- ATI T5 Fluorescent Light Bulb Comparison Part II - A couple of weeks ago, we looked at a comparison of the five different t5 fluorescent bulbs made by the German company ATI. Going from left to right, they are Coral Plus, Blue Plus, AquaBlue Special, Actinic, and Purple Plus.
While that video was about the bulbs individually, this video is all about popular combinations of these t5 bulbs. Which was your favorite?

2 & 6 was my favourites. :)
Would have loved to see Blue+ and Coral+ combo
This was the best video I've ever watched on TH-cam I think. Mainly because it opens your eyes to everything that can go on in your tank by making minute changes!!! So neat : )
Since a lot of people have 4-8 bulb combos, it would be great to see what a mix might look like. Such as actinic, blue plus, and purple plus.
I liked number 6 the most. I wish you would have done blue plus and coral plus combo.
Thank you, was looking for something like this to decide which color combos to try for new t5 fixture. Just wish you would have included a full tank photo with each combo as well.
2 and 6
Going back from PCC to T5. and as always this is the best video to make choices. 5+7 are favorite
I ordered blue plus and purple plus 2 days ago, then came across this video. Good job I preferred number 6 (without cheating)
This is still relevant and very helpful!! # 1 for me as I am a sun/white light gitl.
I run 50:50 blue plus and actinic 8 bulb. also looks great when just running the two bulb sunrise and sunset.
I would vote for 6. Love the colors and that's what I'm using in my tank
7 was my favourite. Keep the videos coming Than!
I like 5 and 7 but it would help to know the true color of the corals under day light.
Again, a really good video. I like the comparison without telling first so that the audience is encouraged to set aside preconceived notions about the bulbs and choose their favorite. I do kind of wish that the pictures for comparison were put on the same page for each coral like in the first video for easier comparison, but I see why they were separated, too. In both videos, I was thinking it would be nice if a plain white 10,000k bulb could be compared as well since it would give a nice reference point for how much these bulbs really help the corals shine.
Thank you again! This is really helping me choose my bulbs... and my combination.
6 and 7 are my favorites. My four bulb combo when I get my Coral + tomorrow will be as follows from front to back
Blue +
Coral +
Purple +
Blue +
3 & 6 Again man what a great video, thanks for taking the time do show us.
I really appreciate you doing this for us tank lovers.
it was 5 and 7 the ones i liked the most.
the 1 selection wasnt bad either but i would appreciate an
FTS contest of a mixed reef tank.Sometimes the whole picture
is a lot different from coral snapshots.Anyway good work.
I wish you guys also took a full view of the tank. I am still indecisive.
VERY helpful video!! Really helped me dial in my new bulb choices. I ended up going with the #1 choice of ab special and actinic instead of my usual b+ p+ c+ combo. I would not have done that without this video showing the differences. THANK YOU!!!
6 was my fave.
I love the actinic and blue plus combo, I know what I’m asking for for Christmas
5 is the most natural and my pick.
I use four different ATI bulbs on my quad T5 fixture. The first two bulbs to kick on in the morning are the blue plus and actinic. I use these two bulbs in my sunrise/sunset of my timing schedule. These two bulbs together really make all my soft corals pop. It's been my favorite color combination. After the first hour or so my next two bulbs come on, which are the coral plus and aqua blue special. These are definitely more of the whites/daylight. With all four bulbs on for most of the day I experience great light output as well as all around color. I also experience great growth. I have been using ATI bulbs for at least 18 months plus now. I use the same combination on my other tank with my rose bubble tip anemone's and have had great color and success.
How do you like the look of that combo, do you like having the aquablue special instead of two coral plus? I am trying to decide a 4-bulb setup as well. ATI suggests 2x coral plus and 2x blue plus. I was thinking of trying to incorporate an actinic in there as well. Do you have and pictures of your setup?
