I have never seen floss used before, she does a lot of unique adjustments. She also explained everything she does very clearly. She is also one of the few dancers I have seen leave the shank lone.
I usually use floss for my elastic because if I use string it will usually rip or tear when I put my shoes on if I did not put the elastic at the perfect spot or the perfect length. Even tho I am used to this and know what I need I still make little mistakes when measuring. On my first pair of pointe shoes, I cut the elastics too short so the shoe would be really tight on my heel and I had to pull my elastics to put the shoe on. The string ended up snapping after a few days so I needed to replace it.
This brought back so many memories. However, “back in my day” there wasn’t any jet glue. The ugly misshapen feet I wedge into some shoes are a constant reminder of both the pleasure & pain felt with pointe.

@@galli0 idk why you feel the need to correct her analogy 🙄 gloves you use when operating. You change them when they're not sterile anymore (and therefore like dead shoes)
@@saskiadenboer3239 because its possible to operate without gloves/without sterile gloves, its not possible to without the equipment, are you just going to rip through the flesh? People need to watch how pointe shoes are made to understand why their lifespan is so variable. Most shoes are made with common durable materials: rubber, cotton, canvas, etc.. Pointe shoes may seem durable when you feel how strong the box is fresh out of the bag, but that's like saying a stack of papers is strong enough to stop a bullet (spoilers it's not). The box is basically paper mache and add in sweat and body weight, only then will you understand why the amount of time spent dancing and the type of dancing play such an important part in the shoes breaking down. Plus because every shoe is handmade and it's more of an art than a typical assembly line the price reflects that. Finding the right pointe shoes isn't as easy as grabbing the right size. Since they are handmade each maker has a particular feel, similar to handwriting the end result is the same but they way it is done is unique. Do they start shaping with their right or left hand, are they new or old in the business, who taught them? All of these are factors in the fit and feel of the shoe.
also, the area of the world affects how long the shoes last! the more humid your environment, the quicker they will break down because along with the sweat as you said, there is also the water in the air.
I always love that ballerinas get shoes designed to fit their feet perfectly and we're still like 'got to squish em, bang em, cut em, snap em' before we will even put our feet in them. Really shows the perfection in the art form
It’s so hard to tell ppl why if theyre not dancers. When u first wear it... it is so hard and you cant dance in it. So u have to break it in kinda like high heels

Well if the shank (part that supports) gets any harder, you cant push over the shoe, so basically it looks really ugly. But keep in mind that pointe shoes are constructed almost completely of paper mache and satin, so in an 8 hour day, while sweating. Your shoe breaks down like crazy
marie I would only do the same if they were the perfect shoe. If they were dead or really crappy but “lasted” for years, I would definitely keep my kidney.
I am not near an advanced level. I use my pointe shoes for about 6 hours a week and they are normally bad after two months. As I don't have all the money to buy six pairs of pointe shoes a year I keep wearing bad ones with adjustments. We are always trying to make them last and professional dancers really need that. That's why some companies give the dancers pointe shoes. As it is very expensive, companies are constantly asking for donations so they can do that. The ballet world is very restricted because of the amount of money that it takes, but is such a beautiful art form. There should be more projects to encourage young dancers, and I'm glad that nowadays people value it more
At 6 hours a week, you should be replacing them every 2-3 weeks. It's a safety issue. At the least, buy 4 pairs and alternate them after half an hour or so of wearing. That will get more wear out of each pair, though a pair still isn't going to be supportive for 50 hours. Any professional company will provide their dancers with a shoe stipend.
@@Author.Noelle.Alexandria it really depends on the dancer. I used to do about 30 hours a week, and about half of that en pointe a week. I'd buy two pairs of shoes to alternate, and get about 4 months out of them, even after I took almost half the shank out. I'd glue the wings once a week or so, but as long as they got dry between uses I could get a lot of wear out of them.

