If he hangs them, he would be down 3 men. However, that doesn't mean their lives are going to be in easy. Constant drill and fire picket will give them all three time for reflection. They wouldn't be in that situation if they left the booze alone and kept their hands to themselves!!

Speaking in a historical sense; were there any known cases of recidivism for things like this, where men set to punishment duty absolutely refused to improve, whether through spite or pride? If so, what would have happened to them? Would they have simply been hanged when closer to friendly lines?

I dunno if the punishment was appropriate. Sometimes examples have to be made. A hanging offense means nothing if the hanging is ignored.
But! This is definitely a better solution than a court martial where this incident could destroy any relationship with locals. Either you hang them and lose the trust of a fair number of men, or you punish them quietly and viciously on your own, and no one is any the wiser

@@maewest68 I think you are referring to the Indian soldier? I mean, that's a historical fact. The Amritsar massacre was carried out by Nepali Gurkha (while under British command, to be clear) The first anglo-afghan war had England lose so many Indian conscripts, that the mountains between Afghanistan and Pakistan were called the Hindu Kush, literal translation "the killer of hindus". The British made use of local people often without consent, it's not surprising to see an Indian soldier in the British army

Sharpe arrived and reminded the men that he was raised from the ranks and knows everything trick they can pull. Believe me, I know what excessive long-term stress does to a person. That can't be true, as after the South Essex was disbanded, Sharpe sought out another militaristic career, (Remember, Sharpe himself even says "I'm a soldier") it's his lifestyle (until he met the French woman). Also, he had the opportunity to desert (with added bonuses) in Challenge.

But enough about this show, look to Sean Bean’s other roles for a demonstration of my logic. When he played Alec Travelyen in James Bond, he lets his lust for revenge overshadow his moral compass, turning a sympathetic villain into an unrecognizable madman. In Game of Thrones, he foolishly tried bringing honor and integrity into a gritty political intrigue setting where it had no business being. In Troy, he played Odysseus, a brave warrior King with a sharp mind decades ahead of its time. His flaw was that he used his brilliant gifts as weapons of war to spill blood to his own benefit. His being a war criminal later even earned him the Gods’ wrath during The Odyssey. And when he played Boromir in Lotr, he was the main avatar of a human’s response to the One Ring. Humans being the most corruptible species in the books, he takes the least amount of time to be seduced by its power and tries stealing it, later redeeming himself by giving his life to help the Hobbits. I don’t think Sean Bean had too much fun portraying Major Richard Sharpe, a Marty Stu if ever I’ve seen one!

For example 3:23 is very similar to Miller and Horvath pondering on if they should leave the soldiers on that bridge to their fate or help out. Then there's the final battle that for some reason is reminiscent to me of Ramelle, like that Private getting blown up by a cannon, much like Jackson got blown up by a tank. Not accusing the episode of anything, I like it, just wondering if they got some inspirations from there.

Most liberals lean agnostic/athiest and recognize the flaws in all organized religion, not just christianity. To practice your religion for yourself is a fundamental right, which muslims are demonized for doing in america, so they get liberal support. On the other hand, to harangue and harass others in your society relentlessly for NOT practicing your religion, as many sects of American Christianity do, is not a fundamental right, and to be frank is really annoying so liberals tend to stand against it. The worldview is consistent. Islam is a religion equal to christianity, and neither should be shoved down the throats of anyone who doesn't want it.

Disciplined in the battle line certainly. However, people tend to forget that the British infantry of this period contained huge numbers of convicted criminals, hardened street thugs etc. Many were given a choice by the magistrates of execution or enlistment. Which generally meant you didn't get many men of moral character.
And as appalling as it is, rape has always been a weapon of war, a method of spreading fear and terror amongst populations and I doubt there is an army in the world where it didn't happen. Around this time period, there was also the concept of a soldiers code following sieges. If a town/city /fortress resisted, everything was fair game to the besiegers. Theft, rape and murder were par for the course as revenge for the horrors of scaling a breach and a warning to other townships that refused to surrender.
