Why Do Robot Movies Keep Breaking Our Hearts?
With the Wild Robot’s release this year, I noticed a striking pattern with movies like Wall E and the Iron Giant: Robots Break Our Hearts. That shouldn’t be the case, considering a robot is nothing more than code and metal, yet I’m willing to make a bet that if you saw The Wild Robot in theaters, you cried.
In this video, I break these stories down to determine what it is about robots that keeps hitting us right where it hurts. I talk about how to write a character using weaknesses, and a general approach to storytelling based on purpose. I hope you enjoy!

How A Fight Between The Strongest Should Settle A Story
มุมมอง 127K14 วันที่ผ่านมา
The Fight Spectrum is a tool I made up in my first video titled "Why 90% of Fight Scenes Are Bad". It is used to analyze a fight scene based on the parties' strengths. This helps categorize every fight into one of four buckets: Fly Swatting, David Vs Goliath, Toss Up, and World Cup. From here I assign specific requirements to each bucket, and if the fight meets those requirements, it passes my ...

The Worst Perfect Ending or The Perfect Worst Ending?
มุมมอง 19K2 หลายเดือนก่อน
Everyone loves a happy ending, but what every perfect ending has in common is not, in fact, happiness. Today I try to break down how to write a perfect ending to a story. I analyze two examples in this video: Uncut Gems and Sound of Metal. I believe these movies have perfect endings, and I don't think they follow a traditional structure. I talk about conflict, resolution, and introduce Kishoten...
When The Characters Make The Jokes, Not The Writers
มุมมอง 450K3 หลายเดือนก่อน
Who doesn't love a well timed joke? After all, laughter is the best medicine. What about jokes that... aren't well timed? Too often I see movies ruin their narrative and unnecessarily break tension by using comedy at the wrong times. There is a growing trend in dialogue where people are recognizing irony vs sincerity. People are sick of movies not taking themselves seriously! In this video, I b...
The (Almost) Lost Art of Intention
มุมมอง 10K3 หลายเดือนก่อน
I want you to think of the best movies and television shows of all time. Somehow, they all put the audience in that special place that only art bring us to. How do they do it? What does all good art have in common? The purpose of this video is purpose. I talk about how the Lion King 1994 is one of the most memorable and moving movies of the last 30 years, and how its successor the Lion King 201...
Why All Plot Twists Are Doomed
มุมมอง 312K3 หลายเดือนก่อน
What is better than a plot twist? My favorite movies all seem to have one thing in common: a fantastic plot twist that recontextualizes the entire story. Rather than talk about Plot Twists 101, this video instead covers something that nobody seems to be talking about, a phenomena I am calling the plot twist paradox. I cover some absolute classic movie including Get Out and Shutter Island, so le...

Why 90% Of Fight Scenes Are Bad (And Why 10% Are Good)
มุมมอง 802K4 หลายเดือนก่อน
A fight scene is a complement to a story's narrative. I think that all too often, writers seem to forget this fact. In this video, I explain a system I call the "Fight Spectrum" that categorizes every fight scene ever. I analyze several examples of both good and bad fights and break down my reasoning for why I think they pass or fail. Timestamps: 00:00 - Intro 1:08 - Prerequisites 2:43 - The Ch...
Minor correction: Netero is NOT the strongest human in the world, not by a long shot. He's certainly one of the strongest, and was the strongest in his prime, but his old age undoubtedly weakened him. Additionally, Mereum isn't a little stronger, like the chart shows in strength, but at least double Netero's strength. It isn't evened up by Mereum not wanting to kill Netero, the ant king is only doing that because he knows Netero has zero chance of victory.
You mean canon fodders? Fly swatting sounds stupid! Also, if you're presenting an intellectual discussion, don't use a JJK as an example, that an anime is definitive garbage by default.
I think your explanation of the Gojo vs Sukuna fight was awesome. I had not heard any one describe the significance of the fight like that and I think it provides a more clear perspective on it and the result of the fight. Thanks!
Some of my absolute favorite fights are David vs Goliath.
I think good example of character not using there full power was Madara vs 5 Kage. He just wanted to make fun of them and play a bit as he was bored.
I hate tomatoes too! Great job on your first video!!
Gojo lost because Gege hates him. The character always loses to the author lmao. Also how did Sukuna summon Mahoraga, it has been established before that Sukuna has to use the hand symbol but he never did during the fight.
Crazy how pro wrestling can fit into these categories
Honestly you should have went over jet stream Sam vs raiden from metal gear rising
I wonder if someone else has that one friend when you watch a twisted movie together, and he is obviously clueless the whole time of what's happening, and then when the reveal drops he just says "Yeah, just like I thought right from the start" just in order to pretend that he is smart
I'm sorry but this video is a terrible advice on fight scenes. A good fight scene has nothing to do with either strategy or characterization, otherwise you have to say all of jackie chan movies have bad fight scenes. This is laughable, fight scene has nothing to do with the story. Stakes can definitely help elevate a fight scene but it's not necessary. For a good fight scene you need an awesome and innovative choreography and awesome camera work and obviously stunt work. Just watch any 80s or 90s Hong Kong action movie. It all depends if the fight itself is good or not. It has nothing to do with stake or all this nonsense you're talking about. Good fights in of themselves are entertainment enough you don't need anything else. Otherwise people would stop watching boxing or ufc. I also find it laughable you say the attack on titan scene was a good fight scene when it wasn't even a fight scene lol. This is so bad come on man.
