    I rode dirt bikes and four wheelers most of my life. As a lady rider, I started off on a Yamaha SR185 exciter.... nothing exciting about it but very light and easy to handle. We bought it for $200 from my husbands buddy. Rode this for 1-2 weeks and remembering where everything was came back quickly. Next I went to the gsxr 750. Very fun bike and loved to ride it, just uncomfortable for a girl at 5’7”. Didn’t want to ride the sport bike anymore so I rode my husbands harley heritage. Then I purchased my second bike that is an 883. Love my new bike! And also love the fact that I have options on riding the heritage or my 883. 😍😍😍😍 nothing like getting the wind in your hair and singing “born free” by kid rock. Lol the neighbor apparently seen me doing this and I seen them at the gas station and she said love the new bike, and that you sing 😂. Kinda embarrassing that people can hear me singing but they know I’m in love with riding.

    I couldn't watch this whole video. The guy gives the poorest instruction, and I can't believe he let a first-timer on the bike with inappropriate gear. I hope you both got proper instruction by now. Riding is one of the funnest things, but you have to know how to do it right so you can be safe and continue having fun!

      @JulieCastro  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Very true! He has his license and took a class but I have not! Trust me I would never go on the road without one.

    • @LimitedSpectrum
      @LimitedSpectrum 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Do you plan on taking the class soon? I did it back when I got my first bike in 2005, and it's the best thing you can do! If you pass the CMSP class, then you can get your license without the riding test, only written.That's pretty handy. I used to practice the drills I learned from that class about once a month to stay sharp. People would make fun of me a little bit for setting up little orange cones in the Vons parking lot and doing all these silly little things, but it's such a great feeling when you can make a U-turn inside of one lane on a Harley!
      But... I moved to L.A. 2 years ago, and my bike is being stored in my dad's garage 300 miles away!

    Down voted for not securing helmet. Takes 1 second and a new rider should practice that anyway. Very easy to drop the clutch and shoot off.

      Try an armored vest instead, something like the Forcefield armored vests (I'm told to stay away Icon vests) and some elbow and knee guards that she can wear over her clothes.
      A good pair of aramid lined pants would probably be advisable and some armored gloves that have padding on the palms.
      A full face snell rated helmet should probably mandatory since the DOT rating seems to be just BS and all it's good for is to meet the legal requirements.

    First thing is to get used to the weight by handling it. Get on and learn the clutch lever, throttle, brake rear, brake front. Use the rear brake first all slow speeds no more than ten MPH. Remember to put your left foot out to hold up the bike before you stop. Remember that the rear brake is the first to apply then the front. Ride it by easing out the clutch. If the throttle is set a little high, it will help. Do this in a straight line forward by easing out clutch then pull it in while reducing throttle then apply brake... do this over and over until you feel comfortable.

    Just a little help: the clutch connects the engine to the transmission. Any time you press the clutch, the engine disconnects from the transmission. That is used to stop the vehicle or to change gears. I wish I could have learned in a HD. I learned in a Honda GC150 Titan (Brazilian).

      I took the safety riding course with my husband and totally recommend it. You’ll learn a lot.. Purchased my first bike last February Harley 883 then in June upgraded to Heritage. It’s a lot of fun when you ride your own bike instead of being passenger 👍🏼👍🏼

    • @BiZinatChos
      @BiZinatChos 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Mari, I'm just curious. From only driving a car to the point of getting to ride your own motorcycle, what did you go through training-wise? Instructed riding, courses, exams? Just a safety riding course? I'm from Norway and curious about how it actually works for a normal person when it comes to getting to ride a motorcycle.

  • @craigcloud2556
    @craigcloud2556 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Don’t use any throttle.
    Walk the turns
    Feather clutch on straights only
    Repeat until a little more comfortable then do turns on clutch.
    Then start using throttle when comfortable moving on clutch alone.
    Keep front wheel straight when applying brake, but mostly squeeze clutch to stop moving when u feel you’re starting to accelerate. As opposed to using brake when its a little late.
    In other words, try regulating your speed rather than having to use brake because you’re going too fast for your skill level.

    I'd suggest much more verbal instruction on clutch and brake use. How to stop using the brakes in concert with each other since the front brake accounts for approximately 70% of stopping. How to shift up and down and use of gearing for engine braking. Most important... Counter steering# An 883 Sportster is a good starter bike since the power isn't overwhelming and its pretty light. I think she did pretty well since the on camera instruction was sparse. She should take an MSF course.

    Ok, I am a new "old " rider. I have driven dirt bikes BACK in the day as a kid and rode a buddies Street Bike back as a young Marine.
    Starting out - using the clutch and proper gear.,,some people think they have to be perfect in. when in theory all you need to do is find the friction zone in clutch,..slowly let the clutch out until you reach this point, .now your almost ready,..this time try and put both feet on the ground - find friction zone in clutch, slowly let it out but try and resistt the bike from moving forward until you can t hold it any longer and slowly give it gas- if ever gets away from you.simply pull the clutch in and let off the throttle....and continue doing this drill. maintain rpm s little above idle, and freather out the clutch,..not all the way yet,..just keep easi'n out.and back in...oh if you death grab the brake,..it will fall/leaning. And get away from that cement column garage. Get one foot- right foot up on pegs until complete stop,..if both feet are off pegs and you hit throttle, you wont be able to ease off because you'll be Superman flying - bike is pulling hard away from you and your hand is holding you on the bike and feet dangle=ing behind you with no way to ease off- so keep feet/foot on pegs. "find friction zone in clutch, and your rpms' -gas should be reved just a bit and maintain the as you let clutch out then back in,...

    Julie, you rode well. Try to ride in different roads like quiet streets, and then slowly get into busier streets and eventually the freeway but after getting enough practice, confidence and school to ride the bike. You have the confidence and just need to practice more to get to know your bike and feel more comfortable.

