Hey there brah, just a note from a long time player here. I've gotten roughly 14 chars up to endgame with about 5 tanks levelled up. There's another way to level up quick, especially in grouped overland content or quick dungeon runs. First up, don't put all your points into health. 4 points is honestly enough. Put the rest into either stamina or magicka, depending on your damage resource. Next, use one health based tank setup, this is your ancient dragonguard, akaviri dragonguard, ebon, etc and one dps based set eg Automaton (stamina) or overcharge (magicka) and that will help with your damage output. Use the bar load out that u are using currently and honestly your health will reach 30k which is more than enough for all base game dungeons. Once you reach dlc dungeons, you can add health enchants and rework your bar to help out with the health. Now, when you are questing, just change up your tank set with a simple damage set like hundings rage. That coupled with the other damage set will ensure you still be able to deal damage while questing. Hell, even ancient dragonguard and hundings rage will help you out throughout your levelling, period. And no, its not fake tanking or whatnot, you have the health for it, you will learn the skills for it and have the damage output to help out with the group. Remember, tanking isn't just adding damage, its to learn mechanics, to grab aggro of the hard hitting people, its to ensure you debuff enemies for better damage by the dps and ensure the healer isn't dead. The rest are just fluff.
@Aidan McSweeney content is still available. No one is forcing you to go into vet dungeons or trials. use a two handed for leveling while still building your tank skills. Just swap to shield hot bar when you turn in quests and they get the xp. This game is so easy in pve you can play it half asleep.
This is excellent advice for tank leveling. I'm about to finish getting my MagDK to 160 but my next character planned is a Necro tank. I'll definitely be looking into using these sets!
Wow, I so wish I had watched this when I first started playing (8 months ago). I have often played tanks in other MMOs (because sometimes even(or is that especially?) moms with multiple kids at home need an outlet to be big, grumpy and smash-happy😺) and so started a tank almost immediately. But questing with her took forever because killing even trash mobs solo took so long. (I unfortunately watched the all wrong tanking vids, because they were all about 'If you don't put almost all points in Health you are a fake tank and a terrible excuse for a human being' (paraphrasing 😉)). She got to 50 and is still my main crafter, but then I mostly shelved her for much more exciting DPS toons. This makes me want to dust her off and get her back into the fight again. Thanks!
When I saw the Ancient Dragonguard set after coming back to ESO a few weeks ago, I instantly thought about leveling a tank. I've already got a Level 16 Nightblade built and ready to power through dungeons during the Undaunted event. Instead of Shacklebreaker, which admittedly I didn't think about, I went with Ashen's Grip for the extra damage and proc effect. I can see where Shacklebreaker might be better as a whole experience but I'd be a bit concerned it making new players skip getting used to resource management while learning.
When I lvl'd a new tank, in order to keep my skills in place i asked my armor to dps and heal for me, to keep it easily repeatable, i chose to run dolmens for easily replacement jewelry (Thunderbugs). I chose thunderbugs but you could easily choose any heavy dps overland set (that has dolmen and delves to run). Then run delve (in that same zone) to get boot / waist in same, this gives you a 5 piece that can be replaced easy every whenever (you'll out level it fast).. The rest, like you, i used vampires kiss, and because this set is player made, you can make a medium shoulder a light hat, and the rest heavy (all training trait, with just dropped white health enchants) this will preserve a 5-1-1 (LMH) split so armor lines level up. It also keeps two 5 sets with decent dps and heals, and the freedom to craft in another set (for a two piece bonus in your weapons / shield / etc). This seems counterintuitive due to monster set, but you wont use them whilst levelling (i didn't, i know people will, but it will depend on where they are at skills/access wise) this is good because if you want to level a bow for your offhand or two hander or staff for a few levels you dont have to get "the right" drop.. you just make what you want and go. Others will say level as a dps (which I've done), but i found my way landed me at 50 with very little to fix / repair and got the practice along the way. Edit: thought i'd mention i did use shacklebreaker (and still do for my werewolf tank), but i found the dps on the other tanks with the thunderbugs. Edit 2: Thought i should say its a really great vid from beginner to vet and stages inbetween, well structured and awesome advice, well done sir.
