Breaking Bad is one of the best shows of all time. Some of its best moments come from how the writers fearlessly cornered Walter White into some of the biggest David VS Goliath type moments in TV history. Using strategy, however, he always came out on top.
In this video I analyze every single time Walter White was cornered by a stronger opponent, and how he brilliantly used strategy to help himself come out on top. I talk about my philosophy on fight scenes and put all of these Breaking Bad moments in the context of my Fight Spectrum Chart.

isnt he a chemistry teacher not physics
Yeah, he corrects himself later on, mighta just been a slip up or script error.
Good catch lol, I think it’s because my high school physics teacher was bald too 😂
It was ironic trust
He has a theoretical degree in physics
Masterful engagement bait for comments 🧠
The underdog strategy list doesn't cover deception, but to make it start with S, I'll just call it subterfuge.
I'd argue that that is covered by "Sneak Attack"
Yeah, I like subterfuge as an addition. I have noticed he sticks a lot of general deception under Sneak Attack though
I learned Walter is playing a human rogue. Sneak Attack. Sneak Attack. Sneak Attack
With like +1 to charisma, proficiency in intimidation and persuasion (not deception or performance, despite what he would have you believe)
I feel like we're stretching the definition of fight scene a bit but if I get to see more unique ways of glazing breaking bad we good
Oh we’re totally stretching it lol
Honestly, I agree with stretching the definition of a fight scene here, but ever since watching this guy’s analysis of fights and what they add to the story, I’ve enjoyed applying that analysis to any situation with a winner and a loser.
Maybe changing it to analyzing conflict would be better, as it’s essentially the same thing.
Yeah I've heard situations like this described as "non battle battles" where there isn't a direct conflict where the two sides interact in a normal way, but instead fight by proxy, or using abstract methods to gain the upper hand. I think super eyepatch wolf came up with the phrase in a video about non battle battle manga, it's a cool video.
For the final fight vs Jack, I always thought that Walter assumed he actually was partnered with Jesse, and wanted to kill them both. Seeing Jesse's condition, he changed his mind at the last minute and saved Jesse instead.
I think Walter’s biggest weak spot was that deep down, he always cared for Jesse
He certainly puts Jesse through hell in the series. An abusive love maybe, but yeah, I could see that.
Vince Gilligan confirmed it. (Breaking Bad: 10 Behind-The-Scenes Facts About The Finale - Screenrant)
You are growing to become one of the most interesting TH-camrs I’ve ever watched, your videos have helped me develop my story in working on publishing in the coming years
🤙🤙
We love Vince putting his creatures into situations.
Forget strategy, the real reason Walt won all these fights is because he is bald. Other than overlooking this, great video Squampctopus.

Turning on the facecam took away my "disembodied voice immersion". I cried
The face reveal wasn't real. It can't hurt you.
Luckily Walter never had to face the IRS
Shout outs to Skylar White
Notice how in almost every fight Walter has to sacrifice his morals. The stickier the situation the further down the rabbit hole of becoming a monster he went to get out of it.
i never thought there would be a youtuber called Squampopulous who makes the best video essays ive ever watched
I would argue on the basis Gus and Walt are highlighted so heavily for their cunning and intelligence that Gus vs Walt is a world cup match, W video though.
In terms of strategy it was definitively a world cup.
Walter is definitely not “clearly overselling” when he’s convincing Jessie about Brock. Brian Cranston didn’t even know Walt was lying in this scene until like a week after filming it.
Your fight-scene rubic is quite excellent. Given its application here, I would argue that it is not merely a rubic for fight scenes, but for all conflict, violent or peaceful.
I wonder how this could be applied in a text with conflict, but not necessarily violence. Better Call Saul would be a good example.
I literally finished breaking bad two days ago and I’m so glad I did so I didn’t get spoilers.
Great video.
Hank beating Jesse up was the beginning of the next episode.
I was expecting you to just cover the obvious Tuco, Gus, Hank and Jack but you meant EVERY stronger opponent. Great video! 👏🏻