Jola W.C; I started dancing pointe when I was 11...and one of the main reasons my teachers allowed me to move up so fast was cuz my big toe and the next two toes are all almost the same length...I have a natural advantage for supporting myself on pointe versus people who just use their big toes

I need to get back into ballet, I unfortunately had to quit before I got my first pair of pointe shoes but I desperately want a pair. It’s so amazing to see the different ways dancers customize their pointe shoes 😊
Hi! I’m an Irish dancer most people don’t know what that is but if you know what Riverdance is then you are on the right track. Anyway we have two pairs of shoes, the first shoe is a soft shoes which is like a ballet shoe and the second pair of shoes is hard shoes which is like a tap shoe. With hard shoes you can go up on point just like pointe shoes and we actually have to dance on point on one foot. There are actually shoes that allow you to go on point!
For everyone who shocked at the fact that she goes through a pair every three days, that’s actually a very long time being a professional most professionals go through about 10 pairs a week so for everybody like oh my God only three days chill it’s completely normal. No hate to anybody just correcting people and making things clear I’m a dancer on point so I know how it is.
ballet is so beautiful!! I wanted to become a ballerina when I was little but my family couldn’t afford it. i watched all sorts of ballet movies and videos growing up! now i’m turning 20 and considering starting ballet. clearly not to become a prima ballerina or even dance professionally but just as a hobby. it’s really incredible and emotional.
I've got relatively flat feet, but they are strong. I like a bendy shank but a super hard box, and luckily my shoes lasted forever. Unfortunately I didn't get tall enough. I did 17 years of training though.
You don’t have to have arched feet to be a ballerina. I have flat feet but have stretched the top of my ancle so it appears like i have a nice arch when I just have nice and stretchy ancles.

To the people who may be confused: not everyone’s pointe shoes last three days. Some people need a new pair every week , and some can last a few months. It all depends on the way your foot is in the shoe/ how strong and flexible they are. Also shoes come in different shank hardnesses (is that a word lol) so that also has a lot to do with how long it lasts. Hope that helped clear any confusion people might have.
tbh the materials for the shoes probably arent worth that much, the price is mostly because each shoe is handmade and require a lot of specific labor that isn't easy to learn
Each maker also makes their shoes a little differently which is super important for each dancer (ex: thinner box, longer shank, etc). As far as cost, if you are a professional with a company, often times the company buys the shoes for you, but yes the cost is quite a lot
Ugh the shoes are so beautiful. I bet people can make much more long lasting ,better ballet shoes now. But dont want to because they wanna keep it traditional ??? Its so expensive tbh
It sounds like preparing shoes is practically a full time job in itself. I don't know why technology hasn't invented a better, more cost effective, as said, shoe. $100 per pair that may last for one day is utterly ridiculous.
How does anyone have enough patience to sew these in one sitting? When I first started out I took me about a weekend to finish mainly because I kept getting bored but you know lol
Elastic ribbons saved me. I’m someone who has strong feet/ankles, but they’re not that flexible. When I used to do pointe, my shanks were too hard and the ribbons were too restricting and aggravated my tendons. My magic combo was a flexible-soft shank and elastic ribbons. I cried the first time I tried them; it was amazing.
Every dancer seems to have their own style of breaking them in, which is so cool. But I can’t help but think someone really needs to invent a better means of pointe shoe, so they can last a professional longer than just a weekend.
When I had my pointe shoes my studio had their students sew on one elastic that stretched around the foot. But I have really high arches and so my dance teachers told me to double up on the elastics like she does here. I loved my pointe shoes and dancing with them so much. I’m trying to get back into it
Is anyone else watching these for inspiration to sew their pointe shoes? I’m getting my first pair tomorrow and my first pointe class is on Friday! update: one year later and on my fourth pair, new ballet teacher and store to get pointe shoes. the first store only sold nikolays, and i had 3 pairs of those. but now i have blochs! improved so much :) happy dancing 🩰🩰
The current pointe shoes are pretty much the same as back then... The first ever person to wear a pointe shoe was Marie Tagiloni or something like that. If you saw her shoes, they’re almost the same as the are now.