best way to level a tank? make ur toon a dps and then when you get to level 50 go respec ur skills and attributes for gold or use a respec scroll and do it for free --- easy peezy peeps
I was theory-crafting on the tank I built for Elsweyr and it looked to me like my preferred combination would be Ancient Dragonguard and Orgnum's Scales, with some rather insane resists if you get below 50% health. But my crafter isn't far enough into S. Elsweyr to make the set so I ended up with Adept Rider and Fortified Brass. I'm not leveling but I decided to try and kit the build for some extreme soloing. Figure I'll eventually swap the Adept Rider for the Dragonguard later on. I've always thought you'd just backbar some damage to level a tank, but when I found this character with its skill points refunded, I found Restoration in the back bar. I leveled this character all the way up with healing in the backbar, not damage. I must have been playing it slow because that doesn't sound fun in hindsight at all.
I've leveled 6 tanks(1 for each class), I have 14 characters all at 810. I found the easiest way to level a Tank is just to do Random Normal Dungeons till 50. Quick, easy and now fills out the sticker book
You can level a tank like a mag DPS, then use attribute scroll to switch points to health when you hit 50. You can run frost staff only depending on build, but having S&B is necessary for most builds. Taunt, then damage. Rinse and repeat. DK lizard is easier since they make good DPS and healer as well. You can make a Tank/MagDPS/Healer hybrid by just switching gear. No need to change mundas (Atronach).
I wish I had known all this before I made my tank, I built him as a tank from day 1, so leveling was very slow, I know now that it is way easier to level as a DD/DPS then at 160 rebuild as a tank setup. Oh well we live and learn hey ;)
lol. Those are the sets that I started leveling my first tank with. It was a no-brainer to me because I've made three hybrid characters (so I'm always looking for dual stat sets).
I've been wondering whether anybody else knew about shacklebreaker, this is the first I've seen it recommended for any class or role. Seems to be a good all-rounder, at least for dabblers like myself.
Skill set-ups is where I'm having trouble. My first tank is at about level 31 and it's a Breton Templar. I'll start uploading some clips today. I'm learning and trying to figure out what I need to use. I hate that I can't get Undaunted yet because so many tank skills are locked up there. I wish ZOS would just give every class tools it needs.
I prefer to level up by doing quests and overland content, exploring delves and public dungeons along the way. There are so many zones in this game that I can pick somewhere I have either never done before or no longer remember. I play the character as if it was my first: no cp, no items except what I find, no gold except what I earn, etc. This makes leveling up fun for me because it is not super easy, I still have to pay attention in combat. With a tank, I use 1h and shield because that is my favorite weapon choice anyway (I wish there was a good dps sword & shield option). I put all my attribute points in stamina, and allocate skills so that skill lines level up. Since I am using stamina, I get Vigor from the Assault skil line, particularly since you can get it at level 10 now. I also have my character learn provisioning because the food is a huge boost when leveling. You also get quite a lot of food from login awards, and you could even buy it from guild traders. I also take more of a DPS mundus stone. Once you get to level 40, some of the level-up awards include skill and attribute respec scrolls, so I just use these to switch everything to full tank at 50, or earlier. For dps, what I look for are AOE skills and DOTs, preferably AOE DOTs. Bow and 2h are usually the best options. I prefer to stay on my front bar with 1h/shield, just bar swapping to set off some DOTs, buff or heal. I admit I am not being much of a tank while leveling, other than using 1h/shield, but since this is not my first tank I do not need to learn the dungeons. I still adopt the tank role in world boss fights, or any other encounter where there are several players together. One thing to note: The ESO Chapter zones are much better for this method because the quest awards are more generous. The original zones often have quests that give poor xp and items. With Morrowind, Summerset, Elsweyr and Greymoor (western Skyrim) you get a set item for almost every quest, so you can easily get multiple full sets while leveling, and the overland sets tend to be quite good for leveling. I use the heavy and medium sets, since you can wear two and get all the bonuses. If you are going to wear crafted sets, I would just go with the stamina DPS sets, like Hundings Rage and Night Mother. There's nothing wrong with Shacklebreaker and Dragonguard, but you really only need more DPS while leveling, you rarely run out of resources. As long as you have a taunt, you can still tank if you need to. If you are on PC there is a great mod called Alpha Gear 2 that lets you switch all armor, weapons and skills just by pressing a key. So you could even have a solo dps setup and a tank setup.
