    The leather strip of the edge part is essential to prevent the cutting edge from cutting the thread. If you only put the spine on the blade you run the risk of accidentally cutting the thread.
    The thickness of the leather strip should be the same thickness as the knife blade.

  • @DaemonsBane

    A fine sheath, no doubt about that.. But for a "DIY" video, you should consider dropping the music and instead explain what it is that you do.. Also, skipping steps in a DIY video, is not a good thing

    Nice job but you put the welt on the wrong side. You want it on the knife edge side so the blade won’t cut the stitching

      colton housley : only on one side if it’s a fold over sheath. But you are correct on both sides if it a flat style sheath.

      I have never used a drill press on leather,just a rotary manual punch. I have a drill press and I am working on a sheath now, I think I will try it. It sure looks a lot easier and faster then by hand.

    Really beautiful decorative sheath! Precise and with lot of attention to details, really like it. On the other hand, the main purpose of a knife sheath is to hold the knife and most importantly hold it safe! Sooner or later (if you intend to use it) you will cut right trough the sheath with your knife while pulling the knife out, or sheathing it in. If you are "lucky" enough, you will hold the sheath and cut right in to your fingers...

    • @AmrinderRandhawa
      @AmrinderRandhawa 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      that is just a black die that is applied to the edge of the leather there to accentuate the look. It can be burnished to achieve a high gloss finish on the edge which also gives it a certain degree of protection against moisture.

    I wish he had explained what (light, medium, heavy) grade leather used as per Amazon's project leather being sold. I need to buy some leather but cannot feel the thickness/stiffness of the leather they sell and they don't say the thickness.

    • @MountainFisher
      @MountainFisher 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Mr. Weaver; Leather is measured in ounces, one square foot of leather 1/64th of an inch thick (.016 or .4 mm) weighs one ounce. Heavy duty leather is 8 ounces or an 1/8th in. Since he's building a knife sheath he wants 8 oz leather and that is what he is using.

    • @terryglenweaver
      @terryglenweaver 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MountainFisher Thanks. My biggest gripe is the poorly given descriptions across a wide variety of consumer products.
      In this case leather. I was seeking certain leather to work with and one claimed it in ounces, yet another in mm and another inches, several gave medium and heavy, (funny no one used light or thin and another gave no thickness reference at all.

    • @MountainFisher

      @@terryglenweaver I suggest you watch the Weaver Elements video series starting here and he does a short explanation of the two main leather types. It's a basic introduction.
      th-cam.com/video/6w485PtivLE/w-d-xo.html
      Now here is a more in depth tutorial by Springfield Leather in two parts on how to choose veg tan leather, it's almost an hour for the both of them.
      th-cam.com/video/rOpqWydgr-s/w-d-xo.html
      Oh Mr Weaver Springfield Leather will sell you high quality leather by the square foot so you don't have to buy a $245 Herman Oak side. Beware of cheap leather, it isn't worth it when you go to working it. I learned this from experience.

    • @MountainFisher

      @@terryglenweaver I totally understand your frustration. If you live near a Tandy Leather store they have classes for beginners. It's where I first learned how to make a sheath for my knives in 1992. I am fortunate that I have a Tandy store over in El Paso and so I can hand pick my leather, I have a military discount so I'm in Tandy's Elite club, the savings is significant, but it's the one thing I don't like about their store.
      A note on hardware like rivets, snaps or buckles is if it doesn't say "solid brass" assume it's plated steel. Had a rusty filet knife sheath come back to me once and my customer wasn't happy and though Tandy carried solid brass rivets they did not carry solid brass snap fasteners and I had to make a whole new sheath with button post flaps to secure the knife. I now have line 20 and line 24 solid brass snaps from Zack White leather. Weaver Leather carries them, but I have to buy 100 of them, I don't make that many knives!
