Man, oh man! Your 944 videos are like having a great neighborhood friend....willing to teach me how to maintain mine. I know that your videos / interests lay with getting younger enthusiasts involved in their cars, but I’m 65.....used to work on all my old previous cars. Life, careers, family, other hobbies....got in the way. Your videos go a helluva long way in eliminating the “Porsche mystique” and now encouraging me to once again turning my own wrench! My 1990 cab is currently in winter storage, but I am psyched to bring her out in another month or so! Thanks again, Casey!

I miss my 924... loved that car. Best order for bleeding brake fluid is to start with the wheel the farthest away from the master cylinder, and finish on the one closest...

"Hygroscopic" is the correct term :) Absorbes moisture :) The adjustment of the wheelbearings on the 944 has the same type of bolt clamp nut as the good ol Merceds" :) Anyways..loving this project.Im a huge fan of the 944,and i really see one in my garage at some point.Fortunatly before all the flippers and auction houses inflates the prices.Haappppyy new year by the way :) Greetings from Norway ,Stefan

Nice vid, I think because you are able to talk for the whole duration of the video you don't need music. You only need it if you make a time lapse or some sort of section where you aren't speaking. My opinion, but nicely made video nonetheless! Can't wait for the road test!

Looking forward to those porsche DIY's. There's a great sense of satisfaction that comes from working on your own car. And it's more than just saving money (although that's a bonus). It's that you get to know and appreciate the engineering and know that you did it right.

You were right there in it. You should have pulled the bearing nut off, cleaned out as much of the old dried up grease as possible, then stuff it with fresh grease. As you adjust the nut back on, keep turning the hub to squeeze the excess grease out...simple preventative maintenance.

Really enjoying your channel. The moisture will be because of blocked drain tubes. Use the plastic filament from a "weed wacker" to unblock it. Also check rear cubby areas for water too. My turbo is sunroof delete so don't have that issue but the drains in cubby needed clearing.

  • @kontakt4321

Just a tip... if you teflon tape (pipe thread tape) the threads on your bleeders it will help you seal the vacuum system as you bleed. This way with a clear hose you can tell if you are still getting air bubbles, whereas without it you will always get air bubbles even if the system has no air in it. It'll also keep your bleeders from getting frozen and snapping off when you try to remove them.

Hi Casey, I actually liked the music.
Regarding the Pressure spike noise, that happens because the air rushes over the surface of the window and literally plays the car like a flute. For best remedies, just crack open a rear window 1cm or so whenever you open your wondow. Apparently in older cars this was never an issue because the doors never bloody fit and had huge gaps where the air could escape....
Finally, regarding cross threading: Am I the only person who spins their bolts backwards until they click into place, then starts tightening them? No one ever seems to mention doing that...

I've got a 89 944 2.7 (w/ ABS) going for 16" wheels, I'm up to my third set as of last night. Bought some 16" phone dials needing a repaint and some scuff repair - ontop of my non M030 D90's and original 15" phone dials. Going for Dunlop Direzzas as an all around daily/rain/autocross/track tire.

Cool videos. Thank you. I have a 944 1986, timing and balance shaft belt replaced, but, yes, needed cylinder head job too and valves. Sounds great now, but there's a fuel leak, mechanic's kid says it's fuel pump and line. I replaced the small line after the fuel filter four months ago. I also bought the speed and reference sensor, but haven't done it yet. Light aren't working, not even with twisting the knob, this makes them move only about an inch.

Nice video Casey. I am really thinking about filling the right side of my garage with a nice example of a clean 944. Just the basic car like yours. My HOA does not allow any major mechanical activities in the garage, so I'll be looking for one that is in a little nicer condition. I had a 1984 944 in 1985 and I loved that car. I also owned a 1972 Super Beatle in the late 1970's. I was always amazed at the VW influence, and as you showed; the Beatle was an engineering master piece for the 1930's. To me, Porsche has always been the "smartest" builders in the business. The 911 is the proof in the pudding. Keep these great vids coming please. Oh... One more thing. Learn from my expensive mistake. Never leave the 944 rear hatch unattended. If it falls due to some unforeseen circumstance, you will pay dearly for replacement glass. In 1985 it was $700.00 installed for OEM glass. A quick google search showed that they are available in aftermarket now, but still upwards of $500.00!