I am doing this now. New player. My biggest issue is deciding where to place stat points as I level. I want to go all over until I reach max and repsec, just had to decide on what to go with it. I am too new to have sets.
I’m leveling my first tank and loving it. I’m playing a Nord Warden and find pulling large groups in delves and the over world to be very satisfying. Debuffs and AOE damage comes naturally, but single target DPS is a slog. You mentioned having a spammable, so what would you suggest? Thanks for the content! You reminded me how great ESO is and got me back into the game.
for new players like me who want to be tanks the info you find on the internet is very confusing, for example the points that we spend magicka, health and stamina in this part is so confusing that I can not even understand how many points I should spend on each of these things, some put everything in magicka, another in stamina, others in health and some points in the other two options, I started to build my tank but it is no longer a tank because the info you see on the internet differs and much where you should spend the points, in my tank I have: magicka: 17 health: 10 stamina: 27 at first I would put most of the points in stamina, but then I saw a video that made me think better and spend some points in magicka and health, but as I said there are several different settings and that is where it creates confusion...
I just do overland questing... Gives lots of XP and the quests are also fun to do. I don't put anything into CP. Overland questing is easy enough anyway without getting silly OP using the CP points(which makes the fights boring).... I guess the process is all very individual. I'd rather take my time levelling and just have fun with the character while others have no patience and don full training gear and go for powerlevel grind(not my thing).
I keep my dungeon gear set for when I need to do that and then I run damage dealing sets when I'm just doing questing. I'll switch to my tank stuff for world bosses and events but anything else just damage dealing sets ya can get from dungeons. Doesn't hurt to back bar and level damaging dealing skills when yojr done leveling all your tanks stuff

Now I want to level my tank templar ;). Thank you
So I'm leveling my 7th toon, a Warden tank, I've been mixing 2H, Destro Staff, and S&B on my bars. I do a mix of dungeons and quests and swap out my skills as needed. Here's my question, on your crafted set, I see their level 4 but you're level 20-something; when do you get newly crafted sets as to mess with your level? Will you just keep the level 4 gear until you hit 50? Thanks for your help and great vids. I've been thinking about switching my DK over to a tank since I've seen your Thorn in your Side video plus now that I started this new guy as a tank from level one I'm getting a better feel for how to tank.
And thank you dude! And about the sets I usually stick with them until I’m around 20 but then it’s not too big of a difference but I would recommend level 4 and like level 26 set
While I'm not the guy that posted the video, I main tanks and have leveled a tank in every class except Sorc and one thing I do is I make/get new gear every 10 levels starting from level 16 as the gear seems to start losing it's luster when you're 10 levels above it, in my opinion anyways. You could keep low level gear the whole way but it just makes things take even longer, or at least that how it feels when I'm leveling.
@@kingkaz12 You guys make sense. I was figuring on doing something like that but now at level 33 or 34 I have a set of Ebon with various random traits and I like the little special effects of the armor (wish ESO did that more) but I should put it away and make a new set of training armor to knock out these last 14 levels or so.... I still don't know how I feel about it yet. So far, so good I just wish there was some type of mass taunt but I'm remember back from the old WoW days where the aggro was attached to all your damage.
hi, Im trying to level a tank and this was helpful! How do I join your guild, I dont have a guild at all and would really like to have one where I can learn to tank so when ppl need one I can do it; as I dont see many ppl playing tanks. Thanks in advance :)
As he said that its not for fake tanks... Well I think fake tanks should still use a taunt. Idc if you are a fake tank who still fills its role.. And it only takes away 1 of your skills for the Undaunted taunt.. That its a small price to pay for the long que time. ( I rather have real tanks then fake tanks cause I hate it when its a random dung and the fake tank leaves cause he knows he wont survive..)
