Not sure how old this video is, but needs to be updated. No more bpf 115. All must say USA for up to intermediate levels. Bbcor for the juniors.

Where does this guy umpire???? It's NOT the umpires responsibility to check the teams equipment Thats why you ask the managers at the plate meeting " Are your Players properly equipped per (whatever the league is) and MLB rules? "

A case of over umpiring! I don't want to be held liable for something I AM NOT BEING PAID FOR. You are assuming a responsibility beyond your perview! If someone were to get hurt during a game from an introduction of equipment that was faulty and everyone said well the "blue" said iui t was ok prior to the game! How are you going to defend yourself in court......

It all depends on what your league's umpire-in-chief has asked you to do relative to administering the game as the game's assigned umpire.
I have worked in leagues where the chief-umpire has told us to do exactly as these umpires are doing in this video. In fact, this is fairly standard operating procedure for LL tournament play (less so for regular season/house league play). I have worked in other leagues where the umpire-in-chief has told us the "Are all your players properly equipped to play under the rules of [insert league name]?" will suffice.
As for the question what would I tell the judge in the event of a player on my field getting hurt? If the chief-umpire told me to check the gear personally before each and every game, then my response to the judge is that I was checking the equipment as instructed by my superior, the chief-umpire.
In closing, do not assume any unnecessary risk and or liability. If you are unsure, check with the league's chief-umpire so you know exactly what to do and what not to do.
