  • Alaskan Malamutes can make great family pets. They arr known for their loyalty, affection, and love for human companionship. However, they are large, strong dogs that require plenty of exercise and space. They have a thick double coat that sheds heavily, requiring regular grooming. Proper training and socialization are very important from a young age to ensure they are well-behaved around family members and other pets.
    Here are some pros and cons to consider:
    Pros:
    * Loyal and affectionate with their family
    * Intelligent and trainable
    * Active and playful, making them great companions for families with children
    * Their thick coats make them well-suited for colder climates
    Cons:
    * Require regular exercise and mental stimulation to prevent boredom and behavioral issues
    * Need proper training and socialization from an early age to ensure good behavior around people and other animals
    * Can be independent and stubborn at times, making training challenging
    * Their thick coats shed heavily, requiring regular grooming
    * May not be suitable for small living spaces or apartments due to their size and energy level
    Overall, Alaskan Malamutes can make great family pets for active families who are willing to provide the necessary care and attention. However, it's important to carefully consider your family's lifestyle and whether a Malamute is the right fit for you before bringing one home.

    I had a Malamute for ten years, and he was a wonderful friend to everyone. You need to train them, as they test their alpha, and (s)he must earn and hold their respect.

      For sure, you need to be a strong “pack” leader or they’ll run rings around you and cause no end of havoc (understatement). Will you have another mal companion in the future? They are amazing dogs and each and every one I have had since my first in 1990; some 34 yrs ago; has made an impact on me. Once I was bitten; pardon the pun; life is meaningless without them.

      @@LivingWithMalamutes@LivingWithMalamutes Yes, we want a male Alaskan Malamute.
      It is my hope we'll be able to buy both a male Alaskan Malamute and a male American Akita at the same time. I want them as close in age as possible (same day or week would be fantastic).?
