    / @ajrestoration Good day ladies and gentlemen! This is an old Suffolk lawnmower I got from a good friend of mine. This will be a multiple-episode restoration, these lawnmowers are a lot of work to restore.

    In many respects, the Suffolk Punch was the first 'modern' motor lawn mower.
    When the Suffolk Punch was introduced in 1954 it represented more of an evolution than a revolution in mower design. Many of the design features were adopted by other manufacturers in later years and most domestic cylinder mowers still have a similar layout and appearance.
    The major components were made from pressed steel and lightweight alloys when most of the machines from rival manufacturers were still being built to pre-World War Two designs with materials such as cast iron and heavy gauge sheet steel. The Punch was also one of the first popular mowers fitted with a compact but powerful four-stroke petrol engine. This was manufactured by the company to its own design, unusual in an era when most mowers had either Villiers or JAP engines.
    The mower was made by Suffolk Iron Foundries of Stowmarket which had a long history of making agricultural and horticultural machinery. The company made its first hand-operated mowers some years before but the Punch was its first motorized model.
    The Punch was named after the well-known breed of 'Shire' horse and the company continued the equestrian theme with models introduced later in the 1950s and 1960s with names such as the Colt and Pony.
    The Suffolk Punch was a very popular machine and many thousands were sold in the UK and overseas. The Suffolk models were among the most reliable domestic motor mowers ever produced in the UK and many examples continue in use to the present day. Although not universally popular with collectors they do nevertheless have a small but growing band of loyal and dedicated devotees.
    Suffolk eventually became part of the Atco Qualcast group of companies and the name passed into obscurity for a number of years. However, the company's original base in Stowmarket remains a site of lawn mower production and is currently the headquarters of the Atco Qualcast group which is now owned by Bosch. The Suffolk Punch name was recently revived for the company's range of mid-market cylinder mowers.

    Hi Great video thank you. I've got the very same Suffolk punch lawnmower and about the same age. I've bought two fly type lawn hover mowers in the past when my Suffolk Punch has previously broken down and none come even close to what this lawnmower can do, the superior cut. I've got to take my magneto flywheel off (again) I think the points capacitor connector has broken (there's no spark!) and to refresh my memory I viewed your video in the hope of having a look at the flywheel puller -I borrowed the last flywheel puller butI am going to buy one myself- yes the flywheel is a left hand thread to tighten! Hope you get the thread cut back ok. Thanks again.

    When I was a kid, my dad had a Suffolk Super Punch and I can remember watching him go through the, to me at the time, complex procedure to start the engine! Once it was running and he'd started me off, I'd then have to cut the lawns, which was always a massive job! 🤣

    Cool mower! Great job on the gas tank filler, I'm not sure how i would have fixed that! My two cents: please get some P.B. Blaster or Kroil penetrating oil, its a game changer! And no disrespect, but I'm pretty sure the flywheel nut was left hand thread and you cleaned those threads off with the impact gun. 👍👍👍👍

    Probably going to need to have that crank end built up and machined down to the correct size to use a thread die on it. But not that hard to do. Thumbs Up!

    Good work. Why don't you have a hose connected to your brush instead of the current 1? Having it connected through your brush enable you to have constant wash fluid where you are using the brush.

    I really enjoy all your restorations, but I'm especially partial to anything with engine work in it! Two questions, one on-topic and one off-topic. 1) did the engine run before you started the restoration? 2) what's the source of the "hoo-hoo-hoo" sound in the background of some of your clips? In my part of the world (about halfway round from yours) I'd think it was some sort of owl or dove. Just curious. Love your content and looking forward to part 2 of this one!

    When you rebuild the engine I didn’t see you use a torque wrench and I am wondering if you did that off camera. Also you used oil. I wondered about some kind of a rebuild grease??

      I bet so too. Felt like a dumbass. The crank will be welded and machined at a local workshop.

      22:15 does appear to show the remnants of a left-hand thread. Don't beat yourself up though - you can't always predict thread direction by recoil rotation...

    I saw you made use of an electroplating kit in one of your videos. Would you be willing to let me know who you got it from ? Im also based in South Africa and keen to try out some zinc plating at home

    Flywheel nuts are left hand thread dude. Those threads were fine before you hit it with the impact. That being said we all make dumb mistakes when we're learning and anybody who says they didn't bust off threads or lose something important is lying.

      Not all of them are left-handed. This was the first left-handed flywheel nut I came across. The Robin, Briggs, and Honda motors I did were all right-handed threads. And yeah the threads were still good until I came along haha I should have checked and should not have used the Impact. So we learn.

    Threads destroyed..what did you expect,using a power tool on it?..try WD 40 and patience you might get somewhere...instead of trying to look good on TH-cam.

      Trying to look good on YT haha that's the first time I heard that one. Nothing of this is me trying to look good on TH-cam, If you knew exactly what and how that tool is supposed to be used, I am doing the exact opposite of trying to look good for YT. With that said we all make mistakes, if you have done restorations or serviced/adjusted or cleaned the points and condensers on these small engines before, you also would know why the threads were stripped, and such a silly comment would not have been made. We all make mistakes, and we learn from them and we fix them.
