    And the gate keeping!

    Omg, I studied physics/nuclear engineering for two years and the culture was exactly the same! I got so discouraged because of it! Classmates were extremely unfriendly and elitist, teachers were always trying to make fun of you and kept saying "If you don't know this, you have no business being here". That school gave me so much anxiety, so I'm glad I quit but I also regret it, I was so passionate about physics but not at the cost of my mental health.

    Im 20 years old, a mexican girl who is waiting for her DACA approval, living in kansas, and I just started college since i've graduated highschool, I got into coding and am in a training program at my school and i'm the only woman, there is diversity in the males but no women. it's a big university too so it's insane to me that not one other girl was recruited or even joined. i was looking up tutorials on kali linux and i ended up on your video and im so happy i did!!! You said a lot of what i have been feeling, and i had no idea that what i was feeling was culture shock. You gave me so much advice and brought up a whole topic nobody around me has ever showed me because none of my friends know what im even doing and the people i work with are all men. Thank you for your words and advice, i am wishing you nothing but success, and youre already doing an amazing job breaking barriers and bringing up conversations that need happen. Yeah I definitely got discouraged, growing up a lot of people didn't tell me to quit when it got tough. So when so many people were telling me to quit I was like "Wow I guess I suck that bad" Also side note, you know something what's crazy too, I feel like on Twitter the gatekeeping community is STRONG!! It's also funny that you talk about connecting with other devs. At my first programming job all the other devs were REALLY into pro football. I don't mind pro football - I'd love to go to a game in person - but I don't follow it at all. I felt like I was on the outside of every conversation. Talking about other people playing a sport is probably in the top 3 most boring conversation topics I can think of. It really doesn't matter your sex, race, or background, it's a crapshoot whether or not you will hit it off with your co-workers.

      Yeah in the beginning I was fine with sharing my culture with people and explaining things but then after awhile it gets tiring. I was like man I wish there was just ONE person that got me. Especially going from being surrounded by Black people to being the only one. sometimes I would Google pictures of Michele Obama because I would go weeks without seeing another black person And then later down the line I met a Black Professor and she is part of the reason I started doing better in school. We were from the same city and for one it was so powerful to see a Black women in a leadership position with a phd and 2. she told it to me straight and really challenged and motivated me.

      @@MayaBello The thing about real engineers are back end is true because that's engineering.. front end is like dressing up code. That's just fact. I am a physicist and we dont' call people that do basic stuff physicists lol, it's technicians. In regards to women, it's also true generally women get into the less "hard" parts of anything... however software engineer is also stupid. You should seek to be software lead project manager that's where money is..

    I am not a gate keeper, but I ran into many gate keepers. Gate keepers you find in all industries and all types of jobs. From the very bottom up to the very top. People are just people, and this is the simple truth, people are assholes LOL. Whether your black, white, Asian, Hispanic. I am from NYC and people very, very prideful in acting like assholes. I am Latino from the Caribbean and I have seen it all. The reality I've notice in mostly all jobs you work in there are groups and you got your gate keepers. The gate keepers want to set the standard and tell you how things are done and how these are the norms even though this isn't the truth. The groups just want to fit in and be invisible pretty much. So, I've worked in many types of different industries and despite what type of work it is, you need to have good soft skills to deal with the gate keepers and also learn to walk away and leave them speaking to themselves. This is my own opinion and my experience from working many different types of jobs.
    Excellent video!

    You can't control what people say to you but you can control how you respond to it.
    If you faced isolated events like people laughing at you or being passive-aggressive, welcome to life lol. It happens everywhere.
    You come to sales or retention department and people will laugh in your face if you can't meet your monthly targets. Are you going to quit?
    Don't let that discourage you. Don't let little things like that pierce through you because if you let the opinions of other eat you up from the inside, you won't wanna go to work. Period.

    I hate how toxic the tech industry is. I admire women who can endure it, but I'm moving closer to the business side because of the toxicity. Life is too short for me to surround myself with...idiots.
    Every toxic thing you see on Reddit is legit pushed into your face in person in the tech field.

