I've been following Wyatt Cheng since 2008, and I can tell you straight up - This guy is the company's lap dog. I've seen enough interviews with him. He is very passive aggressive towards public opinions. He tiptoes around topics when having casual conversations about his games. He got better at it, but he's the same person he's always been and I fully understand why they put him in charge of this project. He has no soul.

    Imagine a world where:
-The ESRB (and other ratings boards for games) meant something.
-The ESRB required all planned monetization to be made available to them for their review and rating process, as well as made available for all traditional game reviewers who get a review code before launch. All stores must be active and all prices must be final. The cost of in-game items and progression must be identical to their planned state at launch.
-Developers are required to provide reviewers/ESRB a dev save, where they can redeem items in the store for no monetary cost to them to compare free-to-play versus pay-to-win. They essentially gain unlimited access to microtransactions on that save for free, but the day one patch renders it unusable. This way, if a game is pay-to-win, the rating or review can reflect these before consumers get scammed into pre-ordering.
-If monetization is added to the game after the official launch date, the ESRB would require them to resubmit their game for review and pay the standard (or increased) rate for doing so.
-If there is any change to pricing, monetization, progression at or after launch that makes it harder to achieve without engaging in monetization, the developer has to resubmit to the ESRB for rating and be fined for deceptive trade practices.
-Removing microtransactions, reducing costs, making progression easier for the entire player base before launch would not require a review, but can get the rating reduced. For example, if it is difficult for children to purchase without permission, the items are cosmetic only and for the most part you are know what you are getting, it could get a T for teen rating instead of M (Mature).
-Any microtransactions of any kind make a game ineligible for any rating below E10+ (Everyone 10+), and must be labelled. E10+ and T may include cosmetic MTX, M may include gameplay MTX, Adults Only may include slots and gambling.
-Labels would include cosmetic MTX (for strictly cosmetic items), gameplay MTX (Includes progression boosters, time savers, exclusive weapons, increased loot drops, etc), Slots and Gambling

    • @Killajake99
      @Killajake99 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@Frostea the only companies that answer to the ESRB are developers who need their game rated. If a company doesn't get their game rated, there are consequences, including being unable to properly print the disc cases and market to the appropriate audience.
Yes, digital releases are a thing, but trailers show that many games get rated by the board anyways so they have a rating to advertise since children cannot legally buy M+ games without parental consent.
Now, the government could essentially give the ESRB more authority in this hypothetical scenario, and create this possible shift in the industry. We know the ESRB is slow to adapt on its own, but they could have an impact if they chose to.
In Australia, Rimworld was recently denied classification by the ratings board after already being available for purchase for months and sales from steam and all sources were suspended. There are solutions like this that can be levied against developers, they simply aren't because self-regulation and legal requirements are not the same thing.
      But imagine a world.

i dont want to upgrade gear. i want to find gear. i feel like removing those legendary emblems (which give you a ridiculously low chance of getting a really good legendary gem) could be a huge step in the right direction. the battlepasses and small stashes of bullshit dont give you a huge advantage. the whole gem shit is horrible though. and i want to trade the items i find, which is a huge part of the game.
i dont want the game to be supereasy. i want somewhat of a challenge to adapt to certain monsters and bosses, not just run towards them in a straight line, spam the attack button and collect upgrade materials after 30 seconds.

The RMAH was a travesty no doubt, but it wasn't added with the intention to make the game P2W, it was added to kill the websites that were already doing what the RMAH did. Was there dollar signs in their eyes when doing it? Yes. But similar to WoW tokens they just took something that was going to exist anyways and made it safer. That is why their decision to change how loot worked entirely was the better decision later on.

I personally dont see stashtabs in poe or poe in general as p2w. why?
    1. Do you need them?
    - you have the option to do everything in the game without those stashtabs. (even sell items etc.)
    2. How much?
    - they are effordable. If you buy all the stashtabs that have high qol value, you spend less 40 bucks which is less than buying a normal full price game. (currency, map, quadtab etc.)
I personally dont think that a game, that requieres you to pay 60 bucks max to unlock its full potential, can ever be pay to win.
    3. diminishing return:
    - spending more and more money doesnt get you anything. diminishing returns decrease.
    additionally:
I dont think p2w has anything to do with pvp or competing. e.g. a single player farming simulator can be p2w.