10:22 is genius. The thesis of this whole video, the heart of it all, has JUST enough time to breathe… before getting abruptly cut off with a cheap joke. It shoots us out of the sincerity and back into cynicism, the disconnected irony where the “victim” of the joke is our investment, setting us up perfectly for the conclusion to bring those two ideas together. Incredible work!
Waiter waiter! More extremely high quality video essays from lesser-known youtubers please!
I'd say Sukuna won due to be more Scrappy, resourceful, and flexible. While Gojo was so confident in his own techiniques, Sukuna utilized every single tool he could to come out on top
Bro just watching this made me teary eyed wtf. I hadn't heard of Wild Robot yet but will definitely keep it in mind for the next time I feel like I need a good cry
How long until we get live action into the spider-verse?
While I'm generally not a fan of the one-thug-at-a-time choreography, I think it does make sense most of the time. Most people haven't actually trained to fight together -- If they try to rush a single opponent carelessly, there are pretty decent odds they'd get in each other's way in the process. When facing a strong opponent, an uncoordinated group may not try to rush them all at once especially if there's no clear leader. They'll inch in, trying to test the waters and feel things out, and it's only when enough of them start moving in that the rest of the group commits and follows. Edit: Another good flyswatting scene is the fight in the park at the end of Iron Man 2, when Iron Man and Warmachine team up. They also offhandedly address the "why didn't you use your strongest move from the jump" when Tony talks about his move being a "one-off" (so he wanted to maximize making it count).
a great example to use for movie fights would be the last dragon 1985 one of my favorite movies with amazing fights.
i went to subcribe but realized i already did
New-ish channel my ass. This video is phenomenal.
Something about Akutami I love is how closely he plants a concept to take advantage of it later, and it got missed a lot by weekly twitter scan-readers. The moment Sukuna used Mahoraga as a medium to remote Cleave Gojo was the confirmation that he was connected to Mahoraga, and that summoning the creature completely didn't end that connection.
Saitama i want this kinda fight😢
Good fight was trash
Get Out's plot twist felt unsatisfying to me, as even though you know things are wrong, how can you ever guess what's actually happening? In contrast, a movie like Arrival's plot twist felt very rewarding, as the way everything was presented made so much sense, yet I still didn't catch just how much of it was connected until it was all laid out at the end. Speaking of great plot twists, the Sixth Sense was insane for me, as my friend's teenage sister offered to take us with her (we were 10 or 11), but we didn't arrive until 10 minutes into the movie. The ending totally blindsided us! Then when I finally got around to watching it as an adult, I was shocked to find out Bruce Willis's character was shot in the very beginning, only I missed that as a kid! I'm not sure if the twist at the end would've been nearly as crazy to me had I known that from the start! 😂
HOW DARE YOU MAKE ME CRY WITH THESE MOVIES AGAIN!!! WHO GAVE YOU THIS RIGHT? 😭😭😭😭😭
Thanks for your videos. You are a true scholar.
At 6:26 you lied. In every version of the future Thanos gets all the infinity stones on the original gauntlet Eitri made for him. In Endgame Tony made his own gauntlet out of his nanotechnology which is what his own suit is also made of too. It forms and creates whatever Stark thinks of because it was connected to his brain. It was basically what he developed in Iron Man 3 with the prehensile Mark 42 suit but even more advanced. In the final battle Tony/Iron Man is able to steal the infinity stones right of Thanos by simply touching him with his suit. The instant he touched the new nanite gauntlet it became an extension of his suit for a few seconds, just long enough to move the stones off of thanos and onto Tony. This was only possible because Dr Strange made a deal with Thanos to spare Tony’s life in exchange for the time stone. This was the 1 in 14,000,605 outcomes that worked. If Stark had died then he wouldn’t have been able to make the nanotech gauntlet. You called it “BS” which is just 100% factually not true. The Russo brothers and head writers put a ton of thought into the story they wrote. It was a SINGLE story told across 2 movies. Both infinity war and endgame were filmed all together. The editors simply divided it into 2 movies because you cant make a 5 and a half hour movie. You seem like a genuinely intelligent person. Im flat out confused how you could miss this. Plus there's been seriously tons of explanations on everything in the MCU for years now. You couldve found this in literally under 5 minutes if you had tried.
