I've always had Sing Sing winning best picture. This is the spark it needed. I saw the film in April at Miami Film Festival with some of the cast and director! I said then that it's the best picture winner. Surprisingly it didn't win the Miami Film Festival which is why i think A24 bought the Brutalist as a backup but now that wins are starting to come in for Sing Sing I think we will see a shift. This is giving CODA... a small film that premiered early, most people did not have it winning, and was not even nominated for director; yet it won best picture. The whole year I just never saw a film that had a better narrative. Wicked is close but with it only being half of a movie I can't see it winning. Same with Dune. Anora is a bit out there for some audiences in terms of sexualization. I think it is more like Poor Things which is why I still have it winning lead actress, but not picture
Sing Sing is the BEST MOVIE of the year and deserves nominations in most categories. The movie was shot on 16 mm film, in 19 days, with a very small crew. The DP, Pat Scola should be nominated for an Oscar for cinematography because the visual look, the lighting, the film choice, all created the naturalistic atmosphere to tell the story. Accompanied with Bryce Dessner's score that sells the beautiful scenes and intimate facial expressions. And kudos to the director, Greg Kwedar, who allowed dialogue to be ad-libbed at times, which created the emotional essence throughout the film that tugs at your heart. The cast deserves best ensemble because 90% of the cast are the formerly incarcerated men that participated in the RTA theater program while in Sing Sing and that authenticity shines. And what can you say about Coleman Domingo.... he deserves the Oscar this year, his performance is perfectly understated, and he allows the other men to shine because this is their story. Well Done!! Also, Clarence Maclin and Paul Raci both deserve best supporting nominations. Their performances tie the strings that pull the film to its brilliance. Best movie overall in a very long time and well worth the emotional journey.
It seems Gotham awards went for being "original" and "controversial". Since we mean very little and nobody cares about us let's be interesting at least - that's what they probably thought.
I only consider the Gotham awards as just a minor appetizer as the main course doesn't really start until the New York Film Critics and National Board of Review announce their winners. The Gothams to me never match up with most other awards which is great for more independent films to get their shout outs, but not a useful strategy to predict the Academy's future winners.

Thanks for always being ready with good material after every award!!! Looking what happenned, if they'd be giving outstanding lead performance for actor and actress, Demi Moore had a chance to win. I need her to win at least one award during this season. And Margaret Qualley too, of course. It's hard for non-Americans to predict since many pictures haven't been realeased of getting any buzz outside the USA (e.g. Anora) but some other are still causing international reations like The Substance.

i think the gotham awards is an urban group from NYC....so they clearly have their preferences for storytelling.... kind of like if obama's wall street inner circle picked the winners. Imagine if the Vatican had an awards ceremony and which films they would pick... it would be equally inappropriate and irrelevant. these smaller awards are created to lift up the films that critics and audiences didn't like to try and further shove a story narrative at society. that's all.
