it’s the fact that black people were teased for the colour of their skin, their lips, their body. back when I was in school, I was teased for my lips because they weren’t normal they were ‘big’ or were similar to ‘duck lips’. but today other races are tanning their skin to look darker, getting lip and butt injections. and getting braids. I was called medusa in school because of my long black braids.
It's sad that people make fun of people for their naturally occurring differences and it shouldn't be the case ...but it doesn't make sense to say that people that aren't from a certain culture can't do a certain thing just cause it isn't from their culture

I feel like you articulated the point very well and you hit on some major points. I also feel like they don’t care. We don’t stand in unison enough to make a real difference (I.e the black lady that thinks “it’s not that big of a deal”) people capitalize off of that but it’s to all of our disadvantage in the community across the board on all levels. What is to their advantage is to our disadvantage and that is what is dismissed. They know that. What’s lacking is the understanding that black people need to have in order to prevent that. Starting with standing unison as a cultural community rather than an opposing individual.

I am a african american and Nigerian, a democrat and for the most part liberal. But i disagree with yours and that professor's point of view. Although I acknowledge white supremacy, white privilege, discrimination and the problems we are dealing with still due to slavery, i do believe people have become way to sensitive and in their feelings. Many times, we scream cultural appropriation for a culture when the native culture seems it as appreciation. If i go to mexico and buy a sombrero, am i guilty of appropriation. If my friend goes to nigeria who is white or filipino and buys native attire, is it cultural appropriation? No, its not. If the person likes the style, let them wear it. We get too in our feelings about this when there are bigger things to solve.

The buying of a Sombrero hat and/or other native attire from the people who are from those very culture are not appropriation. Appropriation is something that is adopted by those who have no part in the creation or dissemination or continuation of a particular item. The Sombrero hat financially enriches the Mexican human who sells it to you. The native attire economically enriches the native people who sell it to you. What people don't realise about braids is that people of African descent enslaved as part of the Atlantic Slave trade, wore their hair in braids through all those decades/centuries. Enslaved women in South America braided their hair in a pattern that was a map of escape routes from the areas where they were enslaved to places where they would be free. No colonizer is entitled to this. It is sacrilege.

Well celebrities do get credited for everything. Rihanna has never created an original thing in her entire life and yet she is credited for everything she does. Nicki is credited for dying her hair and that aesthetic when she herself said she was inspired by Asian aesthetics. Beyonce is credited for "lemonade braids" (BTW all these credits are non official it's just media and fans who credit this stuff) The list of celebrities can really go on and on

Dr. Phil in my opinion is appropriating a therapist and a TV host. He is not conducting himself in the manner of a therapist. If he was he wouldn't have been combative with his questions and response. He hasn't attempted to get to resolution; which therapist do. Neither parties have gained new insight or respect after this show. I wouldn't pay him to be a peer mediator for a daycare let alone an adult.
So this reaction video was everything for me. I always wanted to get dreads and braids despite hearing about cultural appropriation but now I really understand it’s not about being too sensitive. I get it.

I think this argument can go both ways- yes as a biracial women she would have white experience/influence but at the same time she would also have black experience/influence. I’m biracial myself so my opinion might be influenced by that 😅 but personally I myself have had more black experience- that’s because my white father was adopted into a black family. So he never really had a white experience/influence, and having a black raised white man for a father and a black raised black woman for a mother I’ve only had that black experience/influence. I’m only saying this to say that we don’t know how she was raised, I mean that in the sense of we don’t know if she’s had both white and black experience growing up. But that’s just me, stay safe everybody 🫶🏽

Black peoples have continually vocalized that it’s preferred that non-colored people not say the word, yet they do all the time and have even normalized it in certain spaces. Congrats to reaching another platform , Dr Phil Show! People have told me wearing my hair in its natural state is not professional or your hair is prettier straight. I received statements like this from coworkers, colleagues, family and friends alike. This was some years ago when natural hair was not as accepted. Now natural styles are “in style” and “on trend.” Thankfully I love my curly hair and love myself as GOD made me. I didn’t let comments get to me and make want conform because of someones opinion. I stand you and how you feel. Black women should be able to wear their hair without worry of discrimination and remarks. We just want our respect. 💕

