  • Lance, George, Johan, and JB are back to recap this year’s Paris-Roubaix. They dive into the battle between Mathieu Van der Poel and Wout Van Aert, how this was the fastest Paris-Roubaix ever, and how the unusual amount of flats Jumbo-Visma faced could have affected the result of the race.

MVDP said it best in his post race interview. To win Roubaix you gotta have good luck and good legs . WVA did not have luck today. I’m a huge fan of both of these talents, you can’t take anything away from either guy. They were the favorites and they delivered!

Mentally MVDP is the better racer, and physically he’s a better anaerobic repeater than WVA. We’ve seen this again and again. WVA is a significantly better steady state athlete and can do things on 15-30 minute climbs that MVDP can’t. He’s also a better bunch sprinter. But MVDPs superior performance in classics just demonstrates that anaerobic repeatability trumps steady state power in these kinds of races.

Johan is the only one of these guys who has followed these two guys intensively from the beginning, and he is right. Yes WVA did incredible things in the Tour de France, but MVDP did only half a proper Tour so far for all kinds of reasons, including his MTB adventures. That one time he was also brilliant, won a stage and had the yellow jersey for a week.
The only part of the season that you can compare them going head to head is the spring, and even though WVA started his road career before MVDP did, he now has 1 monument compared to 4 for MVDP. And he won that one MSR before MVDP even properly started his road career, has not won since. In these races, MVDP has dropped WVA regularly, never the other way round. Wout van Aert is an absolutely phenomenal rider, and he is head and shoulders above his kind of riders in the Tour, as George says. But what George is not taking into account is that WVA was also head and shoulders above these same riders in Gent Wevelgem. But when the two other phenomenal riders joined the party in RVV he was third best. Without these two guys he could very well have won both RVV and PR, because he is also at an incredible level at the moment.
It is sometimes a bit hard to imagine for people who are mostly focused on the Tour that someone can be better than Wout. And they maybe do not realize that MVDP won big races without being at his best in recent years for all kinds of reasons including his own stubbornness. Johan and most people who follow all of cycling in much more detail know this. Well this year he is at his best coming into a full spring season for the first time. And even if you want to call today a draw, he was still clearly stronger than WVA in the other two Monuments.
To cap things of, even Merijn Zeeman (JV DS) said that MVDP was stronger than WvA in this PR. I think he probably has more insight than George, and I think he would probably not have said this in the media.without hearing WvA say the same thing.

    • @zebounce
      @zebounce ปีที่แล้ว +3

could not have put it more eloquently, you're totally right on all accounts. Grand tours are what they are, but not the only thing to compete for. WVA seems to fall in between an uneasy gap where he's not quite good enough to win monuments, and definitely not the profile to win grand tours. MVDP has it easier in a way, he doesn't need to win grand tours. Pogi, well ... he seems to be on a different level, being able to win some classics and also do good on grand tours.

I agree MVDP is the explosive one day man, and he also has the personality to go for something with 100% commitment, but of course WVA can also challenge him there, he will win more monuments than the 1 he has I think and hope.
As for the grand tours, I would agree that they suit WVA better in terms of both skills and personality. I am sure MVDP can do great there as well, as his ten days in his first Tour shows. I am looking forward to how he will do this year, this will basically be the first time that he prepares for the Tour with a 100% focus.Apart from the first few stages that suit both these guys I am also curious to see wether he will be leading out Philipsen because there are a lot of sprint stages in this Tour. But he just does not have the personality to be structured and disciplined for three weeks in a row, it would be hard for him to challenge Wout for the green jersey because of the bunch sprints and he would not fit in a team with a GC contender like JV. So I agree that is a plus for WVA😉.

VDP has more of a winning instinct than WVA, at least in these classics, or for one day races. But WVA is more complete (it climbs well, time trial very well, sprint well). My opinion. We are privileged to experience this golden age of cycling. Let's enjoy!

MvdP wins by far more cyclocrosses and also win in MTB. I think he is the more complete cyclist, in the road to my mind WvA indeed has an edge. But not when steep climbs are involved, here MvdP is a winner. And it seems like a lot of classics fancy these kinds of climbs tilting the advantage to Mathieu.

Sounds like Lance and George need to go back about 5-6 years and watch MVDP and WVA cyclocross races.....Mathieu was dropping Wout like a hot potato in most rases. If Mathieu didn't have that crash at the Olympics and screwed up his training/fitness/back, he'd likely still be at his former level of fitness. He's obviously not bad now, but doesn't really have that "everyone else is racing for second place" power like he did, for example, at Amstel Gold. Some people come back strong after injuries/layoffs (like Wout after his TdF crash into the barrier and ripping his thigh apart), and others don't (like Chris Froome). Wout has also dropped a few pounds since going over to the road as well, he was a little "fluffy" when he primarily did just cyclocross.