Love the 944 vids Casey. Btw you were only partially correct. On both of my my cars it doesn't say 944 on the left side. Just Turbo in Porsche script in black on the red one and in off-white on the black one on the right side below the hatch. Can't wait to see a timing belt change video when you do it and what would be a good way to mimic the timing tool to hold the notches aligned on both the cam and crankshaft while installing and tensioning the belt.

For decades I've SPARINGLY used just a dab of NeverSeize on wheel studs, and with twice annual wheel swaps, never had a problem with rust or threads. I know, most pros disagree, but decades of experience say it works damn fine--if used SPARINGLY. On bleeder valves and even spark plugs. (Where it will short out the plug if you just gob it on.)

Watching with interest. Have a 90 944S2 Cab that I’ve had for 13 years and done very little mileage or maintenance on so time to catch up. Just changed the trans/diff oil which you may want to think about as it could be original oil in there. My oil coming out after 29 years and 60K miles looked good though. Up next brake flush...

Should have wheel weights on the inside of the rim on such a nice wheel. Another place that collects water is under the storage flaps in the trunk, those hoses can sometimes get dislodged and you will be carrying around a fish tank. Also underneath the spare has grommets that deteriorate over time- eventually falling out and letting all sorts of stuff hang out in there

I learned all that similar stuff way back when on my first car except my car of choice was the 84 mazda rx-7 gsl se. It was considered to be the Japanese competition to the 944 ofc much cheaper to get into as well. Later i graduated up to to the 87 rx-7 turbo and man that really uped the driving excitement level. It's amazing what cars can teach you that you can actually apply to life.

On a car that old I'd replace everything in the brake system just for peace of mind. Even on my cheap 924S I sent the calipers out to get rebuilt, rotors, new brake lines at each corner, and a new master cylinder and brake booster. The booster was only $200.00, which I thought was a bargain compared to most cars.

I recently got one of my trademark stupid ideas, that would actually do if hade the cash for it.
    Volvo 5-cylinder turbo swapping a Porsche 924?
This stupid idea probably goes along with my other 2 stupid engine swapping ideas.
(In case you are wondering, my other stupid idea is to T4 swap a 480 and my other slightly less stupid idea is to T5 swap a 240 or 740 or 940).
Here are the two things you did wrong, you should have worn gloves when using that power tool (preferably with a leather like material) this as you could get your hand caught and possibly brake your wrist, secondly when using power tool make sure to use sockets that are made to be used with power tool (generally at least here in Sweden most of those “power tool sockets” tend to have a mat black finish).
You are absolutely right about the fact that you should change your brake fluid regularly, this as the fluid is indeed hydroscopic, and absorbs water which if not changed regularly can lead to coronation in the brake system. Note that DOT5 is not hydroscopic (unlike DOT4 or DOT3) this as the DOT5 type is silicon based.

Another great vid on the 944. So I ha e a pretty weird assortment of cats that I have had for a long period of time. Amongst those are two 944’s and two VW Things. They rear suspension on an early 944 and thing is almost identical and share the same cv joints. For how radically different in purpose they are it is crazy how they are cross engineered. The early 944’s also share front suspension with a VW Rabbit. So rear suspension from an air cooled VW, rabbit front suspension and it was considered the best handling car in the world at the time. That’s what great engineering is all about. The purist snobs make fun of these but honestly looking back at early Porsche’s and adaptation of VW running gear, this car in a lot of ways is very true to the original recipe. I am a self confessed old VW and Porsche fan boy through and through, and love these old cars because of, despite of, all of that. 😆

Those wheel spindle nuts.... They are evidence of the design heritage of the Porsche 924 which developed into the 944 and then 968...
The 924 was designed by Porsche using as many VW parts as possible,to be a VW sports car. At the last minute, VW decided to can the car. Production was due to start in Porsche's Neckarsulm factory - so they decided to adopt it as a Porsche and called it the 924.
Back to those wheel nuts - the car used the late Beetle semi-trailing arm rear suspension, and VW-sourced McPherson strut front, and Passat gearbox (modified), and an LT engine. Beetle suspension, so Beetle axle nuts used.
Yes, I know the 944 got heavier-duty components, including a 4 cylinder engine derived from the 928.. Just like the 356, it went through a process of replacing VW bits with special Porsche ones, but still kept lots of hidden ones

If you think an air cooled beetle's suspension is brilliant you should see a 1955 Citroen DS suspension....... :-D

Odd choice for tires. I know that 15 inch tires are few and far between these days, but there are higher performance options, even accounting for all-season duties.

It would be hard to find the plastic components in a targa roof if it wasn’t a Porsche. Good thing it is.