    I worked some years as a programmer. I think that a rather large fraction of programmers are on the autism spectrum. The last place I was there were 5 other programmers, and only one of them ever asked a question about me as person/my previous experiences - and he didn't understand simple irony. At lunch, they talked about things - not people (except themselves) or society; when they talked about news, it was only about tech news. I stopped after 9 months.

    Lady, I'm a full grown adult. Video games can be fun, but are not my life. About 99% of anime is overrated. Lots of immature people into it. I like traveling, gardening, health, language learning, art, robotics, psychology, etc. I steer clear from people who have a personality compromised of two forms of media 🙄

    Loving your videos as always! Luckily I haven't personally experienced any Gate-keeping examples but I know it certainly exists!
    I also definitely agree with your passionate statement - passion certainly comes when you are invested and actively trying to understand / break down and tackle a problem and the thrill that comes with that!
    Diversity is definitely important especially in this field, again there is a lack of minorities and women in tech, in which I feel members of these groups are needed, to provide a range of insights, ideas and experiences to a team.

    Hello my friend, how's it going? Your channel is amazing I've been enjoying a lot watching your videos it's good to improve my knowledge in programming languages and to pratice my English. By the way I'm from Brazil and currently I'm working as a Network Enginner and I started to learn Python to solve and automate my script when I'm configurating some CISCO swithes and routers. So believe or not I don't like to play games lol, it's weird to say that because most of my classmates they love to play video games. About animes I confess that I love specially now that I'm joining in some English meeting with Japanese via zoom, I'm really interested to learn Japanese as my six language, because you know I already speak JavaScript and a bit of C++. See you, thanks

    I agree 100% with the "if you aren't passionate about programming you shouldn't do it". The reason I feel that way is that programming is hard, technology is constantly changing, etc. If you are just in it for the money I don't think that will be enough to get you through learning new technology and improving your skills. Some people might be smart enough to just coast through it and do it for the money but I think that is the exception. Also, I would rather work with someone that is passionate about their work - the quality and dedication just naturally flow from that passion. Isn't passion what separates a career from a job? I think the "if you aren't passionate about..." statement applies to all careers. I don't believe in any of the gate-keeping bullcrap though. Every programmer is learning no matter how much experience or education they have.

    • @MayaBello
      @MayaBello  3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Ah I see your perspective! I was not passionate AT ALL about programming in the beginning (for about 2 years) and a lot of people told me to quit because of that!! However I just had some weird gut feeling that was telling me to just keep at this. I'm personally happy I didn't listen to that advice because I had to figure out what the hell was going on first. I think it can be hard to be passionate about something you don't fully understand and interest not passion is enough to learn something. However I understand your perspective!

    • @Harken4949
      @Harken4949 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I do think though that a lack of passion can be useful though. If you are not emotionally invested in what you are doing I think it gives you an advantage when addressing problems because you can see things pragmatically, rather than being enmeshed. A little indifference can be healthy.

      "I don't believe in any of the gate-keeping bullcrap though" - it does exist. She is only getting it because she is young and new in the field. Once she gets more experience and excels, they snide remarks will go away.

    • @ChristopherSalisburySalz
      @ChristopherSalisburySalz 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MayaBello Just read this. I agree with you. I hadn't really considered that lack of passion could be a result of struggling to understand and do the job but that makes perfect sense. I think programmers and employers need to manage their expectations of new developers. I remember when I pushed my first commit, which was just a path change in a script, I was beyond thrilled. I thought "I am a professional programmer now!!" I knew I had a lot to learn and so did my boss. I found joy in the simplest of victories. I was given the simple assignments while I got a handle on source control, the IDE and the other tools. I think I was very fortunate to start at the company I did. People were kind and helpful. They wanted me to succeed.

    LOL, gatekeeping, can confirm. When I was in college in the early 2000s, the engineers and comp sci folks would mock Windows all the time and extol the virtues of Linux. So I decided to install Red Hat. Little did I know that got mocked, too, because pfft, because the SMART people use Debian. Or was it FreeBSD, because actually Linux is stupid? Well, whatever, because I was a computer art major. Nobody could argue with me that I wasn't a software engineer because I never claimed to be one. ;) I just sort of... ending up being a full stack developer after graduation.
    As a white woman I didn't have that culture shock. It's interesting to hear your experiences with that!
