A year and a half ago the painter at my job was out on vacation and we had a job that absolutely had to go that Friday. I told my boss I can paint it, I've been watching how to paint videos on TH-cam. He scoffed at me and said oh this is gonna be good. I did such a good job on that hood bumper Fender blend that he asked me if I wanted to come in Saturday hey and do a full paint job on a Bronco that the painter had been dreading and I agreed ...that Bronco left that Tuesday without being polished . A few months later I replaced the painter. You gave me the confidence to step my game up and it changed my life . Thank you for that.

If there's anything I am greatly thankful for its for Brian teaching us the craft and showing us the way through his journey in the auto body industry. Ty for being a big fan, sometimes we catch a break and I am hoping eventually you can as well. You don't always have to sweep floors in a shop to get a break, why waste time? Wishing you many successes!
Thanks for the inspiration. I painted my old 4Runner in my driveway and it was going well until a bird targeted the door. I had a canopy covering my work area and wrapped plastic around two sides but birds have great aim. Now I know what I have to do to fix it. Thanks for keeping me from giving up. 👍
amazing video. im a prepper and i am working hard and taking the chances they give me to paint. i was so moved by this video. you are a great man, such an inspiration to me.
There was a lot of knowledge packed into this video, thanks for sharing it with all of us. I've definitely had my fair share of frustrating moments in the booth but it makes it all worth it in the end. I had a similar start, I don't have any certifications or trainings, just a lot of long nights lol. I always tell our newer guys when they start that the only reason I've gotten proficient with cutting and buffing was because I had a humbling start as a painter, and I still get humbled because I'm not perfect and that's perfectly fine. During that time, your videos on here are what I can attribute to that success. Every night whether it was successful or not, I would watch and even sometimes rewatch your videos. I had no idea even about overlapping with spray patterns before I started watching you on here. You've taught me a ton, thank you!
Brian, you have a lot of great experience and you make fantastic inspirational videos. The young people of today have have such an advantage with U Tube. I’m 59 next month and I started painting cars in 1983 and the only way to learn ( or so I thought ) was from how to articles in hot rod and car craft magazine and the learning curve was so difficult, if you got into the business a lot of guys would not share, there knowledge they were protecting their jobs by watching you fail miserably. it was hard to better yourself. But with training from you a young person can surpass the ignorant old timer that doesn’t care if the business succeeds or fails. You a good man that has helped a lot of young people, keep up the good work.
Just learned how to blend clear, thanks! there are not a lot of videos showing how to use melt in blender. I've painted at least 5 cars and every single one I have to redo something, but I have learned so much with professional results, thanks to people like you sharing your knowledge.

You have the benefit of a mixing station. As a garage painter I can't just mix some yellow tinter . It requires me to drive 30 minutes to the paint store. I'm not rral good with spray out cards. To me, they sometimes are very deceiving when it's in the garage all taped up and ready for paint. But, I do appreciate your attitude and the knowledge you share
Hello Brian...great video friend... usually I don't have problems with my paint jobs...The big problem for me is that i do every job alone...i work 12 hours every day...years....my hands,my knees my back is pain....I am tired of this situation and thats i tell my self everyday"I don't to work anymore".... We have serious problem in my county to find people to work on this job ..Very difficult but i am still here.....
Man Brian I really appreciate all your videos but this one in particular because it's all TRUTH here man. I sprayed for three years at a friend's shop. His painter walked out one day in the middle of an "off frame restoration" of a 65' C-10 short bed. Red with white center line outlined with brushed aluminum trim that covered the paint lines. Anyway I had never painted anything since my Schwinn bicycle when I was 9. But he showed me how to mix paint (completely wrong) and let me cut loose on this truck. Two and a half years later the gentleman that paid almost 15 grand for that paint wanted me to paint two more of his trucks. A respray of clear on a daily driver and another restoration, a 55' I believe, stuff happened nothing bad on my part but I ended up not taking the jobs along with 4 other jobs coming my way out of the surrounding business owners near my friends shop. It's a long story of course but I had had enough, but I still watch your videos and may rethink it. Supposed to start CDL training on Oct. 21st so time will have to tell. Either way once I land on my feet I will be restoring vehicles, its a lot of fun in the end.
I did a lot of painting of 500 gal. Totes in the 90s using enamel, I have been planning on painting my Cobra kit car for 2 yrs. But im not to that point yet , but on july 1st of this year I wrecked my work truck so i put the new hood and grill on it and painted it, it turned out great and I credit that to you Brian, I have ben watching your videos for 2 yrs and learned a lot from you about painting basecoat clearcoat which i had never done, so thank you very much!