Lovin'Life2016; They need to be able to break down and mold to the dancer’s feet quickly though for performances...it can actually be dangerous to take a brand new pair of pointe shoes and perform immediately... But I can definitely see making practice shoes that can last a lot longer cuz no ones see those so who cares if they’re ugly or whatever 😆
@why not yes, I remember how controversial the Gaynor Minden shoe was when it came out because ballet is so strict and serious about tradition. That's the main reason most pointe shoes are still made in the same way
@@bnicolette14 the reason they were so hated is because gaynors have a critical flaw, they can actually draw you off pointe. Off the box. But that depends on the strength and flexibility of your foot
There is one shoe out there that does also allow you to go on your toes and it is an irish dancing hard shoe. And they are also really hard to break in.
I am also a ballet dancer, JET GLUE one of my favs so far, am poor ballet dancer, I only have 7 pairs, they starting to break quite easily 1-3 max 4 days no more, I try to glue them a little to dance one more time

I literally just started pointe. I absolutely loveeee the way they look on me. I’m still breaking them in. Most people say that they hurt the most when they are stiff. I have a feeling that is true! Love watching these vids!!❤️
She’s so eloquent and well spoken. Her personality is just so refreshing!
It's so cool to see different ballerina's show routines.
*shoe...
i was so excited when this came out i’m pretty sure i’ve watched every pointe shoe video on here
Same. This is honestly my favorite thing and every professional ballerina should upload how they do their shoes bec it's always so different and unique
What a darling girl! I met her father when he was volunteering to assist disabled passengers at the San Diego airport. A retired firefighter. He is so proud of her and well he should be. Don’t you love it when parenting children actually works?😊
She is absolutely delightful. I love the way she explains everything
Out of all of these pointe shoe videos I've watched. This ballerina explained the steps she took best
I don't ever watch ballet, never wanted to be one but I LOVED this video! What a beautiful dancer. I'll never look at point shoes again without thinking of dental floss!!
I’m not even a ballerina but I love these videos
Scout is just THE most adorable, very relatable (despite the fact that I am in no way a dancer). Love her series!
I really wish someone taught me this back when I did pointe!! I have CRAZY high arches and I was never taught where to see my elastics! That would’ve been so helpful, as well as darning the box since my satin would fray in like, a week. This makes me want to go back to dancing
Such a coincidence that this video was just posted because I just had my first two pointe classes this week!
I love that a youtube channel is showing a ballerina and her techniques! it really helps students like me who are newer to pointe shoes
Watch the pointe shop, Katie Ryan and Claudia Dean x
as a ballerina myself my feet are real janked up, but her’s were fine!
maybe cuz she takes care of her shoes, and has propper support all the time.
Ivona Strukar: maybe
Same
Jola W.C; I started dancing pointe when I was 11...and one of the main reasons my teachers allowed me to move up so fast was cuz my big toe and the next two toes are all almost the same length...I have a natural advantage for supporting myself on pointe versus people who just use their big toes
KT Glitter Time
That’s great and all, but what does that have to do with what OP said? (I’m not trying to be mean or anything, I’m just genuinely confused.)
I love watching ballet videos and all about pointe shoes! I’ve never done ballet but I’ve always been fascinated by this dance!
Me too !
I appreciate the ingenuity, craftswomanship and discipline of this video!😊
My teacher would make me sew only to the inner lining! I was never able to go through both fabrics and it would take SO long to sew a pair. I can't believe you can go through both fabrics! I love it
Same here! I am happy to know I am not alone though… I have watched so many pointe shoe videos and have not seen anyone sew only to the inner lining - I was starting to wonder if it was just my teacher or an outdated way??