9 months of playing Diablo Immortal report: At paragon level 950 as a Barbarian I am super strong and have a badass, powerful custom build. I have spent $0.00 on this game. I can kill an Elder Rift boss in 18-20 seconds. Comparing myself to other players who after questioning and interviews have spent between $500 to $1,000 in the game on microtransaction gems they take between 10-8 seconds to kill the same boss.
Where microtransaction gems really matter are in infernal raids (paragon 800-1,300) in which a group of 8 whale players can kill a boss with 100,000,000 health in a matter of seconds. However, saying "really matter" is up for debate because when the boss dies in this scenario there's 8 minutes & 30 seconds out of 9 minutes remaining on the raid boss timer. A group of none microtransaction free to play players would probably spend 4 to 6 minutes to defeat the boss as long as it went smoothly and everyone knew the fight.
The conclusion is that Diablo Immortal's microtransaction gems aren't necessary to fully play and enjoy the endgame and earlier sections of the game where they start pushing the microtransactions on you. All they do is save you time and make the levels faster and the enemies die quicker.
I play this game on my tablet when I'm taking a ****** or watching a meh movie with my family. If you're playing on PC there's so many better ftp and ptp games in this genre. I play Path of Exile and will switch to Path of Exile 2 later this year. Path of Exile mobile is also still in development so that'll be a competitor to D8ablo Immortal when it comes out.
There's supposed to be a new class coming out in June or July 2024, so I'd like either a witch doctor, Shaman/druid or some kind of dash/teleporting assassin with knives. Maybe a badass juggernaut class with a huge warhammer that hits slow but super hard. Most insiders are saying it's gonna be a Tempest which would be an elementalest with a sword or something.

PTW destroys any game, as it automatically comes with artificial progress gating and plays on all these psychological effects. You won't find a single PTW game that does not employ them and the fact he's ok with it, shows how far even gamers themselves have been boiled like frogs to accept this.

If we are to allow publishers to create gambling based pay to win systems in games, then they should be subject to relevant gambling laws and licenses in each country. If a casino was to produce a website that did what Diablo Immortal does, with no protection for problem gamblers and incentivised the player to spend more regardless of how much they already spent, ignoring any limits, any KYC checks, any money laundering and so on, they would be fined hundreds of thousands, into the millions and potentially disallowed from running a gambling license. Just to be perfectly clear... P2W is when you in any way shape or form can:
    1. Directly or indirectly exchange real money into in-game currency (generally just about anything you can sell in auction or via direct trades).
    2. Directly or indirectly can spend real money to prevent death or losses (like potions, resurrection scrolls, etc).
    3. Directly or indirectly buy boosts and discounts for real money (like EXP boosts).
    4. Unlock parts of the game or reduce cooldowns, queues, or increase dungeon entry's per day (like premium memberships).
    5. Directly selling items like armor, weapons, and/or titles that gives stats or increases animation speeds.
What they all have in common is that real money changes the experience. Maybe you thought if you just buy an EXP boost it won't affect anyone else other than yourself... But what happens if 50% of the playerbase does the same, you have 50% of the players reaching higher levels faster, and that changes things. It changes what loot and probably how much loot is being sold on the market, it increases demand for some items and floods the market with others and that changes item value, making it harder for lower levels to earn a buck. You also reduce the chances for players looking for party-matching as you've boosted your way out of that bubble, indirectly making slower progression for the rest of the players.
In WoW or FFXIV I'm sure things like this doesn't matter that much because they have millions of players, so nobody would actually notice the effects, but most games don't have millions of players, most MMORPG's average around 10-100k players a day.
Loot Boxes on their own is not P2W unless they give items containing any of the P2W elements above, it's just a gambling mechanism but being against them is 100% valid. Just don't whine about how bad Loot Boxes are and then go buy Loot Boxes yourself.
If you're against all of these things, just don't play these games, it's as simple as that... There are a million other games to play, why would you force yourself to play a game that goes against your own standards? Because it's new, because that's what everyone else does? Games are supposed to be enjoyable, so go play the games you enjoy rather than the ones you suffer through or makes you upset. Maybe one day enough players does the same and the industry has to rethink their options before upsetting their customers.