Well actually they do and they still go onto Wallers at 60 per hour and then pray and then Van Baarle hits the deck and breaks something and needs to get his face glued in 3 places and is out for the rest of the spring. I am not making this up or stating an opinion, these were the exact words of Dylan van Baarle yesterday in his Dutch podcast. Do they have a choice? No, if you start you have to participate in this suicide, potentially career or even life-ending madness. Saying these guys have no fear is just adding to the romantic, heroic notions of this sport that usually have no basis in reality. Wallers is just like the good old gladiators, good luck if you can survive!

Great race. As for MVDP and WVA: MVDP has more raw power but WVA is nearly as strong and is a master tactician on one of the all-time strongest teams. MVDP wins more monuments but will never dominate the points competition and win a bunch of stages while helping his teammate win the GC at the TDF as WVA did last year. Well-deserved win for MVDP here.

Johan is right. And Wout’s flat is irrelevant. It’s how he races vs. how mvdp races. Wout just sits in now because he found out he loses if he attacks the race. Mvdp attacks the race. Wout waits for the attack and responds now. He didn’t used to do that. This is what johan means by winner. Mvdp is going for the win. Wout is waiting for the win. And look at the teams. Wout is a domestique/co-leader. Alpacine is built around mvdp but he rides like he has no team.

First off, I don't think that Van Aert's flat was just bad luck. You don't have that many flats within the team. Between Van Aert and his two trusty team mates you had 7 punctures. In one race. That isn't bad luck, that's crap tire or wheel choice. Hard to say which as with hookless rims you could have a rim/tire issue and not just a puncture - which should have been sealed by the sealant, right? Jumbo better be looking for answers on this one. That was just plain ridiculous. It may even been that weird tire pressure system they were rumoured to have been looking at.
I'm with Johan on the argument about Van der Poel being better than Van Aert. He just wants it more in the Monuments. That's the only difference - desire. A hunger. A need. Not a want, a need. Both are at an amazing level but Mathieu just seems to want it more in the Monuments.
Look at Van Aert. When he won San Remo in 2020 - Van der Poel wasn't even close to his best and had one of his rare outside the top 10 in a Monument results.
Look at all of Van der Poels Monument wins.
    2020 Flanders. Van Aert 2nd.
2023 San Remo. Van Aert 3rd
    2023 Roubaix. Van Aert 3rd.
2022 Flanders: Van Aert didn't ride but we know how that would have ended up. ;)
There's a pattern that is undeniable. When push comes to shove and big results are needed in the big one day races, Van der Poel gets the job done. In races like E3, where the stakes aren't as high, I'd give Van Aert the upper hand as these races don't seem to mean as much to Mathieu. You don't see the same fire from him. I think this is what will ultimately seperate Van der Poel's winning tally from Eddy Merckx's - Eddy wanted everything. But then again, the level is so much higher now. Maybe if Eddy raced against Mathieu he may not beat him.
You can see it also in the World Cyclocross results. When Mathieu came of age in 2019:
2019. Mathieu won, Van Aert 2nd
2020 Mathieu won, Van Aert 4th
2021 Mathieu won, Van Aert 2nd
    2022 Neither rode, Pidcock won.
It's a pattern that's not hard to see. Leaves little room for discussion. If you see those results and you had to bet your house on the next cobbled monument, where does the money go? It's either Van der Poel unless now it's Flanders and I think Pogi will make that his race over the next few years. I can see them renaming the Oude Kwaremont to Pogiberg as he'll dominate on that hill just like Boonen did on the Taaienberg aka Boonenberg.
I absolutely agree with Lance and George that Van Aert is an amazing cyclist and has done wonders in the Tour but when it comes to the big races like the Monuments or World Cyclocross, VdP for the win.
All we really need to say is 2019 Amstel Gold. A question to Lance and George: Can you ever see Van Aert laying his soul that much on the line to win like that? If Johan is reading this I know he's saying "no, no, no. Never...."
I just love that we live in an age were the big races are a spectacular affair. I grew up watching Hinault, Fignon, Kelly, Vanderaerden duke it out, elbows often flailing and I'm happy that we still have great racing.

Alpecin and Jumbo were running the same tyres, unreleased Vittoria Corsa Pro, but maybe they run different pressures or with.without liners. The worst timed punctures for Laporte and van Aert were both on two of the worst sectors, so it can be just pure bad luck. Ride those sectors any day of the week, no matter the setup, pretty decent chance you will puncture.