In confused, You said about escalating moves in a flyswatting fight (show the character taking out 2 people at once, then 5, then 10, showing new moves and abilities each time) then complained about Thanos not instantly using the blast that incapacitated multiple opponents
Finally someone that gave me closure on gojos death. For the longest time I was upset by his death but honestly it’s because he is made out to be a dream character people want to be. But in truth as you said he was uncertain about almost everything he did, he just got away with it because of his strength. He was so immensely talented, but the moment he came across someone on his level in Sukuna he lost. Sukuna started preparing for there fight from episode 1 when he first fought Gojo. He got Megumis body specifically to beat Gojo, and Gojo was just to lackadaisical about it. He went into the fight with the strongest in history with a yolo attitude and a I’ll make it up as I go along. Thanks for the excellent analysis
Sukuna won because he had more experience of fighting toe to toe with someone that can push him through the limits as he earned his title himself while Gojo was blessed and has no experience fighting toe to toe with anyone Infact, Sukuna by summoning Agito and Maho, is the first time Gojo has been set at a disadvantage. Both determination were solid as a rock. Experience is the word that fills the blank. Yuji won Sukuna through "enlightenment" driven by "experience" of what could and could-not
can you make like a short or something covering the final fight for godzilla minus one? that'd be really cool to see.
Jack the Ripper v Hercules, in Record of Ragnarok has all the five strategy points in the David v Goliath category
We are 🐎
While I hate to be a party pooper, sukuna winning was kind of an asspull. If we take a look at gojo's abilities, he has 1 very unique application of blue that allows him to teleport around. Why does this matter, well, as soon as Sukuna opened his domain, gojo could, instead of clashing with him, just teleport out of sukuna's range and come back once sukuna cancels it, at this point mahoraga hasn't adapted and sukuna is left without a domain to use nor a technique. It is here that gojo can just come back and use infinite void, frying sukuna's brain and winning. While I like to think that deep down Gojo didn't do that because he wanted to test his limit and use all of his abilities now that he was given probably the only chance in his life to go all out after his awakening, I believe it is clear that this was just gege either forgetting about teleportation or intensionally excluding this factor so that he can finally kill off gojo and let the main cast shine while also establishing sukuna as an even greater threat than he already had.
❤❤❤
Chimera Ant Arc is absolute peak
I'd like to suggest another david vs goliath fight not mentioned, everyone vs founding titan eren/the rumbling in attack on titan season 4 It's probably my favorite example of a weak winner using insanely good strategy and synergy to overcome an impossibly strong opponent, with eren being thought to be pretty much unbeatable Sacrifice was also a very strong theme through the whole struggle, with everyone willing to lay down their lives to stop the rumbling, with the most notable example being hange sacrificing her life to buy everyone else time
I think a missed perfect example for characterization is the first Itachi vs Sasuke fight. Before this fight, Sasuke was always sort of the ace (except for the bridge fight vs Haku almost killed Sasuke), and I was left wondering "Man Sharingan and Sasuke is so OP, how does he even lose in a 1v1?" And then they threw Itachi on him and the answer was "throw an actual ninja at him", not only that but we got infinitely more info about Itachi than we previously had, other than hes Sasukes brother and he killed his clan. Loved the video, but I seriously think you overlooked this example and it was such an obvious one in my opinion, would love to hear your thoughts!
I would argue that there was a clear winner between Merum and Netero. At the start Netero said that he will tell Meruem his real name, if he makes him admit defeat. At the end Netero, before killing both of them, he tells him his real name, thus admitting defeat. Its just that who wins the fight didn't really matter. At the end of the day, Meruem was always gonna die, not due to being beaten in a fair fight, but due to human ingenuity when it comes to malice.
Sukuna winning was %1000 plot armour lmfao
Let’s be real. DBS did this trope better than the rest. I am talking about whis.
The Invicible example is excellent, but I'd submit Vader v. the Rebels at the end of Rogue One as the best "flyswatting" fight ever to appear on screen.
18:15 it wasn’t by chance that gojo was able to pull it off-it’s because maho had adapted to blue and this couldn’t be pulled by its attraction but gojo could which meant he would get there first. “mahoraga’s adaptation had backfired” is how i think they put it in the manga
This video got me motivated to read the rest of jjk and tbh. I was not disappointed. THAT SHIT WAS GAS!!!!!!!!!
Mid example, Good will hunting isnt funny at all also very overrated
Don't you think there's certain plot twists throughout mediums, that are inherently made WITHOUT heavy hinting?
The sad thing is, scientific discovery is showing we have no free will, our dreams are thus determined by this and in reality, love is conditional, even from parents. Robots let us explore and express our desire to be human, which embodies a naive freedom, maybe even longing.
I think it'd be more accurate to say Gojo lost the fight because he was less "satisfied" rather than "uncertain" the last chapter where Yuji flashes back to his conversation with Gojo during their two months of training is why I think this. Gojo said "This is confidence, confidence i've never had before," in response to Yuji asking if he was okay because he was acting "out of character" Gojo was certain that Sukuna would lose, but uncertain that he'd be the one to beat him. He was certain that if he dies one of his students would surpass him and finish the job. I think less satisfies fits here the most because the one difference between Sukuna and Gojo is that Gojo doesn't want the burden that comes with being the strongest, while Sukuna completely embarrassed the loneliness, Gojo sought students he could teach to break the cycle.
Even freaking bastillon in overwatch !!!
Bro please please please give us your opinion on the anime Vivy: Flourite Eye's Song and the game Detroit Become Human. Could possibly be a part 2 or follow up to this video. P. S You are so underrated, been a fan since the first vid, let's help get mans to guys 100K ❤
