    Universities used to be the place where "free thinkers" could study, discuss and think outside the box.
    Oxford and Cambridge universities didn't become the seat of great thinkers and inventors by telling people what to think and what to discuss, they became that way by NOT limiting what to think or discuss.
    Critical thinking is how society is allowed to move forward.
    Restricted thinking is how society moves backwards.

      A tiny fraction of their history that was true. Historically, until say the late 50s, universities taught orthodoxy. There was a brief window when everyone just got stoned. The west was rich and yes decadent. I recall that Newton famously left university and researched alone. In fact I ask you, when do you feel that universities embraced independent thinking? Stephen Fry is highly intelligent, well read, knowledgeable open-minded, humble and non judgmental. For me, his greatest gift is his ability to come up with and use the perfect word here and there and everywhere to say exactly what he means to say without ambiguity. I could listen to him for hours. I respect and admire him immensely. You should react to the debate he did with Christopher Hitchens about whether the Catholic Church is a force for good.

      Stephen was educated in the Classics. He has a wide vocabulary and a strong command of the language. There was a time when his eloquence wouldn’t have been considered quite so remarkable. The drop in standards of grammar and vocabulary are largely to blame, but no one is allowed to say that anymore. Apparently it’s all good as long as the person you are talking to understands what you’re saying.
      And yet, at the end of it all, we all know that people like Stephen are able to communicate more accurately and effectively, and it’s not simple pedantry or self-aggrandisement.

      This is correct, but also a missing a one fact that is obvious in context, when you have seen the video. Harvey Weinstein led to the Me Too movement by being the evil slime that got exposed. Just so we're clear that he didn't start the movement himself. It was women coming forward and daring to speak against a culture of silence (which could also be called a "political correctness".

He came to the pub one evening shitting his pants and told us he had Stephen’s number. Obviously we called bullshit but after a few pints he got the balls to call it. Stephen picked up and we chatted to him for 10 minutes, he was lovely and took it all in his stride. We must have rang him 2 or 3 more times and he knew us by name. Stephen Fry has an amazing life story from skipping school...borrowing a family friends coat to sleep rough which had a credit card in the pocket. Getting arrested for theft of said credit card and spending 3 months in a young offenders institute to getting good grades on his school exams on release and passing the entrance exam for Cambridge to study on a scholarship. Getting an honours degree and meeting his fellow comedy actors during this time like Rowan Atkinson (Mr Bean to many) and Hugh Laurie (of House fame). Both of which he starred alongside in successful tv programs.

      Also it has much more respect for the votes people give. I'm from germany and while I won't go into our whole voting system we mainly vote for a party and the party then becomes a % of seats in the parliament. So in principle almost every vote counts in the end. (there is a 5% threshhold that parties have to overcome to enter parliament) In systems like the US where it is winner takes all only almost half of the votes don't count in the end, because they are not for the winner and those people subsequently don't really have any representaion.

    The great irony of this compilation is that its very existence confirms what Stephen says in the beginning; We only listen to the people we like.
    To take Stephen Fry's advice against locking ourselves into echo chambers and turn it into an echo chamber is kind of deviously genius. I know this wasn't the intention of the uploader, but it's basically what you do when you only record the argumentative highlights of one part of a four-way debate.
    For that reason alone, you should watch the entire debate. Unfortunately, it turns, as most public debates do, into a bit of an unfocused mess, and Stephen himself is guilty of not letting people finish and making jokes on their behalf, despite what he promised in his self-introduction (to listen). But hey, maybe you'll learn something else from watching the debate. It's been too long since I watched it to tell what I learned.

    • @hughtube5154
      @hughtube5154 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yes. As Stephen Fry recounts it here, Harvey used to be the head of Miramax studios, which launched the directing careers of Quentin Tarantino and Kevin Smith, amongst others. Weinstein was seen as the most powerful man in Hollywood because of his track record of producing low budget films that did really well at the box office and / or scooped up at awards ceremonies. (Shakespeare In Love being the prime example; he invented the bombardment of the press association in order to get his films Oscar nominated. Good Will Hunting being another ecample.) He leveraged that power to force himself on wannabe actresses, using quid pro quo tactics where sexual favours were returned with movie parts. In the case of some, he would force himself on the unwilling, behaviour which came back to haunt him as he's been jailed for sexual assault. The #Metoo movement started so actors could tell of their exploitation at his, and other predators', hands.

