      Its pretty good, but check out Phisics girl. She went a little farther and showed how the 42 degrees is happening because its the maximum angle, that the red light can escape the droplet in that direction. Red light that enters the droplet a little closer to its center has more acute angle of reflection, the light that enters farther from the center reaches maximum 42 degrees, and the light farther away gives more acute angle again. So more red light goes out close to 42 degrees.
      Also she showed how for different colours, this maximum angle is different, for purle its 40 degrees.

    There were two interesting points left out. The first is to imagine the rainbow as a disc. Remember they said the ground blocks the lower part of the rainbow, but you can see that from an airplane. If you could see that disc you would the shadow of your head in the center of the disc. This is related to the idea that everybody sees their own rainbow.
    The second is the dark band between the first rainbow and the double rainbow. That dark contrast is there because it's darker than the first rainbow and double rainbow. Remember, when you see the rainbows that is extra light entering into your eye. The raindrops do not refract light between the first and double rainbow, so there is less light there. Thus the band in between has less light (and gray light at that) than the rainbows, and so it appears darker.
    Oh, a third point. It does not have to be raining where you are. They're just needs to be water drops in the plane of the rainbow. This is how water hoses can make rainbows, for example.

      Red light is reflected _at_ _all_ _angles_ from 0° (straight back to the sun) to about 42°. But it is much, much brighter in the outer 0.5° of this range. And only red light is reflected at 42°.
      Green light is reflected _at_ _all_ _angles_ from 0° to about 41°. Again, it is much brighter in the outer 0.5° of this range. But there are also dim amounts of red, orange, and yellow. This makes the green band less vibrant than the red.
      Violet is bright around 40°, with all other colors present in lesser amounts. And inside 40°, all colors are present in about equal amounts. This is why the "disc" at 0:15 appears gray inside the colors. It really is a filled-in circle, or a disc.
      "The dark band between the first rainbow and the double rainbow. That dark contrast is there because it's darker than the first rainbow and double rainbow." No, it's because no light reflects here, so it is darker than below the first rainbow, or _above_ the second. Yes, the "inside" of the second bow is above it. It is centered on the sun, is about 130° wide, and so is seen upside down just above the first bow.

    What about rainbows after a rain storm with no water droplets? That’s usually when I see a rainbow is after a rain storm.

    The way it works indoors you need water, light and a mirror. The light needs to shine through the water reflect off the mirror and back on to the water as a rainbow except it won't be curved unless the mirror is curved. If your wondering what that curved mirror is outside its called the FIRMAMENT its in the bible.

    Would be cool to learn how to calculate dimentions of the rainbow and distance to it. Distance between red and purple droplets, inner and outer diameter of the whole thing.

      @@richardmahn7589 Technically it wasn't a PBS show and was not on the schedule. It's possible your station didn't carry it. The PBS stations who chose to buy it, usually aired it non-primetime on weekends.

    i wonder now what would happen if i were ascending, what would the rainbow look like if i were still able to see it? i dont think it would dissappear since the curtain of droplets would start from the clouds...?

    That doesn't work. You can see the bend of the entire rainbow. The way he explained it you would only see a little portion at a time.

      You're right. This is the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard. Light bends in an angular way even WITHIN a raindrop but somehow forms an impossible curve when light only travels in straight lines. Hogwash