So what I’m hearing from you is that black woman can’t and aren’t allowed to wear blonde wigs because it’s a white person hair color and black people can’t straighten their hair because it’s a white hair style. This goes two ways lady
Straight hair isn't owned by white people so how is it a "white girl hairstyle"? There are various races with straight hair. When I flat iron my God given hair, it doesn't look or feel anything like white peoples hair. It looks and feels like my own hair straightened. Even when black women wear weaves and wigs, that hair does not come from Europe. Alot of it comes from Asian countries particularly India. As far as blonde hair, there are even black people born with blonde hair. Yes it's rare but it exists even in Africa.
However, given the history of this country and its beauty standards I'm sure at some point the blonde ideal influenced other cultures. I think dark hair is much more attractive but now days even when black women wear blonde hair, it looks absolutely NOTHING like white women's hair. We as black women have very diverse looks and skin tones. EVERY hair shade can work on a black woman depending on what her skin tone is.
Box braids are directly from our culture and there are still black women getting discriminated against for our cultural hairstyles. It isn't fair others can wear it to be cool without the discrimination and not even pay homage to where it comes from.I am not personally offended when others wear them but I do understand why some are.

The episode was very disturbing and upsetting. And the it’s an “American” thing is true, however, if you do your research, true Africans have taken offense in general about cultural things. That’s why many other countries despise Americans. It’s insensitive.

Being a black woman who was not born in the USA, I will admit that I didn’t give much thought to white women wearing our cultural braids. That’s because I come from a country where Asian culture, Indian culture, and African cultures have integrated well. However, having lived in the USA for a few years now, I understand your point of view and I completely agree with it. The racism in this country is so rampant and still very relevant in a way that it isn’t in other countries. Oftentimes in the US, appropriation isn’t appreciation; people do it to be in your face.
I agree that if some black people (EVEN IF IT WERE THE MINORITY) have an issue with it, then you shouldn’t wear it. Moreover, the nonblack person shouldn’t even want to wear it at the risk of offending. The problem is that they don’t care. Black women in the US have been discriminated against for their hair. Laws had to be passed to protect us from discrimination. That may be an uncomfortable truth for some, but ultimately… as a person who wasn’t raised here BUT can understand, I’m imploring people who can’t see her perspective to ask themselves why. Why is it that you want to wear black braids so badly at the risk of offending some black women? Is it that you do not care? If you do not care, then… why? I think that Black people who are anti black are often that way because they are not educated about our culture, what we stand for, our accomplishments and/or our history. Because when you know what it means to be a black person you will have more appreciation for it and for yourself as a black person.
If you hold no value for yourself as a black person, it is unlikely that you will even try to protect the value of other blacks and their culture. I know because for a time I used to be the same way, I wasn't necessarily anti black- I just couldn't /didn't want to understand why black people felt a certain way about certain things. I often assumed they were being dramatic because I am a black person living in a black country so I don't necessarily face any discrimination for being black, so I stubbornly believed they were making a big deal out of it. It's disgusting really.

Speaking specifically on your views towards the mixed persons experience, we can not pick and choose when we want to be black unless you are “passable”. She is not so no matter how many times she wants to fit in with the white people around her, they will always see her as black. On my personal experience as a mixed person, I don’t belong anywhere. I’m mixed with white, Mexican, and black I’ve never been able to fit in with either group. My mom’s white father and her Mexican grandfather both said we weren’t their grandchildren and my dad’s black mom always had something to say about us being mixed and hating my mom. I just feel like people need to stop saying other people have it easier when they never experienced the other person’s life. At least you have a community that accepts you.

