    Hey Brad, I have been experimenting with the taping process. Instead of blue painters tape and aluminium, I have been using Gorilla tape. It's thicker and sticks like crazy. Plus, I can reuse it for many more times. I still use the blue tape around other areas that might get accidentally hit with the media blast. Saves me time and MONEY. More for Cervesas. LOL IMO. Try it, if it's a hassle let me know.

    • @BradMeehan
      @BradMeehan  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@AdamTheGuitarHero I've restored a set of black before. You'll notice that Ping gets away with imperfections in the wood by using plastic filler under the paint in some areas which was a deal breaker for going blond. I had to repaint the club since it would take the stain.
      Few things to mention: be sure to mask off the red face with a lot of tape. The paint stripper will melt it. Then, I put a piece of clear packing tape over the whole face to draw an outline of the area to mask when it came time to paint then transfered that shape into a layer of proper masking tape.

    • @AdamTheGuitarHero
      @AdamTheGuitarHero 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@BradMeehan lucky for me after a bit of stripping and sanding there doesn't appear to be any filler. Still some black paint trapped in the grain, so definitely didn't start life as a blonde. Thanks Alex. My compressor is tiny. It's enough to drive the little handheld media Blaster, However, if I were purchasing a NEW compressor, I would get the biggest one you can afford. Thank you again for your content.

    • @BradMeehan
      @BradMeehan  ปีที่แล้ว

      You could use sand paper. My recommendation is to use the least aggressive grit you can to achieve the look you're going for, then adjust from there if it's not cutting. It's more of an appearance thing than a texture-for-grip thing, so even a scuff pad would work if you just want that contrast between shiny and matte finish.

    Are these slingshots carbon steel? I have a set of Nike Blades I will be restoring but don't have the setup for nickel plating yet.

    • @BradMeehan
      @BradMeehan  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't believe they are as they have not corroded at all and I've done nothing to protect them. I tried to look up specs but couldn't find what the material was. The blades, however would need some sort of protection like nickel or even taking them to a chrome shop. My channel tries to do things on the cheap while still achieving great results, so chrome is out for me because of the expense. Let me know if you have any questions along the way. If I can do this, anyone can.

      I do polish it first. I want it all uniform before I change the texture of a surface. Otherwise I'd stare at the imperfections underneath and want to redo it. Part of my self-diagnosed touch of OCD, probably.

    What grit sandpaper did you use after the deburring and did you sand or polish the club face to get out any scratches before using the media blaster on them?

    • @BradMeehan
      @BradMeehan  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      400, then maybe 600 grit. It really depends on how deep they are.
      I generally start with a higher grit to see if that takes it out first then move lower grit if not. It saves time on sanding by not going too aggressive too early. I criss cross 90 degrees in straight lines when I switch grits. The finer you sand the less time you spend on the sisal wheel.
      And I do sand the club face to get it the most even looking after blasting. It's a borderline ocd thing I do.

      @BradMeehan  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's personal preference. The blasting has some benefit in terms of texture on the face, but I feel it's more aesthetics. The contrast just looks great next to a shiny, polished surface. Also, if the face was previously blasted, your polishing may have 'smoothed-out' a portion of it, so this just gets it back to a straight line with clear definition.

      Yes, and the hand sanding. The sisal wheel gets out the scratches before polishing.

      *Eventually. You're better off just hand sanding with 220, 400, 800, etc.

      @@BradMeehan that's some lovely finish, but only with polishing you'll be protected from rust ? I just sanded the sole of my miura 4 iron and detected that the nickel bath went away, so I don't think that only polishing over this will protect the club from rust, or maybe im wrong...would you clarify? thanks

      @@miguellopezquincoces4851 I'm this video, I polished a club that was not previously plated so corrosion and oxidation wouldn't be an issue. Your club, however sounds like they're plated so you'll need to either plate them using my home nickel plating tutorial or wipe them.often with corrosion prevention spray like CRC or WD40.

    • @BradMeehan

      You can. The only differences is that the Ping have a matte finish, so you'd have to hit them with the blasting gun (with the glass beads) after to dull-out the shine (unless you want them shiny and not matte).

    Hey Brad, what grit sandpaper were you using? Cheers!

    • @BradMeehan
      @BradMeehan  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I always start with the finest that will remove a scratch first before going more aggressive. 400 to 600 works, but takes more time. But, you'll end up doing less work on your polishing because you won't have to take out the deep scratches introduced by a heavier grit.

    • @BradMeehan
      @BradMeehan  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@simonhuttley8850 I used a 50/50 mix of muriatic acid and water. You can make it more dilute or use a different acid (like vinegar) but it will take longer.
      You shouldn't need it on a stainless club like the Nike in this video.
      Also, using salt will accelerate rust so avoid that in the mix.