Wondering how your tanks been with LightIng I’m thinking of going with your setup coloration in BTA are not so good running 3 b+ and one Purple + now any help would be great 👍 thanks in advance
@@TheRealDrCube Wondering how your tanks been with LightIng I’m thinking of going with your setup coloration in BTA are not so good running 3 b+ and one Purple + now any help would be great 👍 thanks in advance
@@ejl2008 after 8 years and multiple tanks I just sold off my last tank recently to take a break for awhile. As far as the ATI T5 set up, that was a while ago. I do not know if they offer any newer type bulbs, but I can tell you this set up I had worked very well. Especially for the BTA’s. The 4 bulbs I used (mentioned in my comment above) worked great and are a great choice. I’ve had a few different tanks and eventually I went to all LEDs. No BTA. All soft coral. Pretty much all in the Euphyllia family. The leds worked great and are now what most people use these days.
@@ejl2008 Hey, the 2 Blue+ 2 Coral+ setup I have been runnings has worked out pretty well. My BTA is still going strong, though the clown died so I have been target feeding it every once in a while. Overall I do like the look as well. I feel like with a 4 bulb setup this is the closest to "natural" I could get without really doing some fancy combinations of more intense bulbs (like 6500+ and a bunch of blues etc...)
256 were m,y favorite i think imma do a mike of them so actinic /blue plus/purp plus/ab spec/coral plus
Personally, I liked the '6' combination the most. Watching the video this way I find that it brings out the colours on the corals in what is in my opinion the best. Highlighting the colours while allowing shadows and dark spots... but while being 'bright' enough that you don't end up with an over all 'dark' feel to the corals, like I felt was being produced in the first few colour combinations. Thanks for this video, Than. I'm a newbie aquarist, and I'm still learning about lights and such.
wow very useful! I'm very curious what you think or if you have video's of ATI Blue Plus and Blue Special combined.
5 & 7 look the most natural and pleasing to me.
2 and 6 here. But I’d like to see actinic + blue plus + coral plus + purple plus in a 4 bulb fixture.
How have the true Actinics worked out for you? Improved coral health in any way?
Video is so detailed man. Weird question. Can you run this 5 bulb together?
5 and 7, mostly 7. The purple plus shows beautiful coloration to the coral but it's just the optical and i think it don't helps much with coral growth
Tough choice when you look at the different effects on each coral but overall I thought 6 was the best. Great video Than
Perfect just what I was looking for! Thank you so much!!
Another Than gem. So helpful and informative.
I like 2 and 5 but I was wondering what is a good bulb max growth
Great video! I like 2 and 6
i am currently running coral plus, and blue plus but after seeing this video i think i am going to have to switch to #5 purple plus and AB special
Thanks for the Videos Than.
I watch all of them Including the Ones on your other TH-cam Channel (Tidal Gardens).
Can't wait for an Update on the T5 Videos (Much Much better Choice for SPS than LED for sure).
6 for me! Great comparison!
Of your choice I like 6 and 7.. I think the main concept of choice nowadays relies on getting a full spectrum. And I think running a fixture with just the bulbs in your combo would be a little lacking especially just Actinic and purple+.
I prefer to run blue + and coral + solely. In my 8 bulb I run 6 blue + and 2 coral +. Initially I used Actinic just to drop the par.
I applaud your time and effort it was awesome to see the shots of the coral split up with the separate bulbs.
I love your video updates and always watch them the day they come out =)
Using 6x24w dimmable.. I'm thinking about 4 blue plus and 2 either coral plus or ab special.. Still undecided about which 2 I'd go for.. Looking at colour graph of ati website they look pretty similar, both 15000k ish..but coral plus has blue plus,ab special & purple Plus.. 5:4:1 ratio.. What would you say about your choice going coral plus over ab special or any other standalones..
Cheers
I vote 3 and 7. 3 slightly more favorable. Nice video as usual.
2 and 4 but would love to see blue plus/ coral plus together
4 & 7. I did not know this was just for fish tanks! That is coincidentally my application!
6 definitely looks the best
Hi Than, what would your opinion be on doing a combination of all 5? Also which out of the 5 would you recommend doubling up on in my 6 bulb unit? Cheers.