I've had those same thoughts. In fact, as mechanic that becomes a painter, I had wanted to give up many times as mechanic, but like you said, you need more time. Lord knows I'm not the greatest mechanic alive, but I have gotten to the point to where I do pretty well. The most is learned patience. If I do have short comings, I can deal with them better than I could before I made as many mistakes. Good luck my friend.
Just finished my 1st paint job, was frustrating AF. Had a new Gun to put the clear down, it had a bad pressure gauge and leaked, I figured out the gauge while testing the pattern, but only noticed the leak when the gun was tilted over the hood and dropped a glob of clear, I thought I may have tilted the gun too much and continued. Ended up with several globs and the usual orange peel of a 1st effort. A lot of wet sanding is in my future.
This is as accurate as it gets! I’ve been there many times, and it takes a lot of willpower to persevere through it. Just remember no matter how bad a job comes out, no matter what you have to do to make a job right…you’ve learned and you’re that much better than you were before. Many of the jobs that I have messed up have been on my own cars; when that happens there’s no one to blame but yourself. I’ve spent thousands of hours blocking a car out to perfectly straight only to have the foundation fail a few years later😩😣! You know what though… taking that entire area back to bare metal, treating the rust that developed underneath(creating the bubbles that caused the failure) and doing the entire process over..went much faster than it did the first time-you know why?? Because I’m better now than I was then! DONT QUIT❤
I've said I was done for the last 2 years after getting burned out painting cars from hurricane Ian. Fast forward to 3 weeks ago and the dealership I painted at closed the body shop. The job market where I live is non-existent right now. Moral of the story is you never know how good you have it until it's gone.
Great stuff Brian I’ve been there before and I’m just getting out of that rut again. Thanks for the encouragement Brother . I’ve been professional painting since 1993 . And I’ve been at the same dealership for 21yrs now .
Thank you for all those videos. I just painted my first car on my own improvised spraying booth and came up pretty decent. I had some runs I'll have to fix them. But in general, i feel very confident to do it again. And all that thanks to the effort you put on those videos and show us how to. So I'll keep following close and keep learning. Maybe, one day , i can get a good paint job like the ones you do. Any way like you say, it's just paint
It's gonna sound crazy but my one paint vendor started to supply "Frog tape" but not the stuff you see at lowes. I was having problems with the 3M yellow tape as well and the green wasn't any better honestly, just more expensive. The tape my vendor sent me is Yellow frog tape or gold whatever they want to call it, it's yellow but on the box it says gold. It's about $50 cheaper a case than 3M and I got better results with it, even on high end jobs and I'm not one for cheap tape I like the best tape money can buy but for whatever reason this stuff just works and it's more affordable. Hope this helps! Nice work and looking forward to your next video.
You know I have no official training from a school but I was trained by two painters with combined 70 years experience. I’ve learned a lot but have a lot to learn. I agree you will mess up everyday on every job. Rare is it that you have one with no dirt to sand out before the last coat of base or whatever else. I’ve never felt that I want to leave the trade. Just that I have a love and hate relationship with boats but a passion for cars.
Brian. I’m in my early 70’s and discovered your channel about two years ago when I bought a 2015 Toyota. It had some paint damage on the front bumper cover, hood, left fender and left door. Not collision damage but chemical I suppose. I’ve repainted it several times and stripped it each time. The car is silver and I manage to make mistakes every time. The point I’m trying to make is that, even with your great advice, I still need some more practice and I became frustrated with it and haven’t done anything with it 13:07 in about 6 months. The expense is obviously much more than having it done but I’ve learned a lot. After seeing this video I feel better and more inspired to get back out there. Thank you for this offer of encouragement. Please keep doing these great videos!
Im 22 years doing this professionally. There is ALWAYS goin to be a car that will break your nuts. Sometimes during the repairs, sometimes matching colours, sometimes blends. Some days i wanted to burn the booth. It happens to everyone! Main thing is dont bring the bad vibe home. Leave it in the shop. Whatever the problem it can always be fixed. Chin up.
Thank you for this! I do not paint but same things apply to car detailing, I have been doing detailing for a little over a year and have had many moments when things just don't go as planned, but like you said, you just have to go through it and learn from your mistakes/hard times!
