletin and they will fix it for me? Please kindly advise.
Hi Joshua, thats a tough question as not all CRV's need it. First, are you in a cold climate? If you live in a warmer area its much less likely. If you do live where its cold, do you take short trips where the vehicle doest really have time to warm up? You can also monitor your oil level. If its staying the same level, you are probably good. If the level keeps going up, thats a sign its getting fuel in the oil. You will need all of this to present to the dealership as part of your case, so its good to gather either way.

In late winter 2018 Honda had to halt sales of vehicles with this engine in China, because they were told that their weak attempt to recall 350,000 vehicles that had already been sold was not adequate.. Unfortunately it is a small turbocharged engine with direct injection. Hopefully the catch can you installed helps slow the buildup of carbon on the intake valves. Stay tuned!

So 2019 does not have this problem? My oil had a gas smell but the level of oil was perfect. I change mine at 3k-4k miles.
According to Honda they fixed the problem for 2019. That doesn't mean you can't have a gas in oil issue, just that Honda already installed the fix referenced in this video. Thanks for the question!
@MotorsandMischief Thanks for the response.i will definitely keep a eye on my oil. I had it changed 3k miles ago , slight smell of gas but not over full like I've seen some owners. I also been running premium fuel witch I heard it can help. Great video
In what states was this warranty extended? How do I find that information?
Never had a problem with my 1.5t. I live in a mild climate and generally never drive less than 20 miles at a time. I change my own oil and have never noticed any gasoline in the sump ever. A non issue.
I drive my 1.5t accord several times a day on 5 to 8 mile long trips on average. I also drive like a maniac most of the time. I am just wondering if my fast accelerations and hitting "passing gear" more than normal is part of the problem. Maybe that kind of driving creates higher pressure buildup or something so that the gas gets past the seals more than normal. I live down south....so not a cold climate problem.
Great questions. Once this engine is up to operating temps, the gas will dissipate as fumes and vent out of the oil. If you drive a bit harder, that certainly could heat that up faster and take care of the problem. Its also only in cold conditions and short drives that keep the oil from heating up, so aggressive driving would help with that pus your warmer climate.
Hello...I have a 2017 Honda CRV Touring...and had to have my injectors replaced...and now my cam shafts, etc! I have a copy of the Honda Service Bulletin 19-037 to take to the dealership in my area. How did you go about getting this covered? I contacted Honda Canada and they will cover a certain amount...but now this Service Manager has increased the bill and I STILL have to pay over $4000!!! How do I go about this so I don't have to pay this!! I did definately tell them it's a manufacturing problem...not the gas I use or the time I change the oil! Any help would be appreciated!
If you've documented everything and the dealer still won't cover the whole repair, then its time to call Honda Customer Care. They have options that the dealers don't and they're more incentivized to make you happy. Good luck!
Hey does the 2019 crv ex have this problem ? My oil is full but does smell a little like gas.

Dealer in NJ just replaced my plugs, no charge. 29 miles later dash lights, misfire and codes returned. Is it safe to assume that the CRV is covered by the bulletin? Also, what's the plan of attack at this point...after plugs have been replaced and dash lights up like a Christman tree along with other stuff???
So I called Honda and their "Good Will" Dept. and gave this a try. Both 1-800-honda and the Good Will Dept. told me to go scratch! Sorry guys but I have the same fuel injector problem and this did not work in any way. I used all the verbiage and information given. I was told that this update is not for fuel injectors but for spark plugs only.
are these service bulletins/recalls only for the turbo engines? I have a 2017 crv non-turbo and am having check engine lights/Christmas tree lights issue that weren't fixed with your 2 quickie videos you posted earlier
Honda says the warranty applies to 2017-18 CR-V EX, EX-L and Touring, and doesn't specify an engine type, so we would guess that yes it does apply to the non-turbo. It’s your fuel injectors they are plugged up
@@mikeniemczyk232 I've heard fuel injectors, fuse box, ground wire, faulty battery, a/c compressor, the list goes on. Honda doesn't know and anything people have tried that have worked seem to be luck and not university applicable. My Honda dealership sure doesn't know after 3 visits and a battery replacement
Is there an update with this? I’m looking into a 2017 with 40,000 miles on it but i live in MA and I’m not sure if i should risk buying one but i will be moving to GA in a year
Click the link in the description for the service bulletin, and if you're buying from a Honda dealership, have them follow the procedure on that bulletin and let you know the results. If you're not buying from a Honda dealership, tell the seller you want your mechanic to look at it, then take it to the local Honda dealership and hand them the bulletin and see if it will be covered. That way you'll know before you shell out the cash for it if you'll be covered or not. Let us know how it goes!

Hi Blake, part of this warranty was automatically added if you have the first few years of this gen. I believe in 2019 models they automatically added the fix from the factory. What year is your CRV?

is this problem only in CRV or honda accord 2022 in 1.5 engines
The technical service bulletin only applies to CR-Vs. We're not sure if there's a similar TSB for the Accords. However, in the CRVs, we understand Honda has solved the issue in the 2022s as the TSB only covers 2017 and 2018 models. Thanks for the question!

It is with 1.5 turbo. If you live where temp goes below freezing do not buy this product. Oil dilution. And no heat in winter condtions in short stop and go driving. I have 2019.
I got a 2017 honda crv exl 1.5 liter turbo, it's backfiring while accelerating. I'm thinking it's the fuel injectors. I'm concerned about the oil dilution. I heard running higher octane fuel can lessen the oil dilution. Just kind of pissed I bought this shitty car out of all the cars I possibly could have chosen. I'll never buy another honda ever again smh
So I bought a non luxury vehicle to save on having to use premium gas and now I have to use premium in it….might as well trade it in for a Benz 😑
Any forced induction engine is going to need premium, regardless of the manufacturer. As the CRV is turbo-charged, it needs the higher octane to prevent pre-detonation. If you want to get away from the premium fuel, look for a normally-aspirated, non-high performance engine
Are the 2021 and 2022 CRVs still affected by this oil dilution issue?

Honda, in our experience, is darn good about getting fixes into the production updates. They may not want to do recalls anymore than the next manufacturer but they do seem to be better than most at implementing the updates. Thanks for the comment and greetings to our Australian viewers!!

Problem existed in 2019 (owned one), 2020, 2021 & 2022. In other words Honda's 1.5 turbo is shit. Because of this experience, I will not buy a 1.5 turbo from any manufactuer in the future. It has to be at least 2.0 and preferrably naturally aspired.
The 2020 in the garage is a disaster! Electrical drain problems will leave you stranded! Not just after sitting a few days but driving 20 miles and having a dead car after an appt.! Dealer says after a tow truck ride nothing wrong but a dead battery? After a 20 mile drive? Nah. Don't buy one of these. It is horribly unreliable, not like the old ones. CVT Trans No way, Direct injection 1.5 liter engine no thanks. Trying to sell it now.
In 1994 we had a friend who had a 1987 Accord with 300,000 miles on it and he didn't know it had a timing belt. The belt finally gave up after all those miles and the car rolled to a stop with a dead engine. But the 87 engine isn't interference and he just had it towed to the local mechanic. They re-timed the camshaft and put a new belt on it and it fired right up. Those were the good ol' days for Honda. You are totally right: they don't make them like they used to. Not fixed. I have a 2019 CRV LX with same problems as everyone else. Need new fuel injectors, gas in oil.... I drive the car 40km minimum per day 6 days a week. Follow schedule for maintenance at dealer and still....