How I leveled my 5 CHARS AS TANKS: set up a DPS char and queue as a Tank; It's that simple. Besides Veteran Dungeons and Trials there's nothing a DPS Tank can't tank.
Well i have bit diferent aproach to lvl up new char. I go to ask in guild chat do anyone is doing Skyreach runs and want exp leecher for resets if nobody is doing that i go dolmens. Also i leveling new char only during double exp events.

Actually that choice of sets while levellin up is horrible. They simply dont give enough dmg which is what tanks need while levelling and they also synergize very bad with the levelling system. While levelling ur gear gets outdated. Any set piece bonus with a fixed number is going to drastically decrease in performance. You are lvl 26 and ur lvl4 shacklebreaker gives a little over 1.1k stam and mag when the set normally gives over 2k of each stat. You lost almost half of its power just because you outlevel ur gear. Level up a bit more and the set is useless. The best sets when u level up are those that give u buffs, apply debuffs etc cause they cant outdate. The undisputed winner is twice born star. It simply gives u a second mundus stone that will never get outdated. Use it for more dmg, tankiness, speed anything you want. And you can change it whenever u want depending on the content u are doing. Then you have numerous other choices, mechanical acuity for auto crit, night mother gaze for penetration, maybe unchained aggressor. Or you can use other sets that may not boost ur dmg but at least they wont outdate like seducer or daedric trickery. But the most important thing to do while levelling for smoother experience is to keep ur weapon up to date as much as possible. An outdated weapon can cost way over 1k spell/wpn dmg. So keep it up to date.
How I leveled my tank quickly? I leveled up magicka warden and when she got to lev 50 I changed her CP, skills and all atributes to tank :)
Exactly, can be done in 24 hours with training gear and buffs.

does the level 8 gear you got crafted last you to 50? when should i make new gear
Every 10 levels or so. I build 6, 16, 26, 36, and 46.
@@westakahashi5487 Wow! Sounds like that can be quite expensive…? 🤔
Nice!
I always want to make a dunmer tank but people always say its not that viable but is nightblade the only class good for a tank?
Armory. Nuff said.
Do this with healer to please.
Damm i even got a shacklebreacker tank werewolf build for questing i pop werewolf and reck them
Cool
As he said that its not for fake tanks... Well I think fake tanks should still use a taunt. Idc if you are a fake tank who still fills its role.. And it only takes away 1 of your skills for the Undaunted taunt.. That its a small price to pay for the long que time.
( I rather have real tanks then fake tanks cause I hate it when its a random dung and the fake tank leaves cause he knows he wont survive..)
Started a tank today. Havent tanked since WOTLK in WoW. How can this be borring? Insta queues. i regret so many things playing dps this long
Can I make my Necro a tank ?
You have literally told me nothing for 2 minutes and 40 seconds
Only 4 tanks.? Im sitting at 9 now
I dnt wanna give my build completely so it doesn’t get nerfed but i will say maelstrom 2 handed is a tanks best friend to do any damage at all
How I leveled my 5 CHARS AS TANKS: set up a DPS char and queue as a Tank; It's that simple.
Besides Veteran Dungeons and Trials there's nothing a DPS Tank can't tank.
Now do Healers 😭😭😭
Well i have bit diferent aproach to lvl up new char. I go to ask in guild chat do anyone is doing Skyreach runs and want exp leecher for resets if nobody is doing that i go dolmens. Also i leveling new char only during double exp events.
That’s not bad!
Wat if ur not in a clan
@@Joe_doesnt_know Well unless you are realy antisocial (idk why playing MMO than) finding 2-3 guilds in ESO is like 10 minutes and 2 realy good guilds like 2-3 days :)
@@siwiutki1987 I never said I’m anti social I Jsit don’t know how to join a guild
@@Joe_doesnt_know Press G if im correct (im not sure what was original keybind) and than you will have Browse guild option , than after you find guild you want select apply to guild option. After that you need to wait till guild oficer or leader will accept your application. You can also search for guild on forums, facebook, etc...
I’d like to join the guild @hawk154