(ASE Certified back in 2000) Taking care not to overpour toners is important. Especially white. My opinion white is the hardest to match even for blending. Slower is sometimes faster in the end. DuPont has the VINdicator system for finding the right variant from using the VIN number. I had awesome results on first mixes with NO spray-out panels. I'm working as a collision tech, now for the past 5 years or so, Haven't painted but one job in 2 years, but it's like riding a bike.
You're a great man Brian! Inspired me and so many people and teaching us so much not only about this profession but about life aswell, keep doing what you love! I cant thank you enough for all the knowledge you have shared here, but i like to think that at the end of the day you come back home with a smile!
Yep been there I walked away from it for years , but guess what , I am back ! I missed it so I ve got back in it and it’s just like riding a 🚴 bike! lol 😂 but I pick up tips from my channels I watch and yes you are one of them ! Keep up the great work ! Jason from B&S restoration
Good stuff…it literally felt like you were talking to me personally I’ve been doing this about three years now at home I’ve come along way thanks to you. Keep doing what you do Brian thanks for keeping it 💯
Great Video! I love seeing the real world issues and challenges. I thought these colors were just out for me. Appreciate the consistent uploads. Don't forget to take a break!
I'm living this right now spraying this RSX, I've been struggling with Sealer, had to sand it all back down because it was spraying texture on the panels, I think I need to over-reduce it, no matter how much I stir out of the can it's still thick n clumpy, I moved brands thinking it was the brand but getting the same issue, a video on getting the consistency/viscosity or whatever would be super helpful, now that the sealer is sanded down I'm just going with color and move on but man I've learned a lot from this experience, can't tell you how many times I wanted to quit..
Yeah everytime brian, everytime i start painting im thinking to give up. Especially all those sanding, sanding and preparation for painting. However after the painting is done and the outcome looks great, i tell myself im not gonna quit again.😂haha
Crazy coincidence Brian, I had asked you in last week’s video about some contour mapping that occurred when I sprayed clear over a metallic silver. I had trouble sleeping all weekend waiting to go back into class to see. Your advice was sound the mapping was easily buffed out. The blend and silver match was perfect, but then I painted the bumpers … When I applied the sealer it was a little heavy and caused excessive orange peel. So when I painted the base and clear it’s showing bad. I am very upset with myself because I am capable of doing better and I know I can. Right now I am trying to talk the instructor into letting me redo it because it’s the dean of the colleges car and I am unhappy with how it looks. I am glad this video hit on some solid points. You’re a true professional and I appreciate all of your advice.
Yup! And honestly, sometimes we don’t feel good until we redo the job, I’ll actually lose sleep at night probably like you did thinking about a job that needs to get redone so I’m right there with you
Great video you nailed that, this really resonated with me, this job isn't easy and it can be soul destroying when things don't go as you planned and it's a very time consuming job that can drain you mentally and physically . This is where i am atm, I'm exhausted and not getting the results that are satisfying me. That job look great thanks for this video its really helped hearing this

Great video and message! I live in Las Vegas we have dry weather here and that yellow tape won’t work for us either in the paint booth… green 3m is the way to go for us.
Excellent video Brian. Very well spoken. I can’t speak for everyone. But I’ve been down that road before. Hope you and your family are doing well after Helene.
When you starting to spray a car in the paint booth you just focus on your job, you don't one anything to disturb you, you cant answer a phone call, you just want your job done beautifuly, only painter will know how it feel. Thanks Brian.
Very motivational video. 6-20:00. It reminds me something.. but if only you could see the orange peel from the r500 today’s painting. Oh man I was ready to throw that gun to the trash can after painting
Busy painting my classic Honda glory red,job looked beautiful. Had a little paint left in the gun, thought I would use it up on the job. What ye reckon happened, BIG RUN
That is a big difference if you can tweak your paint color. I have there a few times, but I can't tweak the color. Maybe I will buy basic colors from my shop (like CMYK) to have. ❤
Brian, uk diyer here. I've learned so much from you, gunman and others....my silver wetbed blends are improving. I would like to ask advice about a wetbed issue? Most of you pros appear to apply the wet bed then go straight into applying the basecoat. When I followed this, the silver started to drag and at first had to wipe the entire job of with thinners and start again......yes I had had enough 😂 What seems to work for me is to apply a lighter clearbase, the allow about 15+ mins, then 'mist coat' the silver on. Are you pros getting away with it because of the booth temp? Any advice welcomed.