It’s so frustrating and disrespectful when some black people are ignorant of what is clearly an issue. This is not just an American issue, it’s everywhere and thank you for speaking on this. I am a woman of African heritage, I live in the UK and love my braids especially in summer. I was having a bad hair day one day and went to work wearing a wig. To my horror, an English colleague in the admin team said she preferred my hair this way- me wearing the wig. She thought I had straightened my hair all out and even clarified that she was passing a compliment when I pulled her up on it. After this, I made sure I gave her some cultural education on the inappropriateness of her unsolicited compliment. Her comment made me very uncomfortable around her from that day, and seeing this video, I now wonder what she would’ve said to Kardashian’s braids. Discrimination still exists in 2022. You can’t even embrace your own culture without someone intentionally or unintentionally making comments that could make you feel ashamed about your heritage. I eventually left the employment but made sure a day didn’t go by without wearing my neatly done braids to prove a point to her.

I’m a white woman, 60 years of age who met her best friend in grade school who happened to be of color, our status has not changed. All of the women in my family had/have long hair down to the back of their knees, I don’t know why or when it started but I guess it’s our family thing. To anyone who has that length of hair knows what a hassle it can be at times. Around 5th grade my bestie and her mom took to me to a salon at the beginning of summer break and per their suggestion I had my hair braided into corn rows, I kept those braids in all summer (3 months) long. It had absolutely nothing to do with race, it just gave me break from dealing with long hair for the summer and it was freeing. I had my hair braided every summer for year to come even into adulthood. Different times I guess but nobody seemed to have any issues with it back then. We had more negative remarks out in public for being obvious best friends, there were some ppl who just didn’t like it and on occasion became threatening towards us but we learned to ignore it. I’m not going to claim that I fully understand bc hair braids or plats have been around in many cultures for centuries, not exclusively to any particular race but I don’t get my hair braided anymore bc I don’t want anyone to feel disrespected and I never know who’s going to take that point of view so it’s best I don’t do it anymore, even if my soul reason was for comfort.

Me as a white female never liked the other girls and I always felt like she was anti black but against I’m not black so it’s not my part to decide if she is or not. Babe Girl, when you go on shows like this it is normally always biased before you even go on the show. If it was not an issue, then they would not have had to pass that "Crown Act" in regards to women of color being fired for their hair. If a non coloured women had an interview she can take out their braids, not put on darker makeup to not look black. The woman that said that she was part black and part white is not considered black in my area of Kentucky. She has no say in the matter, NONE, AND I WISH SOMEONE WOULD COME FOR ME. I want to start this comment off by saying in a 16 year old mixed girl, I'm mixed with African American and hispanic and I know cultural appropriation is a very real thing and Ive experienced a lot of it considering I grew up in a high property black neighborhood and recently was excepted into a predominantly white school. Also you stated so many good points., and I hate how Dr. Phill continued to cut off the people who were on the side that believed cultural approbation was wrong but listen to the people who didn't think it was wrong. And the girl who was going back and forth with you is extremely anti black in a lot of her videos and talks with a lot of white people to discuss black issues, her channel is idiotic and because she was raised by a white women in a white neighborhood she's developed these wrongful idolizes. Also while watching this I had two thoughts, one I didn't like how when he " did his research "but he only researched ways to support the other side that believed cultural appropriation isn't a big deal, and I think he did it because the issues that were talked about doesn't affect him in any way. And lastly how he only supported one side the entire video. Also I would just like to say that if I was on that show I would literally tear the other side and Dr. Phill into shreds.

I'm mixed (black/white) and I've seen news story on how some black men and women are fired for wearing certain protective styles or told they need to cut/take down the styles to keep their jobs, black girls being bullied for having afros at school, punished at school for wearing braids, and I've even seen some black/ biracial girls who are half black get their hair CUT AT SCHOOL by white kids and teachers. Me personally I first learned about hair discrimination from my dad (who is white) because he once told me I shouldn't wear braids cuz my hair looks better out and I may not be able to get jobs and things like that (he also said his black god daughter has gotten bullied and things like that around her hair and he didn't want the same to happen to me) and it's so frustrating when even some non American black/ mixed people try to gaslight the community making it seem like these things don't happen when they do and have for generations now. Just shows which side of her family she gets her views from....
