    Hey shug, haven’t watched the video yet but it will probably be as great as always. You are a very uplifting person shug. I was bored with my everyday life (school etc.). I started to look into hammock camping as I am in the boy scouts and we camp a lot. I got a cheap eno hammock and some daisy chain straps and went off. You were a very positive and helpful person to me both as a hammocker and person. Now, I look forward to every single one of your videos, because you make me feel so happy. Thank you for being a great person.
    (By the way, I just ordered my first whoopie slings and I am excited!)

    I got a cheap Walmart stand that fits my Warbonnet Eldorado. It hangs pretty low to the ground but I've figured out a few ways to raise it up using blocks or natural terrain. It has revolutionized my car-camping anxiety. I now know I'm always able to hang when I can't pick the perfect trees out of a huge forest.

    So, my wife bought my son and I each, one of these stands. This will solve so many problems we run into when planning campouts with our scout troop. Too many times we have struggled to find trees for hanging. Plus, there are times, on the central plains, that there are no trees and I HATE sleeping on the ground. I've already set mine up at home and get the idea of how it is supposed to work. I stumbled across a lot of the things you pointed out without seeing this video. (Luckily, I never found myself on the ground.) We are going to take them on their maiden voyage this weekend with the troop! Whoooooo Buuuddddddyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy!!!

    Now that's a hammock stand worth looking at. Thanks for the demonstration and tips on using it. I was thinking the counterweight using the two chunks of firewood might end up like a medieval catapult during a "mousetrap" but like you said it just buys you a bit of time to adjust your position. Way ta GO, Shug! I especially like how you went to lengths to show the DETAILS of everything - and even put your camera down on the ground to give those close up, "snakes eyes" views. Also, I have a new Russian friend who has some distant views of himself "hanging" out in the red rock areas of Utah - with not a TREE within 15 miles. Different brand - that has 4 poles on each END, etc. Carry ON, my mandolin playin' friend! (Nothing's safe in Vector Eight!)

    I do sleeves for amsteel ( just paracord without the inner strands), for protect it where has contatc with abrasive surfaces or sharp edges as looks these holes in these poles(or like some dutch titanium hardware). Amsteel is poor in abrasion resistance, just like your continuous loop shows detrition. Paracord sleeves works great for that, even the ultralighters could aprove the advantages.

    Hey Boy Scouts (and others) you can put your lashing skills to work and make a similar stand out of 8’ (or longer) pioneering poles! Remember safety first as far as strength of poles, staking that foot end really well (or tie to something solid like a post) and getting in/out on the head side. Obviously not as light or portable as the Tensa4 but a Scout is thrifty! Thanks for the video Shug and thanks to the Tensa folks for a great concept and awesome product!

    This vid could not have come at a better time.
    I started hammock camping with an el cheapo supreme hammock similar to what you used in a previous vid. (which I still have)
    I then upgraded to a bigger and better hammock.
    Now I am planning on some trips on my motorcycle and would like to use my hammock as my primary means for sleepy time.
    However, my next motorcycle trip will have me sleeping in a big field with hundreds of other people and zero trees.
    As such I have been looking into light portable hammock stands.
    This one has been on my radar.
    I was going to build my own but the material is not cheap and I would not have to do any of the engineering if I just bought something that already exists.
    Anyway, On my moto trip I have a 12x12 tarp that I hope to use for hammock shelter and a place to chill.
    I would be interested to see this stand with a tarp set up over it.
    A little porch mode action would be appreciated.
    Mad Love...

    For me, You're doing a great job!
    And I believe that is a good Hammock Stand.
    Two thoughts (rather for the producer): Why not make the head-end poles slightly longer. Then the bodyweight is on the save side and it would give a little more head-freedom.
    The the other idea coming up was to fix the poles to the ground (where they touch it) - this way folding and unfolding the already set-up system whould be even smoother.

      Righto. Many DIY a stand like this and make the poles longer...but not collapsible.

    • @cleverchimp
      @cleverchimp 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Maker here: we experimented with various asymmetries including that one. Bodyweight is already naturally on the safe side when reclining, even with the stand level. Tilting the stand improves the lay and improves the weight distribution at the same time. Longer poles are weaker, so need heavier construction. Also complicates manufacture and assembly. Increases load on foot end ground anchor, increasing incidence of pullout. Finally, the issue is solved decisively by anchoring both ends.

