It would be good on day's like today with such light winds to have the wind speed at the top and bottom marks displayed on the screen so we know what the wind is doing.
This is the first race of this years cup, that reminds me of the previous one. The boats have become so much better at dealing with low wind and they get on the foils much more quickly. But as this race showed, there still is a limit.
The old j class AC boats were legendary for not having any passing after the first few minutes. There was always one boat that was massively faster than the other, and the triangular courses made at least one of the legs a boring downwind drag race with little to no maneuvering needed. If a tacking duel happened, it was usually right at the start, and it was exciting for 3-5 minutes until the pass happened. There were of course exceptions, but 95% of the races went like that.
It was fabulous today to see the winning boat sailing as a displacement boat........I think the sailing gods is trying to tell someone something here...
You know when you have the design rules wrong is when the most exciting part of the race is when the boats can't sail, on top of that the winning boat had to cross the finish line sailing as a displacement boat....lol This is a total disgrase to Americas Cup sailing. This is idiots telling idiots how to design a boat that cannot sail in light air.
Thank the Kiwis for agreeing to move to Barcelona in this period of the year, where the weather conditions are as shitty as those of the Hauraki Gulf...
What?! The wind dropped to around 4-5 knots! Classic displacement boats would've been crawling at ~3 knots. In hindsight, the race shouldn't have started but wind isn't always the most predictable thing... What boats should they be racing that would go well in 5 knots of wind?
So many boats come of the foils before the start. Would be nice if there was a rule that allowed more time added to the start if that happens to make for a better race.
Commentators said it several times. The boats were actually doing 5-10 knots in displacement mode in only 4-5 knots of wind! It just looks slow because of what we've come to expect.
Normal sail racing - once you've started, if the wind changes, that's just something the competitors have to adjust to. That's why most sail races aren't televised live!
Race committee has largely favoured the americans. By shortening the legs and then cutting 2 legs (!!!) the regatta they cut every possibility of Alighy to come back. This was not fare on my opinion.
it's not the first time they reduce legs... they systematically seem to act to make the race perfectly match the TV schedule. Is it in the rules how they may act on shortening (for example, that they have to short if race would otherwise go overtime), or is it discretionary?
You are 100% wrong. The race committe has a written protocol to follow. If the wind is within x-x speed the course must be a certain distance. As soon as the wind falls in this window the decision has been made. No human os deciding this based on their opinions or feelings. The marks are moved left or right based on the direction of the wind over a period of time. The course can not be angled more than a certain amount compared to the wind. You just don't know what you're talking about, that's all.
This has to be the worst 'race' so far. Complete lottery and a waste of time watching. If this is the pinnacle of sailing then sailing as a sport is in trouble.
Displacement boats would have been doing nothing today. There was 5-10 knots of wind. Even in displacement mode these boats are sailing at or above wind speed. But yeah it's a bit annoying how much of a lottery it becomes, or where the 'skill' is about staying on the foils and not about sailing. I wish that they had a rule for low wind days to just pull the foils and just sail in displacement mode.

100%! It's very rare they actually tell us the current wind speed.

Why can’t we have vmg displayed more?
and current wind speed for each boat?! Severely lacking telemetry...
Who is this commentator who shouts about almost everything, but seldom seems to have almost no insight on the sailing? Proper tedious!
Staying clear of dirty air at the start in light winds is crucial
So often with these boats it’s won in the first 30 seconds. There are exceptions but the leader at the start is still there at the end.
Welcome to America’s cup racing… it’s always been like that with all the designs
Not with Team NZ vs Italy yesterday, a superb pass.
@@davefellows. You need a special boat to be able to pass in the way TNZ did. Outstanding achievement. Let’s hope TNZ race in R3.

what is the penalty for breaching course boundary - the commentary team missed this !!
Normally drop 75m but it was wiped out, presumably because of their massive deficit to USA.

not a fan of these spaceships either...bring back lines and sails and moving across the boat rather than cycling
Ridiculous angles
I totally agree with you!
Absolutely! - nice to see a heeling boat, the crew fighting it a bit. These boats go fast, but are less of a sailing spectacle.
And i miss the huge kites
Open the spinnaker!! 😂😂😂
Fascinating race
Team NZ will surely be looking seriously closely @ .Crane maintenance & operation for sure. Surely a miracle the boat could survive 🙂🙂
today comments can complain about foiling boats not foiling instead of boats foiling, for a change :)
show the wind map!!!!!!!!

HUndred percent dude. It has happened way too much since the comp started. It makes for a boring race when the race is won before it starts.

Anything with a sail.......
@@letsgo2510 they have that. You need wind for wind powered boats 🙂
that wind blows
So many boats come of the foils before the start. Would be nice if there was a rule that allowed more time added to the start if that happens to make for a better race.
What is the wind speed and direction VMG, where’s the tech? This is sailing How about a screen read out. Other wise makes this boring.
Commentators said it several times. The boats were actually doing 5-10 knots in displacement mode in only 4-5 knots of wind! It just looks slow because of what we've come to expect.
Yes, the lack of telemetry is really poor. Wind speed and VMG for each boat would make for much more interesting viewing.
Who called this race on? Come on this is a joke.
Normal sail racing - once you've started, if the wind changes, that's just something the competitors have to adjust to. That's why most sail races aren't televised live!
Ridiculous
why do the commentators talk low wind races down like that? that was a great race! it's like you are embarrased to show boats off the foils.
🎉
bring back keel boats please

@@DialedN_07 what you said. If Alinghi was in front, the exact same decisions would've been made.
I don't think you understand how these course adjustment decisions are made.

ditchwater.. next..
even when they go down wind they are still sailing upwind, what a joke.
Edge of my seat 🤪
I love these marginal foiling races.
This is just dumb.
Terribile!!!
This has to be the worst 'race' so far. Complete lottery and a waste of time watching. If this is the pinnacle of sailing then sailing as a sport is in trouble.
This is just sad for the sport. Call it a draw or cancel the race. Key word. Race.
the race is bad very bad poor racing
This is pathetic it's like one boat finishes the race over 50% of the time boring waste of money
Alinghi is a joke😂
😴😴😴😴
This is soooooo boring......Back to the good ol' displacement boats plzzzz. I'm done with this.

That would've been even more boring, trust me.
