As a soldier traveling years ago, I put a novelty pen that I had gotten at a conference into my carry-on without thinking anything about it. The pen had batteries in it and would light up when you clicked it. During the x-ray with security they pulled me and my bag aside. What they saw on the x-ray was something that looked like a potential detonator plunger device (this was a year after 9-11). Understandably, I told them to keep it and I'd get a new pen when I got to my location.
I put any items that could be flagged into zip lock gal bags and put them into a bin. Snacks, items like small shampoos etc into another, and protein bars into another. Easy breezy.
I got experienced my first TSA checked bag search like a month ago. I think it was because I was returning with a plant I purchased at a Christmas market. It’s was a domestic flight
Cell phones have lithium batteries and you're not supposed to have them in checked baggage. They can, in theory, confiscate them. I have had one in my checked bag by accident one time and had no issues, but it's a gamble.
years back , I was returning from Istanbbul to the states and arrived from another city very early... they marked SS on my stub and voilaa ,,, they searched my bags.. only figured it was because I had plenty of time to check...
I haven't been to Istanbul yet... it's definitely on my list!!! Their computer will select people for random checks. I have never figured out the rhyme or reason. I've been randomly selected in first class and economy, with plenty of time and with little time, and I'm TSA Precheck/Global Entry and I have even been randomly discarded on that on two occasions where I had to go through the normal security.
My checked bag came off the belt crudely wrapped in a large plastic wrap. The lock was still fastened and the zipper was partly opened. There was no note telling me my bag was opened or searched by TSA. We went to baggage claim at our final destination in Los Angeles where I found my bag opened. I was furious and the agent (at 2:30 am in Los Angeles) gave me a new suitcase. I'm still angry and that was 10 years ago.
I'm wondering if it was damaged by the baggage handlers and it wasn't ever opened by security... maybe a possibility. I had a suitcase with 4 wheels when it was checked and it came back with 3 wheels and American Airlines gave me a large bag to put my things in and they took the suitcase for repair. About a week later, it was delivered to my house via FedEx with a new wheel. Between the repair and the FedEx delivery, that had to be a very costly thing.

This is great! Thanks for sharing!
I pack all my electronics accessories (including power banks) in one pouch, as accessible as my liquids pouch
I also put my weird items all in one pouch - eyeglass screwdriver, sewing scissors, seam ripper (I have texture issues with some tags on clothes), etc
I do the same. I pull mine out when I go through security as I find it is less likely searched.

I'm guessing since it was a domestic flight that they didn't give you any troubles over the plant
How about cell phones?
