Thanks for all your hard work sweet Kate for bringing these treats to us. Please keep yourselves safe with the terrible fires again ravaging that province. 🥰🥰😉👵 Ottawa

    Greg heads up! On your forms for the footers take your hammer and tap the sides top to the bottom when you pour wet concrete and will get read of honey comm in the concrete while it's still wet and levels out as well . Just a tip from an old concrete man...

      Thanks. We had a drier mix so it didn’t slip out of the bottom of the wood form, just a little too dry I suppose

      Hey Greg !!! You said that you were triple laminate your 2x6 so I believe you would be hard pressed to get enough snow on the roof to really worry about 👍 Just a old dude from Pender Harbour BC 😎🇨🇦☮️

      Another way to eliminate honey comb is use your used motor oil to coat the inside of the form before you or the wet concrete

      @@ThisOffGridLifeuse a saw saw (reciripicated) saw without a blade on the shuttering and it will vibrate the honeycomb out and any air pockets in the concrete.

  • @goodwillcriminals117
    @goodwillcriminals117 26 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

    One trick for setting foundation pours better is to use a Sawzall without a blade as a vibrator tool to settle the concrete. And to answer your question, yes you did mix the concrete dry. You just need to read the bag ratio information.
    CAUTION: Since the ends of the posts are the open end of the grain you really need to seal the ends up. At the very least get some silicone caulk and spread it over the ends. I have used Zip tape as well in a pinch. There is also the potential for using scorching of the ends to seal them up...Lots of options and all will be an improvement.

    Greg, You might consider beefing up the beams in the section that is going to be a workshop. So that a chain fall hoist/trolly can be rigged up for maybe pulling an engine or lifting heavy items.

Milling your own lumber gives you a sense of ownership and accomplishment and PRIDE in your homestead and you two should be very very proud of all your hard work. Not to mention you haven't killed each other like most couples would lol. LORDY LORDY GREG IS ALMOST FORTY LMAO

    Use a SPAN TABLE to figure out what dimension of lumber to use when spanning a distance. It's based on several factors including what you are spanning (floor joist, ceiling joist, rafter, etc) and type of lumber (a critical factor) and other things. Use a Span Table for your area. You should be able to find one online. Just know this, the MAIN strength is in the height of the lumber, but of course the thickness and length of span are very important too.

    Hi Katie and Greg, it was sure nice being able to spend some time with you today. As usual, I enjoyed very much the random scenes with the animals at the start. I love the goats. I appreciate all the time and effort it takes for you to shoot, edit and produce these vids and really appreciate it. Thank you for putting in the effort with your editing Katie. I'm with Greg and would love to spend the day milling, especially with all the beautiful surroundings to enjoy and admire. I enjoyed watching Juniper and Aspen playing in that scene, they were having so much fun; like a couple of kids playing 😄 I am also ambidextrous Katie. I am old enough that they didn't have anything like left handed scissors etc back then and there didn't seem to be many left handed people in my world at least. So I had to learn how to do everything right handed and then adapt to left. I write left handed, use tools with either hand equally well, as well as shoot, bat etc. Greg, you made the comment about almost being 40, just give it another 35 years 😉 You got quite a bit accomplished and I look forward to the next vid. Have a productive week and be safe out there. Larry, Central Valley, Ca.

    It’s the one in 50 year fall of snow that’s the worry. Ask yourself, do you want to be awake at night worrying or sleep tight knowing you did a solid job? (… and yes, Australia does not get snow like Canada but we DO get snow loads in what we humorously call our alps!)
    2x8’s at least. In these times of global warming the average snow loading will probably decrease but the occasional peak loading will probably INCREASE! Love you guys! 🇦🇺 🦘🌏

    Mornin' Greg and Katie.....great work. If I'm allowed a suggestion, when pouring into forms, my dad taught me that, once poured, use a hand-held sander at the top of the forms to vibrate and settle the concrete. Keep working together.....it's an inspiration.

    My grandfather always said, use only that what you need and be sure you feel comfy by that. I think it would be fine to use 50x120mm wood or as you say 2x6Inch ;). i noticed in the old barn roof there are also had some triangle supports at every 4th or 5th beam.

    I've been following from the start and enjoy watching your build. Lots of comments about the span but I can't see anyone commenting about what's holding the building down. My concern is that with bit of wind uplift the entire barn could come of it's footings. Also agree with all the comments about putting a damp proof membrane under the posts to protect them from damp. Not too late to do it. Just jack them up and slide the material under.

    Greg, next time use as a bush solution, your reciprocating saw and let the body slightly vibrate the formwork. That will help compacting. Other tip: do not use osb board for formwork, the concrete sticks to it. You can make it from osb, but line it with some plastic. Also a bush solution

    Greg,about the select structure as opposed to 2btr ,the span's you are working with don't call for select even with the snow loads even with wind load and the live load of the metal roofing you can expect the laminated 2x6 to give you proper performance at 20 ft or less. Tripled up will allow for single fingered 45 braces at all changes in direction for diafram stability

    2x6 are pretty substantial for roofing....especially if you are using full dimension. The old building is a good guide to what you should use.......if you get an exceptionally heavy load, you can always brace with vertical posts during those heavy load snow events.

    Greg, your a beast, and Katie a beauty, when your doing laminated beams ensure you use a water proof glue and lots of it to double the strength of the beam. That is why plywood and osb has over 100 years of success, cause it makes a bond that doubles or triples the strength 😊

  • @GeekBatman
    @GeekBatman 26 วันที่ผ่านมา +3

    I might be wrong, but I believe you're planning on changing the overall layout by adding to the structure. If that is the case please consider this.
    It's not just snow load as such that you need to worry about. Depending on the final shape of your roof/building you might need to worry about snow drift.
    So rather than a typical angle of repose that would make the snow slide off the roof, the snow is able to pile up larger than it normally would. And therefore more weight.

    It looks like your plan, or lack of it, is coming together nicely. The goats are going to have a nice home soon. When this is done you will be able to move on to finishing the house and that will also be fun for us to watch.

    Hi Gregg
    If I understand correctly roof pitch plays a roll in span lumber sizing and loading.
    Another option is to copy exactly the existing structure because it’s still standing. Which means it works.

    Ohhh it’s going up! So proud of you two! Maybe put some more T-posts between for added security on the fence, especially where the predators are unable to see your activity and cutting the brush down or clearing the bottom branches off the trees inside the enclosure would deter the tearing through the fence, if they can see you and the dogs!

    5:01 I look at the darndest things when I watch TH-cam videos and all I can think about is his left boot is going to fill up with sawdust, and how nice must be to finally have forks. I know you've had them for a little bit, but I watched the struggle for the first few years when you guys were stacking lumber on the bucket.