6...would have like to see B+ and C+ combo
3-5. On a 4 bulb. I would put Blue plus/ Actinic/Actinic/ Coral Plus. In that order.
You should re release these on your tidal garden channel
5 and 7. Wondering what a combination them would do
Ok I watched this 3 times...and personally I like 5
6 was my favorite.
Quick question If I have a T5 with 6 output can I just place 4 bulbs and leave 2 empty? Thanks , great video.
It would be cool to compare to natural light color and artificial t5.
What kind of chalice is that you use in the comparison? Awesome video like always!
I just bought a 4 bulb an 8 bulb fixture. I have a 55 gallon an will have mushrooms, frog spawn, pagoda cup an green sinularia this is same setup I had years ago. Should I use the 4 bulb or 8 bulb? I like number 2 an 6 in the video.
Your combinations were only 2 bulbs, what if you have a 6 bulb fixture? Are there any other combinations or just get 3 of one bulb and 3 of the other?
I preferred #5 on all but the last coral
I don´t understand. is he using only 2 different kinds of bulbs or theese two with others? Can someone please explain to me? Because i liked nr 5 best. and i want to know wich bulbs exept for ab special and purple plus. i have 8x54W
5 had the best realistic + fluorescence combination.
I use #6, 4 Blue plus and 2 coral plus or 3/3
I like #6 as well- I don't understand how to interpret this though. If I have a four bulb unit does that mean #6 would be two actinic, a purple boys and blue plus?
5 and 7
+Valerie Olivier Same here. 5 & 7
5&7 Look the best
2 was my favorite
I have a 150 g high tank with 2 ,51 led full spectrum lights I'm putting them in my canopy and I'm installing 2, single t5 reto kits I was wondering what t5 bulbs would you recommend?
Awesome video! Not sure how often you check the comments anymore but I was wondering if you had any thoughts about a 4-bulb combo. ATI recommends 2x Coral Plus and 2x Blue Plus. Do you think have 2x Coral Plus, 1x Blue Plus and 1x Actinic would end up looking way too blue?
DrCube will not be to blue 😊
My question is what combination gives the best growth
I like 7 p+ c+
What would be to use as the other 2 bulbs as i have a 4 bulb fixture for my 55 gallon.
Hi what will you recommend on a 10 light fixtures t5 I have a Red Sea max 500 s 135 gallons what will be a good combination
# 7 love purple plus and coral plus
#5. thanks for the video. I just ordered a AI prime. might ha e rethink that.
5 all the way!
What's the best combo for growth? I'm adding 2 T5s to my AI hydras
I'm thinking of adding T5 to my Hydra as well. Let me know if you get something and like it.
Did you guys ever add T5s to the hydras, , bulb ?color
My combination is 1 and 7. I believe the Actinics with Aquablue Sp does a well full spectrum of light and Purple+ with Coral+ balances well with the missing spectrum. I am one that doesnt like too much blue, and i believe that the corals (based on my experience) takes too much time for the corals to react with the intensive blue lightning of 2 blue+. (then it means in my opinion that too much blue lighting the corals may not like as much) With this combination i get to see a lot more coloration within my corals than just blue lighting. and even better benefit that my corals seems to react to the first set much faster opening up then with blue+ alone.
first set are (#1)Actinics and Aquablue Special.
second set are (#7) Purple Plus and Coral Plus.
What you use actualky?
5 shows nice bright colours and 7 dims just a bit
I think....you should have showed full tank shots as well.
GREAT VIDEO 2 AND 6 FOR ME!!!
purple plus colral plus actinic and AB special !
I liked 7 the best :)
Actinic and blue plus how many of each
will you have good growth with just running the purple and blue plus alone ?
#6
like 5 most
4 + 7 are my favourite!!
Me too! Hardly anyone picked 4. 👍
Hows the tank doing? Updates please.