Honestly, I stopped using blender as a wet bed and only put it on my sealer edge to smooth it out, if you use the slowest temp reducer and over reducer base a little bit, it works better
Iv bin spuin i can't get that 3m yellow tape from my supplier any more i love it. But man nothing beats painting im a mechanic and learnt how to paint from The Gunman in my 30s. Its easy really only time you get caught out is when you use or try something different 😅 find good paint you can use and stick with, of it ain't broke don't fix as they say 👍
Painting sucks… anyone who’s painted anything is a critic and no one wants to pay for the skill I have…and the worst is painters don’t realize most people don’t see what you see…
i had enough when a bug or 5 landed in my second or first clearcoat for the 8th time. Had to redo the whole thing several times. And I did NOT know that you cannot touch up with basecoat when you break through the clear. I wish I knew ... would have saved me a lot of trouble. Maybe an idea for a future video. how to fix those kind of mistakes. I did paint in a homemade booth - but even though the bugs found their way in.....
Question: how many ounces to paint a full car? Id like to try my hand at painting my 05 TL, making a list of all the costs. Is a 96. Fl oz enough for full coverage, 3 coats?
A year and a half ago the painter at my job was out on vacation and we had a job that absolutely had to go that Friday. Because I’m better now than I was then! DONT QUIT❤
Real talk, my friend 💪💪
Ty bro for watching this
@@PaintSociety always got your back
I've said I was done for the last 2 years after getting burned out painting cars from hurricane Ian. Fast forward to 3 weeks ago and the dealership I painted at closed the body shop. The job market where I live is non-existent right now. Moral of the story is you never know how good you have it until it's gone.
Thats insane man. Sorry to hear about the shop
Awesome comment Mark. Ty!
Chin up.
Very true statement. Most of the time it's starts with metal and bodywork frustration frustration
this is why i subscribed .....he is real and says real shit ...much love and respect for being real
Ty bro!
Love the vids broski. Thanks for sharing your knowledge.
Ty for always being a fan !
Thank you for this! I do not paint but same things apply to car detailing, I have been doing detailing for a little over a year and have had many moments when things just don't go as planned, but like you said, you just have to go through it and learn from your mistakes/hard times!
As a painter to a painter I really needed that bro
Thanks Brian! Great words of advice, not only for spraying, but for life generally. 👍
Yup! That's what it is all about, we all going through similar situations.
You couldnt have said it better! White is super sensitive
@@PaintSociety ;)
Beautiful finish. But even better speech! Good job Brian
Thank your Brian your words mean a lot man . Stay blessed 🙏🏽🏆
Things got real. Appreciate the raw.
Felt good! Ty for watching

Good stuff…it literally felt like you were talking to me personally I’ve been doing this about three years now at home I’ve come along way thanks to you. Keep doing what you do Brian thanks for keeping it 💯
awesome and even at home you can knock out nice jobs, you don't need a pro setup, ty for being a fan!
Now this is an inspirational video! Thank you for your time 🙏🏼
Good talk!
My clear gun is a rp3000 1.2
Your iwata sounds a lot like it.
Thanks for the vids!
What was said in this video was perfect 👌
Ty Nick!
Great Video! I love seeing the real world issues and challenges. I thought these colors were just out for me. Appreciate the consistent uploads. Don't forget to take a break!
The Master teaching us Students… luv the encouragement ❤
Such a great person and a great painter. Appreciate the motivation brother
I appreciate that
Iv had jobs iv had to redo 3-4 times.
This can be a very frustrating.
Not for the weak
Thanks for showing this Brian !
hell yea bro, my record is 9 times lol
@@PaintSociety omg LOL hey it happens!!!!
A true educator, Brian! Thank you
Come from a family of educators, it is in the blood!
I really appreciate the encouragement you give in the video!
You are so welcome!
Yeah everytime brian, everytime i start painting im thinking to give up. Especially all those sanding, sanding and preparation for painting. However after the painting is done and the outcome looks great, i tell myself im not gonna quit again.😂haha
I want to be like you .Your painting is very creative and freedom sir.