    I love this man. I followed him since 1989 I guess, when he had a comedy show together with Hugh Laurie. If his name doesn’t ring a bell, you probably know him as the lead character Dr. Gregory House from the series ‘House M.D.’, or just ‘House’. The comedy show was called ‘A Bit of Fry and Laurie’. It was a show unlike anything else I’ve ever watched and thought it was hilarious, even though it was quite hard to follow for the young Dutch boy that I was. I think it’s worth watching some of their sketches, which were partially improvised, here on TH-cam.
    Even though there certainly are many differences between the two, he frequently reminds me of Christopher Hitchens. Both very outspoken and both masters with words. They both formed a team in a long debate about the statement “The Catholic Church is a Force for Good in the World”. You’ll be able to find this two hour debate by searching for that statement. Maybe you may need to add the names ‘Hitchens’ and ‘Fry’, but I don’t think it’s a hard search. In all fairness, I thought their opponents made it a little too easy, because the native language of those two is NOT English. Then again, it’s not the debate by itself that I think is impressive. It’s the opening statements and the rebuttals of Hitchens and Fry that are so powerful that it’s almost impossible to disagree (in my opinion).
    I’m not sure if this debate, or even just the powerful opening statements, is something you would like to comment on on your channel, because…. well, Americans and religion…, but I’m pretty sure you would be interested in watching this debate.
    Sorry, this is just a recommendation for you from someone who feels really strongly about this, especially because it’s not so much about personal beliefs, but about the position of the Catholic Church and what’s wrong with it according to Hitchens and Fry. And I learned many things that I had no idea about before I saw that video. I understand that this may seem like I want to push you into certain directions. I honestly don’t. But I saw how much you admired Stephen Fry and his mindset, just like I do. And I thought this would interest you because of your own points of view that were in line with the wordings of Stephen Fry.
    I loved watching this video. Thanks! 🧡🧡🧡

    On some things I'm on the left, on some things I'm on the right, on most things I'm somewhere mostly in the middle. In Stephen Frys desired world I'd be a person, in PC culture I'm a traitor, a fool and a self-hater. But they don't bring me arguments, they try to force compliance. If you're taken hostage you may comply but what does it do to the heart? You're not swaying me to your side. Like those climate activists spraypanting stonehenge? I care about the environment, but by trying to be that forceful, my first thought is 'lets go dump some oil in a lake or something'. Let people be people, we're all multifaceted. If there's an extreme action there will be an extreme reaction. PC is how you get people that agree 80% with you to go 'F all you have to say'.

    • @bulletsandbracelets4140
      @bulletsandbracelets4140 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

      It feels like the problem is people just don't have enough respect for each other's individual experiences. I don't give PC any weight because when I'm speaking to someone, the only thing that matters is how they individually respond to me. The internet removes that connection, and that's why this is almost entirely an internet problem.
      I'm left on most things because of the life I've lived. My mother is disabled and unable to work and relies on government housing and social security to have a roof over her head and food. Someone without that experience might look at "welfare" as something to be taken advantage of, something that promotes laziness. I see it as a necessity that does far more good than harm, and the entire reason I pay taxes - to help those who need it and who I cannot personally give everything to myself.
      No one should be called a traitor, but I do think there's too little understanding on both sides of this. Different people have different experiences, and some are hurt immensely by decisions that do not at all impact others. So those people are, out of necessity, going to get more upset than others. I feel this any time cutting social security comes up. For some, this means a later retirement. For me, this means my mother loses everything.
      We have to stop treating discussions we see online as if they are indicative of the way people act in the real world, most of all. Social media boosts the worst "PC" takes because those are the things that generate discourse. In reality, all "political correctness" is, in an individual conversation, is asking that a person listen to you and respect that your experiences and perspectives might be different. It's courtesy. No one can force it, but we can all expect it from people if they want us to respect them in return.