5 and 6 for sure
thats great if you use only two bulb combination
over my 180 gallon
6 bulb 60" fixture
blue
purple
actinic
coral plus
blue
aquablue sp
kessil 150 blue led supplement
4 bulb 60" fixture
blue
actinic
purple
blue
3 & 6 Combination. But all your Green house corals are under AI LED? Do a new Hydra 52 video :)
i'd like to remake my comment i posted 7 months ago.
Now with that said i used the combination of #1 and #7 and slowly but surely my corals was just not feeling it after 3 months of use. dont ask me why. So i did my research about the actinics and Coral Plus and
Aqua Blue Special. My SPS was not digging my previous setup as mention
before. (#1,#7) so i changed back to my old bulbs because i needed my
SPS to get back on how they was before the new combination. I had a
spare Actinic and a spare Blue Plus and I noticed something about ATI's Actinic and while our eyes cannot produce the low violet nm the actinic produces, (the bulbs produces lower light to the naked eye.) this does NOT by any means that par isnt in effect. i believe the actinics par is just about the same as blue plus and purple plus. And after watching this video you can see the combinations of #2,#4 and #6 when all the ATI Actinics, Blue plus and Purple plus are all on with a 4 bulb setup.
My new setup from back to front:
Back
Actinic (Dusk/Dawn)
Purple Plus (Daylight)
Blue Plus (Dusk/Dawn)
Actinic (Daylight)
Front
So from Dust/Dawn you see the combo #2, (Actinic and Blue Plus) then for Daylight effect, both #4 AND #6 takes effect because of Actinic/Purple plus and Blue plus/Purple plus and let me tell you something. My SPS polyps were actually more noticable. So then I went and bought all of the bulbs new and saw even more growth within the next 3 months.
I wont turn back because lets face it. The lights are for them not for my pleasure. If I went to this hobby for me to bring nature to home, the least thing I need to do is please myself to neglect their needs. If they react to them better, its because they need them better. Over all i got used to the lights and now i'm happy with them.
Good luck and Happy Reefing!

Wondering how your tanks been with LightIng I’m thinking of going with your setup coloration in BTA are not so good running 3 b+ and one Purple + now any help would be great 👍 thanks in advance
@@ejl2008 it's definitely a combination to get used to of how it looks. I ran that setup for a year and half up until I changed to Ocean Revive T247 with 2 Actinics. Corals took some time to adjust but got same growth.
I'll never be without ATI actinics ever again
What kind of chalice was that?
Than , I LOVE YOUR VIDEOS they're very informative and the camera work is truly exceptional. However, It's my opinion that the volume and tone of the narration is very uniform and it's hard to pay attention to with all the pretty pictures. Maybe get a little more animated with the narration? even if nothing changes these vidoes are awesome. Thank you!!
I like 5 and 7 lol 😂 nice videos bud thanks for doing that ;)
Number 6 was my #1 but in 2nd place in #2
3 x Blue+, 1 x Coral+, 1 x Actinic and 1 x Purple+ would look nice on a 6 tube ATI in my opinion.
Or for a bit more PAR and slightly less blue, perhaps 2 x Blue+, 3 x Coral+ and 1 x Purple+
2, 6 just look at the detail :)
Combination 5
dziękuję za film . doskonała robota ! :)
combo 6 - purple plus / blue plus :)
Personally, I have always had great success with a combination of 60% Blue+/40% Aquablue Special. I wouldn't bother with the low part actinic bulbs. The purple plus is OK, but adds an ugly pink hue to the reef. I have never tried the Coral Plus, so I can't comment on its color and performance. I will say that a combo of Blue+/Aquablue Special is second to none when it comes to coral coloration and growth.
PAR*
1 was my favorite.
I prefer 6.... currently running 2 blue+ and 2 coral+ for my 65g... you should have option 8 showing both coral+ and blue+ together
Overall total: (Bulb combo outcome)
Blue = 50% + 50% + 30% + 30% = 160%
Actinic = 50% + 50% + 30% + 30% = 160%
Aquablue Special = 40% + 40% = 80%
Purple Plus = 10% + 10% = 20%