I need to get back into ballet, I unfortunately had to quit before I got my first pair of pointe shoes but I desperately want a pair. It’s so amazing to see the different ways dancers customize their pointe shoes 😊
The way she was able to articulate all of this so well… just wow. Girl I love you 😩🥰
Yes!!
I love scout so much; i’m not even a dancer but her passion and personality is contagious
I’m so early the sassy comments aren’t here yet.
😂😂
For everyone who shocked at the fact that she goes through a pair every three days, that’s actually a very long time being a professional most professionals go through about 10 pairs a week so for everybody like oh my God only three days chill it’s completely normal.
No hate to anybody just correcting people and making things clear I’m a dancer on point so I know how it is.
It’s actually pretty cool to hear the concerto I play in background when I watch this 😂🤙🏼
ballet is so beautiful!!
I love ballet too.
She's talking about the "arch" a lot, my arch is just non existend
Big feet gang
You can never be a ballerina 🩰
Troy Lee yea, my dreams were kinda crushed when I shot up like a bean sprout
I've got relatively flat feet, but they are strong. I like a bendy shank but a super hard box, and luckily my shoes lasted forever. Unfortunately I didn't get tall enough. I did 17 years of training though.
You don’t have to have arched feet to be a ballerina. I have flat feet but have stretched the top of my ancle so it appears like i have a nice arch when I just have nice and stretchy ancles.
The way she explains everything is really fantastic!!!
Imagine doing all that sewing basically every 2nd day
Her fingers must be so callused 😅 I know my fingers always are!
Gives you an excuse to binge watch Netflix while you sew🤣. I’m getting my first pair this Friday
You can hire someone to sew them for you but you have to mark where things get sewn in because it's different for everyone.
Usually dancers will have a few pairs at a time so she will basically be processing and retiring a shoe everyday
I’m sure most of us don’t even do ballet. Why r we here??
brooo idkkk😂😂
Bc we wish we did
Maria Dragos Exactly. I’m so mad I didn’t take ballet.
@@alliewassogood9382 i did gymnastics and some dance classes but i struggled remembering dance moves and i was also kind of tall so it wasn't a great combo
Came here for the feet, duh. 😂
DEFINITELY enjoyed it :) Thanks Scout! It was uplifting and informative. It's so cool learning about other professions. I never knew ballerinas had to roll up onto a pointe. Thank you!
Who knew you had to be a cobbler, besides a professional athlete? Mad respect!
It's not ridiculous to replace your shoes. You want no joint problems at age 60. Enjoyed the vid!
Her feet are frickin gorgeous!!😂
•__•
I hope you mean this in a non weird way 🤣
KaylahDemi hahahaha it’s a really common thing to say in ballet/dance in general!
@@Kelly-cp8nv okay 😂 I was thinking so by the context of 🤩 vs using 😍 but I do not do ballet. I doubt my big ol self ould even manage it 😂 it's such a beautiful dance form, though.
@@KaylahDemi yes!😂 it's a very common thing to say in the dance world. She has very high arches which makes her feet look nice while she is en pointe!😄
Scout needs her own channel! Very entertaining!
This was such a nicely produced and edited video! Best pointe shoe video I've seen on YT and so thorough!
This was Amazing! I’ve always wanted to know where the elastics go ! And now I really understand what it means when they say the shoe breaks down! Thank You! 💕
She’s so pretty 🙂 love watching pointe shoe care!
i like how detailed she is on explaining why she does some things, not a lot of pointe shoes customization videos do that so great job! 👍👍👍
Some professional ballerinas also wear new ones daily (the company pays for them) - it makes sense!
i have been binge watching pointe shoe videos because I am getting my FIRST pair of pointe shoes tomorrow!!!
