    On "My Car Story" we're at the Carlisle Events in Carlisle PA at the Ford Nationals on 6-1-19.
    We're looking at a 1953 Mercury Monterey Convertible in BlackPaint and White Top. The car features the factory V8 engine.
    The car's Owner is Ed & Evelyn Miller. Ed’s had this car since 1985. He shares he used to pick up Evelyn to go on dates in a car just like this one. After a 5 year search he found another one. Now when they take the car out, she sits right next to him just like when they were dating.

    Another great example of Americana history. Great attention to details such as the door handles, Mercury logos, fender chrome, all the goodies. And what a great couple who drive their own piece of American history. Thanks Lou! What a great find!

    Same car Lucy and Desi had in their 1954 movie The Long, Long Trailer except theirs was yellow with a black convertible top. Beautiful car!!

    • @chuckster3629
      @chuckster3629 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      And it was amazing they used that car with it's relatively puny engine (by today's standards) to tow that long, long trailer. The flathead V-8 only had 255 c.i. and 125 h.p., but it had a lot of low end torque. I'm sure it really struggled going up mountain passes with that gigantic trailer.

    • @sexysagi
      @sexysagi 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      But if you really looked at the scene where they were climbing the steep mountain, it was a Lincoln Capri convertible with a more powerful V8 engine pulling the trailer, but by the cars looking so similar , you wouldn't notice unless you really paid attention

    • @biscuit1977
      @biscuit1977 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      If you watch the movie again, you will see that most close ups were mercury, but a yellow 1953 205 hp OHV Lincoln was towing. Just a few quick shots of the gold V on the grill. We had one and so we noticed it right away.

    • @chuckster3629
      @chuckster3629 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@biscuit1977
      Yes, and even a "whopping" 205 hp OHV engine would have struggled with that big, heavy trailer full of full size furniture and other belongings.

    My first car was a '52 Merc in metallic green. It had a rag stuffed in the engine air vent but when I took it out it would smoke profusely especially going up ill. I always had to carry a jug of cold water because the fuel pump behind the carb would get hot and form an air lock cutting fuel to the engine. A little splash solved this problem. I wish I could have a car like this today, but the computer people have ruined everything.

    I had one like this, years ago, main difference was all red interior, Merc-O-Matic trans and northern California is so hot in summer, add-on a/c. Lucille Ball and Desi Arnez had a yellow one in "The Long Long Trailer", except climbing steep mountains it turned into a altered 1953 Lincoln convertible for the climb.

    • @jwelchon2416
      @jwelchon2416 5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Ha Ha...I had forgotten that. I read somewhere they had to use a Lincoln because it had the more powerful overhead valve engine. The flathead in the Merc just didn't have enough grunt.

      The 1957, '58, '63, '64, '65, '66 Mercurys with reverse slant roofs had opening back windows, as did the 1958, 59, and '60 Continental's, even the convertible on those, the 1967-68 Mercury's with regular roof had a rear window available that opened a few inches.

    The '52-'54 era of the automobile was always somewhat of a lost period to collectors, but I always loved them! They had a very compact solid and elegant look about them. They were truly modern for what came just before. This '53 Mercury in black is a great example of these beautiful cars. I heard that the old flathead V-8 was really perfected by it's finale in '53. A great car and a great engine.

    It's interesting that Mercury carried over that 1940's body design for the rear quarter to give it a subtle add-on fender . The 1949 FORD was designed to shake off that pre-WW2 jelly bean fender look with the tapered hood from the cowl to the grill , but somehow Mercury pulled it off to keep the lower rear portion of the fender to be a retro-look and cruiser .
    The Monterey kept that bulge up to 1956 .
