Hey Sam! Just a couple of tips for driving Tornado to get the best out of her: 1) Don't forget to put the train brake in "running" after the brakes are released. Lot's of new drivers forget to do this. Putting the brakes in running preserves steam and helps the engine run more efficiently, leaving more steam available for pulling the train. "Running" is normally just below "Released". Not all steam locos have a "running" position, so take note of the particular loco you're driving. 2) This is an old *old* model for Train Simulator, coming from around 2012-2013, meaning it isn't quite as realistic as more contemporary locomotives which have their physics and other functions like wheelslip augmented by fancy lua scripting. This affects the blower. In real life the blower creates an artificial draft to help the fire continue to burn bright and hot when the loco is either at a standstill in a station or at a signal and helps maintain the draft when the loco is going through a tunnel to prevent the fire from being blown back into the cab through the firebox. Normally the blower is closed when the loco is at speed as the increased draft can cool the fire and hamper steam production. Modern modelers have figured out how to recreate this behavior with lua scripting, but back in the old days before modelers starting using lua to recreate different effects on steam locos the blower could be left fully open at all times and at all speeds to produce loads of steam. In fact, in order to get the best performance out of old TS locomotives from 2012-2013 you *had* to open the blower to get the max amount of steam production out of the boiler. It was unrealistic, but it's what we did. Don't forget to check for the damper as well. 3) The ideal firemass for the A1 is around 79-80% on the F4 HUD. Keeping the firemass around there will ensure high steam production. Below or above that amount will cause steam production to drop off. 4) Leave the regulator as wide open as you can when you reach line speed. A full reg means high steam production in TS. Your cutoff was also a bit low for 50-60mph running. Remember that on the S&C from Carlisle you will be going uphill all the way to Garsdale which means you'll need to work the loco harder to maintain speed which means higher cutoff. Anything else I'd have to say (like get used to key commands and learn to use the F5 HUD) is just personal opinion. As a bonus: did you know that on Tornado you can push "B" and you'll hear a different whistle? Using the bell key sounds Tornado's higher-pitched bell whistle. I wish they would have used that whistle on the Flying Scotsman pack - much closer to the prototype than the whistle they used for the actual pack.
15:58 You are correct. That is a whistle, specifically a bell whistle. Tornado was built with 2 whistles, a chime whistle next to the smokebox and a bell whistle up by the cab. The positioning of the chime whistle isn't too unusual - the BR Britannias, Clans, and the Duke also had their whistles up by the smokebox. Don't know why, but they did. Maybe the deflectors helped move the whistle's steam up and away from the loco the same way they did the exhaust coming out the stack? 17:10 That other brake gauge here is for the air brake (non-functional at the time the loco came out due to technical limitations at the time). This has never been patched. You can ignore it. I don't know if the brake handle itself does anything. I always fully release it - just in case.
Cheers Sam, fascinating simulation to driving a steam engine. What amazes me is the lack of forward visibility, the long tank in front, plus all the wheels and levers that have to be operated. 👍🚂🚃🚃🚃🚅🚄🚉😁👍
Western lines of Scotland (port road) is one of my faves lots of shunting, freight and passenger opportunities to do and a fantastic model of a black 5 to boot
Hi Sam. I enjoyed your tornado tip. To keep your steam pressure up when driving, it is best to keep the firebox door closed as much as possible. The signal box near the end of your journey didn't look quite right. It Didn't have any windows on the line facing side. Unless I am wrong, all signal boxes have windows on the line facing side. Regards, Alan
I'd love to see you driving Dinmore Manor on the West Somerset Railway. In any case.... Train Sim Alert! Sam once caused a collision, upon a Train Sim Game. He was attempting this time to be a pro Signalman. This would prove disastrous with equally disastrous results. As always, Sam spent far too much time chatting to his viewers instead of concentrating on the task in hand. It would bring out the disaster-prone boy in him. Four trains had gone by on the right tracks, so far. Sam was too busy watching from the Signal Box window, and missed an important Bell Code. The Code was four rings, pause, four rings. The other Signalman was asking if the outside Up Line was clear, so as to accept a Goods Train into the section. Sam didn't hear it the first time, so the Code rang out louder in anger. Sam quickly answered back, but he'd forgotten that a local passenger train with a tank engine in front was fouling the points just outside the station. Oh dear. He was in trouble. "Oh no!" he cried. "I've let disaster creep up on me! What can I do?" Of course, there was nothing he could do. It was too late. The Goods Train, with a 9F upfront, came in at a moderate speed as it wasn't due to stop here. The Driver saw the tank engine at the last minute and.... CRASH! The whole scene shook violently under the impact. The two engines came off the track. Sam shrank back and ducked down. A loud explosion erupted, killing both footplate crews, Guards and the tank engine's passengers. The Railway Manager came along and gave Signalman Sam the sack. Sam was more careful to concentrate on what he was doing, when playing Train Sim Games, from then on. On the bright side, he was much better at driving a steam engine. Sam, next time you play Train Sim Games, do it in silence and concentrate on the task in hand. You'll fare much better, believe me.
Since its more likely big boy is not going to run on your layout than you might as well run big boy in game and yes there is a big boy module for train simulator.