I love scout! She’s so sweet and such an amazing dancer! ✨💛
I sow my point shoes so much differently and now I know whole new way to Sow my point shoes
The fact that a 100 dollar pair of shoes is only good for three days of use is just 🤯🤯🤯 I hope they recycle the material to make new ones
They don't, but it's basically all papier mache
tbh the materials for the shoes probably arent worth that much, the price is mostly because each shoe is handmade and require a lot of specific labor that isn't easy to learn
You gotta remember that shes a pro as well, so it's less of a days thing and more of an hours thing
I think i just watched all scout’s videos on different magazine channels lol she is so refreshing to watch. ☺️
wow i’ve never seen anyone cut the vamp before! that’s cool!
Pointe shoes are, like, the most customized thing but these videos are so good for background information!
well done video. pointe shoes preparations are ceaselessly interesting
I could watch her talk about ballet for hours 😍 so fascinating
The level of passion
It sounds like preparing shoes is practically a full time job in itself. I don't know why technology hasn't invented a better, more cost effective, as said, shoe. $100 per pair that may last for one day is utterly ridiculous.
I feel like this is the extreme version of planning when the wash your hair to align with your plans. 🤣🤣🤣
How does anyone have enough patience to sew these in one sitting? When I first started out I took me about a weekend to finish mainly because I kept getting bored but you know lol
Moose Winchester same lol
Oh my gosh it took me a month to finish sewing mine .-.
I once did it in ten minutes
This makes me miss dancing in the studio so much 🥺
Elastic ribbons saved me.
So interesting. Never knew that much went into a shoe. Cool and thank you for sharing.
Scout: "Nothing does what a point shoe does.
Tiktok Ballerina's: *HOLD MY TUTU*
hello step chicken
Eva lmaoo was hoping to see this comment
Oml not on TH-cam tooooo 😩
Look at Irish Dance hardshoes! We go up on those things like crazy and there is be little support compared to a point shoe.
HoLD My CuPS AnD SoCKs
When I had my pointe shoes my studio had their students sew on one elastic that stretched around the foot. But I have really high arches and so my dance teachers told me to double up on the elastics like she does here. I loved my pointe shoes and dancing with them so much. I’m trying to get back into it
me watching having 0 dance experience: 👁👄👁
*shoes pretty*🤩
mavy gigante, to be honest that’s all I care about. 😂
Scout does such a great job on these videos.
Omg more scout she’s great
Is anyone else watching these for inspiration to sew their pointe shoes? I’m getting my first pair tomorrow and my first pointe class is on Friday!
update: one year later and on my fourth pair, new ballet teacher and store to get pointe shoes. the first store only sold nikolays, and i had 3 pairs of those. but now i have blochs! improved so much :)
happy dancing 🩰🩰
Have her comment on TINY PRETTY THINGS! The Netflix show!
I've never done ballet but I have watched enough of these videos, I feel like I can break in these pointe shoes too
Sounds like some bright, intelligent, inventor needs to come up with a new shoe. The present system is so wasteful.
I was thinking the same thing--dance shoe technology has a long way to go!
Glamour, Scout is awesome! Keep creating ballet content.
This is so fascinating!
I’m getting my pointe shoes Saturday!!
Yay! congratulations
@@hollybennett4521 Thanks!

Lol. Sorry just something I thought if
thank you you too!
Her skin and teeth are beautiful. She explained everything so well :-)
There is one shoe out there that does also allow you to go on your toes and it is an irish dancing hard shoe. And they are also really hard to break in.
🌸 she makes a blanket stitch around the point of shoe and calls it little T’s
Omg that’s so cute 🤗✨
I’m a dancer. And watching this is making me think “I should probably sew my new pair” Lol love this!
Random Girl same
Gosh her arches are amazing
I am also a ballet dancer, JET GLUE one of my favs so far, am poor ballet dancer, I only have 7 pairs, they starting to break quite easily 1-3 max 4 days no more, I try to glue them a little to dance one more time
I'm not a ballerina, but all this sewing is making my little seamstress heart so happy!😁❤