    As always - entertaining as informative. Quick question: It appears in the video that you have the poles extended further out (longer) on the foot end than the head end. Is that so? If so, is that what you were talking about (tweaking) to give it more stability when you get up and out of the Tensa? Thanks for your reply. I haven't committed to the Tensa, yet, but am leaning that way.

    Shug, I'm in need of a self supporting stand because I sometimes (kayaking) end up on a beach without trees. I used to have a handy stand - that one from U.K. with all the cords and anchors - but it depended too much on very secure anchors in the ground - difficult to do on crushed shell beaches or with the lava rock under the soil where I live. I understand the Tensa4 stand only uses anchors to secure the "tilt". So I could possible anchor the foot end on something heavy (bow of my kayak) rather than an anchor screwed in the ground. Soooo - do you have a scale you could attach between the orange anchor and the line and see how much pull is applied to that line in normal conditions. In other words, if I know the stand was putting 35 pounds of pull on that orange stake, I'd know about how heavy a weight (beach rocks/logs) I'd need to put on the end of the line without having to screw something in the ground,
    Thank you for showing how the Tensa4 works and "taking one for the team" to drive home the lesson of getting out on the right side of the line (sounds like the start of a country western song; "... because your mine, I get out on the right side of the line ..."

    • @shugemery
      @shugemery  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      You should reach out to the Tensa4 owners to get that info.....www.tensaoutdoor.com/support/
      I don't have that kind of scale.

    • @shugemery
      @shugemery  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Maybe tie off to a tree or big rock? They say it does not take a lot to hold it. Kayak may be fine but they would be a good source to ask.

    • @shugemery
      @shugemery  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Got this from the Tensa4 owners:
      Raftingtigger measured 40lbs at one point, but we heard quick about cases where that’s inadequate. Amount of tilt and user weight has everything to do with it. At the taco point, of course, the pull is zero.
      In really loose stuff, filling the carry bag with that stuff, tying around its middle, and burying perpendicular to the line for a “dead man’s anchor” works.

    • @cougarmeat8803
      @cougarmeat8803 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Shug, 40 lbs. is not nu'thin so I'll plan to have that end well anchored to something. "... taco point ..." I"ll have to change my points of reference, or not. If you redo your video, you could hang a big hunk of cheese (maybe a Green Bay Packers cheese hat) to the anchor end and show what happens when you go after the cheese (exit on the wrong side of the line). Thank you for your prompt reply and sharing Tensa4's reply.

    It’s really light at 12 pounds, but you pay for it in stability and complexity to setup. How stable is setup once you are in a hammock? And how stable do you feel once in? Would tossing and turning and side movement cause any concern?
    Finally, these ground screws are no go in rocky soils. Can I use snow stakes instead?

    • @shugemery
      @shugemery  6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Very stable. Set up is easy after you do it once or twice.
      Do I look unstable in it?
      You can use whatever kind of stakes you feel fit for you terrain. But make sure it is a hardy stake.

    • @calvinmientke3539
      @calvinmientke3539 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I've never seen you at a time where I thought you were stable. My tree fell down dead. It wasn't any good for hanging a hammock anyway! You did a lot of pointing, showing and splainin Lucy and it still came out looking good. Good device for us poor folk that don't have two trees. MUCH better than those patio pipe thingies!:)

    • @tensacrew
      @tensacrew 6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Concerning stakes, this anchor was the single most versatile we identified, at reasonably low weight and bulk. In practice, I end up not using any stake about half the time I set up the stand, which has been many dozens of nights over the last few months. You can tie the line to anything able to take the tension, which is far less that your body weight, depending how far over the baseline your center of gravity is. Base of a shrub, a big rock, a small rock jammed into a rodent hole, a motorbike, a cooler full of ice, a door hinge pin, even: a tree.
      Re complexity of setup, with practice my setup time is approaching that of many tree hangs where low branches or long spans complicate. I find that I'm choosing to set up the stand instead of use anything but most ideally spaced and situated trees, as easier.

      I do alway. Puts me in my sweet spot.

    • @tensacrew
      @tensacrew 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Me too. Many hammock manufacturers recommend now. If you think about it, having your feet near the wide middle of the hammock, furthest from the gather, makes it easiest to keep a flat diagonal lay. This means your head much closer to a gather than feet. Lowered head end makes this the natural resting point. Symmetric, you tend to slide toward middle with your feet climbing the gather, pushing you off the diagonal.