If you would like to see more of his eloquence and gentle magnificence, I would recommend a debate he was in with another wonderfully eloquent Englishman, Christopher Hitchens, where they verbally battled with Archbishop John Onaiyeken and Anne Widdecombe on the subject of Catholicism. I have not seen the whole thing, so I don’t know the context, but as a point of rhetoric, it’s somewhat undercutting your point that _you_ are referring to “the black guy” (quotes or otherwise) but not mentioning his name, while mentioning Peterson’s. Google tells me his name is Michael Eric Dyson, fyi, but again, haven’t watched the thing, not vouching for anyone’s opinion either way, and I’m not presuming anything about what your opinions either, just commenting on the words as written.

      There's nothing negative or racist about being black or pointing out someone is black any more than saying tall or fat, it's just an identifying feature, and the only unique one that helps identify him.
      I don't know his name, so physical appearance is obviously the next step in identifying him uniquely out of the four, just as the woman would have identified the only women in the group.

    Stephen Fry is what people had called "an intellectual", before the term became overused and ambiguous. Today it seems that everyone who has an university diploma or has read a book or two is called in intellectual, but the term is not the synonym for "smart". It used to mean a person who is not only knowledgeable, but erudite, someone who uses the intellect with integrity and humility, always on the basis of ethical and humaine principles.

    As a comedian, as an actor, as a writer, as a person, I've always admired Stephen Fry and his brilliant mind.
    A perfect example of the point he makes here is the 1974 movie, Blazing Saddles. It's one of the funniest movies ever made, yet it's also a hard biting example of the stupidity of racism. The movie was edgy for its time, but it simply couldn't be made today as someone, everyone, would find something in it to offend either themselves or feel offended for someone else, even if that someone else weren't the least bit offended. Political correctness has created a social and political environment in that we cannot say what we feel, no matter how well meaning we are. Blazing Saddles showed that the best way to combat racism, or any other way of 'othering' certain groups of people, is to confront it head on. Make people think instead of telling us how to think.

    Jordan Peterson and Stephen Fry absolutely dominated this debate. So much so that in the end, the other side ended up saying racist things as a rebuttal. Specifically, when Dr. Michael Eric Dyson said that the only reason Dr. Peterson had the opinions he had was because he was a 'white man' and white men are terrible, and that's why Jordan Peterson is a 'mean, mad white man.'
    The New York Times journalist didn't understand what Stephen Fry and Jordan Peterson were saying because she was given multiple opportunities to answer a question Jordan Peterson had asked, 'when does the left go too far because it can because hundreds of millions of people have died due to leftist policies. So, where is the tipping point?' And her response was, 'when they start killing people.' To which Peterson responded (I'm paraphrasing), "yeah but they were killed because of an idea that the left wanted to uphold..so what was that idea. They didn't just wake up and start killing people indiscriminately. They were killing specific people because those people specifically represented something.'
    And Michael Eric Dyson was pretty racist and dismissive in this debate. In addition to chastising someone because of the colour of their skin and attributing behaviours and ideas because of someone's skin colour. He was dismissive of the holocaust, which is pretty reprehensible in my books. Specifically, he asked Peterson if the right has ever gone too far. And Peterson replied, "of course." Dyson, "like when?" Peterson, "How about Auschwitz?" Dyson, "I mean....okay....what about recently?" Which to me, is a dismissive response because people have done the exact same thing with Black Slavery in the US and Dyson was speaking to the consequences of Black Slavery during this debate. So if someone had said, "Slavery...I mean...okay....but that was so long ago. Get over it. What about something recent?" Dyson would have had a conniption. He was hypocritical and his arguments were baseless throughout the whole debate.
    It wasn't even a debate. It was a wholloping. And that was indicative in the post-debate results. Where Peterson and Fry's side gained an additional 25%+ of the audience vote once the debate was finished, totaling more than 2/3rds of the audience voting in their favour, or for their side.