This is the best episode yet! Also you are the best with the fight analysis because it got me to watch Kung fu panda 1 again and it's great!
love the formating of the video and how straight forward u presented eveyrthing! definitely worth the sub
I just finished my second full watch through of breaking bad less than an hour ago and got this in my recommended. The timing is crazy 😂
this was cool in a different way since this is one of the few times i've seen the piece of media you're talking about already, it's amazing seeing how you put these "match-ups" giving me another angle in appreciating how this show was so compelling
I love your fight scene series; please do 12 Angry Men (the characters fighting aren’t in mortal danger, or for the most part fighting physically, but I still think it’s a great showcase of David Vs Goliath).
one cool thing ive noticed in my subjective experience is that the more i watch walter turn into a drug kingpin by doing more and more terrible things, i have a conflicting feeling that both hates him to the core as well as hope that he succeeds
1:02 I disagree. I wanna see a 1v1 between walt and hector.
you never fail to actually make me go into the stories i watch on a deeper level. you also make kinda boring things very fun, you deserve more subs!!
Great video! I would love to see more of these sequential fight breakdowns
16:37 Brian Cranston said that at that episode he just read the current script and didn't know it was actually him that poisoned the kid. So, the "over selling" part is because of this.
I want to say that it has been an absolute pleasure watching your channel and listening to the character plus fight breakdowns from a story telling perspective and a viewing experience. Everything you’re doing to make this channel great, please continue to make 🎉.
You became my favorite channel. Good work!
I don't think that Walter noticed Jesse finding the rock 9:59, he was just pissed and admitted it to Tuco on the moment of anger, very Walter like in my opinion.
Great analysis! The one thing I would put into question is categorising Walter’s knowledge and usage of chemicals as ‘synergy’. I’d rather call it a straight up straight, a weapon even. I see synergy more as something between two or more characters doing different things. The chemicals working together are more akin to different materials, let’s say a stick, a stone and a rope, that can be used to craft a lethal weapon. Knowing how to create the weapon and being able to use it is knowledge, a skill, a direct aspect of that one character by himself.
2:37 there’s a gang tattoo that signifies this exact situation if they leave
that VPN ad was fucking BRILLIANT
new to your channel but i’ll definitely stick around, good shit bro
Finally, ive been waiting for another video to drop since ive seen them all by now 😭
Hey, awesome vid as always. If we’re stretching the definition of “fight scene” id love to see you analyze some of the arguments in succession. The writing in that show is so great you could probably analyze it under similar criteria.
I didn’t think there could be a new and unique take on this awesome show but ofc Squampopulous can just come in and cook up another masterpiece 💯
Love your stuff man. I use your rubric for defining fight scenes while writing and editing!
11:25 you guys didn't know? it's pretty simple how a battery works, i don't even study it, i just like science
Great channel and fantastic video, I looked through the rest of your videos and noticed you mention a few anime and was wondering if you ever get the time, you should look into Irresponsible Captain Tylor. There are several battles in that show where the main character is the underdog but through complete dumb luck he's able to pull through, so it'd be interesting to view those from your 5 S's of strategy.
This is prime youtube content. you are doing amazing.
Awesome analysis and commentary man! Really liking your long form content style and methodical approach!
If you want to see more situations like wit battles, I could recommend you the movie 'Law Abiding Citizen', a movie that's not been talked about enough
You forgot the fight between the cop and Walter.
very underrated channel
ah fuck now I have to watch breaking bad again
I wake up today and immediately get a hearty breakfast of Squampopulous video. It's a good day
squampopulus post x breaking bad? ik today is set out to be legendary
AND HIS FIRST SPONSOR? LETS GO W’s ALL AROUND
This title and title card almost looks exactly like the 'just an observation' channel. Borderline misleading.
squampopulous my beloved
we got breaking bad fight scene analysis before gta 6😭🙏
I love squampopulous!
13:20 is also definitely a weak spot for Hank
Your videos are giving me better techniques on writing my book. If im clever enough, ill drop a small easter egg in homage to you 🎉
16:40 Bryan actually didn't know that it wasn't Gus who did that when he filmed the scene you're showing, so if you think he's "Clearly over selling it" it's probably only colored by the context, since even the actor didn't intentionally drop any hints it could have been Walt, because again he didn't know.
Writers knew and they wrote the script, so part of the overselling could fall on them. If Bryan knew he probably would have acted it out the same way, he’s a fantastic actor, it’s not like they needed to keep that from him to make the performance better
Can we get now all other fights in the show?
Squambobulated down
Walt could definitely overpower Holly, and actually overpowered Brock.
Waltuh
You made the correct comment, congrats
Everyone else fails
Dexter is a great show, especially for season 4, but it has many many bad moments where he gets free escape cards, would be nice to see it as like an opposite of this video, how not to do a david vs goliath
*chemistry teacher, not physics.
Physics teacher you know. Shows he hasn't watched the show😂
You forgot the most important fight scene of all, the only one that Walter actually loses. Of course I'm talking about Walter vs The Fly. He never had a chance there and Jesse deus ex machinaed his ass out of that very unfavorable matchup.
Holy shit you actually done it
Season 2?
Oh god I didn't expect the face reveal lol
Perhaps you've shown it before, but it's the first time I saw it lol
Such a good show
YOU ARE NOT A TALKING HORSE???
I LOVE SQUAMP ❤️

Have you read Usogui? I think you will like it
Could he defeat Goku though?
