    I had this as a kid, that giant spacebase made me drool as a 8 year old.... still does! but you needed sooo many peaces for that! I was very fortunate as a kid and had a huge collections of classic space. But no way i could come even close to building it back in the day!

    I loved to build my own creations even as a kid, but I was always aware that everything looked blah to me. The colors and shapes just weren't right. Now I'm just thrilled with all the changes the Friends line has brought.
    But I do love this concept of showing you some instructions and then a large scene. I might copy that idea ;D

    I like how there was thought to make the builds mostly more complex the further you got through the book.

    In this and an earlier idea book review, you commented a couple times about the "focus on" the primary colors. Maybe you don't remember, but at that time, those basically were /all/ the colors.
    My brother and I acquired about 35k pieces between the mid-'70s and '92, mostly in the '80s. Before moving them from my parents' house, I took a photo. There was one bin full of transparent parts, another with plant parts (green and brown), the brown boat hulls and a few other pieces from the Pirates line, and some brown minifig tools. Oh, and some horses were brown.
    The rest-probably 32k+ of those pieces-was a sea of red/blue/yellow/white/grey/black. That was it-everything was those six colors with the occasional special piece in green or brown. Colors outside of those 8-and green and brown were very rare, only used for a handful of pieces-didn't really start showing up until the late '80s. Tan and dark grey were still exotic colors in '92 (let alone '87).

    I have this same idea book and I was flipping through it the other day and it occurred to me, many of the things they present to you are nearly unattainable. I was thinking, which sets would I need to build each one of these ideas? Specifically it got my attention the spaceship at 16:50. The vertical hinges used to attach the double canopies, that piece didn't exist in light gray in 1987!! Not in classic space or any other theme!! It wasn't until 1999 or 2000 that a set came out with that piece in light gray. What do you think about that? Not to mention that to build this spaceship (and many other ideas) you would need about four or five of the large sets of that era!! Just take a look at all those arrow tiles, and four wing pieces. To get those you would need the Solar Power Transporter 6952, the Gamna V laser Craft 6891 and the FX Star Patroller 6931. Not to mention that the gray cockpit piece was exclusive to the Intergalactic Command Base (6971). Also take a look at the spread where they show you the large blue base. Take a look at the pieces used, especially the windows with yellow glass. How many sets (and duplicates!!) would do you need to replicate that!!
    Of course I'm aware that these are just building ideas, but come on.. It's like they are suggesting buy, buy, buy!! 😂😂😂
    Great ideas nevertheless, of course you can modify them to your liking.

    When people nowadays say that Lego sucks now and it used to be so cool back when it was just primary colors and basic bricks, I really can't fathom why they think that. These were cool and all, for their day. But as a kid these kind of basic sets held my attention for so much less time because it was so limiting in what you could convincingly build. Lego now is just objectively better because you can still make everything from this book if you really want - and also a near infinite number of other things that couldn't have even been conceived of. Just try making a Millennium falcon out of those pieces. I just don't get it.

    • @joshuanelsonanimations
      @joshuanelsonanimations 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I can't speak for everyone, but for me it wasn't the variety of pieces that was the problem, it was the actual content of each set, such as amount of minifigures, the cost, cool looking guns instead of stud shooter, etc. Plus, back then they had a lot more sets for each theme, including easy-to -get minifigures that are increasingly harder to get each year because of the prices and extra content. But hey, that's just my take on it.

    • @Lordodragonss
      @Lordodragonss 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      There are actualy two sides of it - now when you build a set you get less basic bricks. That's a bad thing as It's proved that basic bricks are asier for kids to use. (that's why Classic space is still amazing, with not descriptive features). New sets are much more detailed nowadays. But a lot of them are really hard to replicate for kids, and treated to much as complete toy, not as a jump pad for imagination. IMO older sets had much better action features (that were easy to buildl and use in your own builds) while today they usualy use shooters as main feature.
      I also don't like how many sets are just fig centered :/
      But yes we get a lot of great new playsets in recent years, amazing set designs like that huge Ninjago set, or whole Elves line. New amazing pieces every year are always a good thing. But IMO lego should slow down a little :)

    • @JANGBRiCKS
      @JANGBRiCKS  8 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      The whole idea of modern sets including fewer "basic" bricks & plates is a myth as well, easy to disprove by spending quality time going through part inventories for sets of different eras from compatible themes. I've done some of that grunt work myself and found that new sets generally have far more basic pieces outright. Similarly the idea that old sets were just made of basic bricks is a misconception. Creative buckets and "Basic" brick sets used to make the simplest of creations for the youngest of Duplo graduates, sure. The main line stuff of the 80s, though? Packed with specialized pieces, and heavily reliant upon them at that. All LEGOLAND Town cars were built with 1-piece specialized full-width chassis, specialized roofs, and specialized 1-piece full-width fenders. At least today's fenders are separate so you can use them on 4-, 5-, even 8-wide vehicles. I during my collecting & building of every single Classic Space set from the 1978-1988 solid-color minifig era, the number of parts I handled that were not rectangular was astonishing. Today's sets simply use more parts on the whole to accomplish the same sort of things with significantly increased size and detail.

    30 year old stickers. Do they still stick??? Pretty Classic LEGO System style building here, a simpler time without so many unique parts, may seem limiting to some, but this was my LEGO. Although I didn't own much from that era, I was just turning 5 around 87, so I didn't have much, more of the 90's era sets were what I got, with a few late eighties numbers. Loved what I had, awesome looking books like this always excited though.