That job look great thanks for this video its really helped hearing this
don't give in! how many times have we felt defeated? It is the feeling of accomplishing a great jobs after all those failures that is the true WIN!, ty for the comment
@@PaintSociety Thank you 🙏 that’s so true when you overcome issues the feeling of accomplishment is so good and we really have to think outside the box with this job , if we don’t make mistakes or face hardships we don’t grow and progress….Fact
Have a blessed rest of the week man god bless you and your channel 🙏
great stuff, I appreciate you sharing your honest insights
You are the best teacher we could have
Very thankful for all the content really help me personally a lot
Well last night i had enough and i stoped at the base.. was spraying ford color UH and everything was fine lay my last hand of base and boom tiger stripes... After the last ruff days with late working over and over again i said fuck it will take a break and do it tomorrow.. This morning am so hyped and ready to own this job like never before
P.s Spraying cars for about ~3 years now not much of experience but i look others a lot always reading about out job when i have time and aiming to improve every minute possible
you did the right thing, some folks have a tough time just stopping, we always want those instant results! Hit it up in the morning, the work will still be there!
Great video and message! I live in Las Vegas we have dry weather here and that yellow tape won’t work for us either in the paint booth… green 3m is the way to go for us.
Thanks for sharing!
Excellent video Brian. Very well spoken. I can’t speak for everyone. But I’ve been down that road before. Hope you and your family are doing well after Helene.
Hi Jim. Doing great down here. Only a few tree branches down. Where are you from Jim
Chicago. I go to Florida yearly. We will definitely get together. Take care Brian.
When you starting to spray a car in the paint booth you just focus on your job, you don't one anything to disturb you, you cant answer a phone call, you just want your job done beautifuly, only painter will know how it feel. Thanks Brian.
Same Brother, thank you for sharing.
Brian, that gun cabinet is worth thousands!
And how funny, just keep going back to the same guns.
I truly appreciate your videos
I appreciate all you shared. Taught me a ton.. Thanks Brian 👍
Ty ken !
Very motivational video. 6-20:00. It reminds me something.. but if only you could see the orange peel from the r500 today’s painting. Oh man I was ready to throw that gun to the trash can after painting
that some hart on the sleeve video there mate,!! YOU can here it in your voice 👍👍👍👍
Excellent philosophy!!!!! You are right!!
Busy painting my classic Honda glory red,job looked beautiful.
Had a little paint left in the gun, thought I would use it up on the job.
What ye reckon happened, BIG RUN
Yup. Never give up!
My Devilbiss pro lite with a1.3 and T110 at 28 PSI lays a very flat very atomized finish!
Brian get a two step kitchen ladder with the hoop to lean on. This will up your reach greatly while keeping you out of the paint.
I needed to hear this today thank u
Painted a jeep PE4 in sikkenz today, lets say it was 10 hours in the booth for 4 doors and a hood.... They paint rep was called.
That is a big difference if you can tweak your paint color. I have there a few times, but I can't tweak the color.
Maybe I will buy basic colors from my shop (like CMYK) to have.
❤
That's a good idea!
I really like the teal color American tape.
I want to attempt to paint two of my own cars but I’m honestly afraid and overwhelmed by it all
very genuine.. hardly get this advice from anyone today, all are selfish...
it is from the heart =)
Sem has a green tape we've been trying and it sticks better out here in lower Al humidity which is basically a blanket of water you wear daily hahaha.
haha! right!!
I'm opposite of u Brian, certified auto bodyman, then 4 yrs college and IT Specialist Federal Gov but still paint with DV1 and now DFT my friend
Brian, uk diyer here. I've learned so much from you, gunman and others....my silver wetbed blends are improving. I would like to ask advice about a wetbed issue?
Most of you pros appear to apply the wet bed then go straight into applying the basecoat. When I followed this, the silver started to drag and at first had to wipe the entire job of with thinners and start again......yes I had had enough 😂
What seems to work for me is to apply a lighter clearbase, the allow about 15+ mins, then 'mist coat' the silver on.
Are you pros getting away with it because of the booth temp?
Any advice welcomed.
Honestly, I stopped using blender as a wet bed and only put it on my sealer edge to smooth it out, if you use the slowest temp reducer and over reducer base a little bit, it works better
@PaintSociety thanks for taking the time to reply - I'm sure we'd all like to see how you blend now without a wetbed
Good job I like your work process..
great inspirational video
Would love to see a two colour paint job. Do you re-use the maskings??
About 3 sense I started about a 1 ago. Dial in my guns. To dry, splatters, etc
gotta love that!
Nice job I love it
Hi Brian. I have Iwata 2 as well. How come you choose to shoot at 26psi? For hoods wouldn't u wanna bump it up to 29psi? Thanks mate
Question: how many ounces to paint a full car? Id like to try my hand at painting my 05 TL, making a list of all the costs. Is a 96. Fl oz enough for full coverage, 3 coats?
I have a video on this. Basically about 4-5 ounces per panel per material