    Your pretty brave. There is a fair amount of coordination to learn & balance riding a bike. I did ride a Ninja 250 to learn on and about 2 years later sold it. 8 years later I just got a Harley "Fatboy" & holy crap, it's like day & night. The weight & low stance really caught me by surprise, have to learn how to ride all over again.

    I think to many people starts on way to big of a machine best to start riding is a 50cc to 100cc for quite awhile. until you built a lot of confidence.
    I known quite a few customers that even got hurt or killed by 50cc bikes.
    then progress to 250 to 500cc.
    And in reality it's stupid having a bike bigger then 1200cc.
    in most cases a 400 to 800 is plenty big enough and powerfull enough to get you cruising down the highway.
    I myself went down to a 1000cc for my chopper and 650 with a sidecar and have a lot more fun with it then my 1400 cruiser to heavy.
    I felt like if I was driving my 35 ft. school bus.

    A lot of people die every year because they make stupid mistakes on motorcycles. Last year, I watched a guy make a fatal mistake combining a bad decision (pass a stopping toy-hauler without knowing what was in front of it), excessive speed, SUV in front of toy-hauler made a perfectly legal left turn into his ranch driveway, biker laid down his bike which them flipped him into the side of the SUV-and the bike smashed into the biker-instant death. When I started chest comprehensions I found out the biker had a flail chest, arms and legs pretzeled, but he did wear a helmet, and that didn't save him.
    The point is that bad decisions and riding do not go hand-in-hand. Take a basic class, then an intermediate class, and finally, an advanced class taught by police motor cop(s). Also, those boots look great, but they should never be worn on a bike except as a pillion.
    Stupid mistakes will kill or maim you, proper gear MIGHT save you. Excessive speed and/or inattentiveness are the primary causes of bike accidents.

    That was a great way to show her how to start riding. I would not have put her in a situation where she needed to actually turn the motorcycle until a later time. Newbies don't know that if they press the brake on a turn, they will go down and you should know that. She did GREAT! She should definitely keep learning from you. Just keep her on the straightaways for a bit longer. It was a valuable mistake she made though. Better to tip the bike over going 3 miles per hour than going 60 mph. Lesson learned: don't press on your front brake when your wheel isn't straight. Great job to you both!

    Good job, my first bike I ever rode and it was also the one I learned on was a softail heritage HD. I loved it and couldn't wait to get my own. My ole man got me a new sportster for my first and I'm mot a fan, I'm trading in on softail. Love It! Yea you really should wear proper shoes, I have a massive boot collection. Lol

      SINEMATIC any of the Harley brand engineer type, or lace up type with flat heels. My favorite are my Durango Tuscan leather bootie it's flat heeled and has great traction for those times when you need control and sure footing. The only time I really wear heels is when I'm not riding my own and I'm on the back of my ole man's bike. You know for looks not function. Also take a safety course class it really teaches you so much and gets you ready for the road. Good riding.

    Hi i might be late but just wanted to add an advice.. learn to ride in an open area and if youre learning always keep your hand on the clutch that way the bike doesnt go anywhere when you press it. Watch Do it With Dans video where he teaches that.

  • @Araris
    @Araris 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Unless there was a ton of off-screen training/explaining, this was pretty dangerous for her, and the bike. When training someone to ride, the first thing you go over in detail is not stomping on the front break, then you make them do it a few times so they understand how quickly it stops. Next you train the friction zone. At any time here she could have hit the throttle by accident, panicked and sped herself into a wall. Need proof? check out tons and tons of people doing it on youtube. Careful! but good vid.

      A patient teacher, good basic technique, she did LEARN something here.
      And enjoyed having a good experience at her own rythm.
      She did FANTASTIC.
      Next time, she will be more confident and...
      Learn level II: turning.
      *** NEVER PULL THE FRONT BRAKE LEVER ***
      Level III: Shifting...
      The rest is a piece of cake ! And so fun. Enjoy !
      Pssstt: Julie, tell your boyfriend to give you his bike (perfect match for you) and now he has to GO BUY ANOTHER ONE ! 😁

    I love the iron 883's. I notice you removed the front fender... do you ever regret that? Does it kick road debris into your chin or anything? I kind of want to remove mine, but I dont know how impractical that would be.
    And hoenstly, I think it's great to share the joy of motorcycling with anyone. Putting around in a parking garage is perfectly fine. Yeah proper gear is better, better instruction is better but no one got hurt, but everyone had a good. Proper gear matters more when you're on the raod than it does now.

    • @JulieCastro
      @JulieCastro  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I asked him about the front fender and he removed it for aesthetic appeal. He said he does not really get any debris on the road other than water. He doesnt ride in the rain when he can help it, and he says he's cautious about going slow over any big puddles of water or it will definitely splash him. Other than that, he's very happy and has no regret from doing so! Thank you for asking! And yes, many people have asked about better shoes, and I am definitely looking at my options for boots without heels! Let me know of any brands of riding shoes/boots you have enjoyed! We'd love to hear your thoughts :)

    Gday sin, awesome to see your getting into riding, nice attempt at riding, you did well for your first time, ive raced dirt bikes for years "motorcross" and done heaps of enduro for way more years,
    safety first, wear the correct gear "please" that bike is way too heavy for a beginner, learn the basics and keep any protective clothing on and forget about fashion, , a small "250cc" 4stroke road bike thats low to the ground is where you wanna start, once you learn balance ect, then you can move up in motorcycle size and weight " THIS MAY TAKE YEARS" it kinda annoys me your boyfriend dont know this already "i cant blame him tho" experience takes time for everyone, take your time, enjoy the experience, and dont rush the learning curve, keep safe and enjoy!!!!!!!!!
