I think I started being a Utd fan in 1967 (won the league - Div 1) ish but already had a Utd shirt to play football in, it wasn't until 1971 (70/71 season )though I got to my first OT game Vs Newcastle which we won.
This video captures where we had progressed to having dropped to Div 2 and bounced back in my time. Yes some FA cup wins but nothing like a league trophy - the holy grail.
So as the video says 22 years since we won the league and counting & it was 26 before Fergie cracked it.
Yes I do believe it was Mark Robins who delivered the stay of execution for Fergie. I remember the match was televised. Such a dour, rubbish match but I can remember the excitement when that header went in against Forest & I believe to this day saying that it was a sign. Forever engrained in my mind.
Then there was the 91/92 season. So near so far. We traveled everywhere in the quest. Rubbish Easter . West Ham was the nail.
Selhurst Park the following season & the news dropped in that Villa had lost 3-0. Was working nr Caerphilly the following morning. Such a sweet drive. Even got stopped for speeding at silly o'clock by the south wales police & they waved me on my way with a big grin. Reds are here, Reds are there.
Keep the faith. Once a Red ...

Probably the most thorough comment I've ever had :). I was only 13 when we won the Cup but spot on about Forest, the game and the goal, and I don't trust Edwards when he said he wouldn't have sacked him, albeit he'd just signed a new contract.
Took me a decade or two to get over 1992. If I think too much about it, I will regress to that feeling. That season and it's 'part 2', 1992/93 are also on the channel.

The comparisons between that season, which I remember wlel, and the one just gone, is uncanny... let's just hope we can go on a similar run of silverware.

I remember Norwich coming to OT that season and battering us; we were lucky to get away with a 2-0. It's why I keep telling people that we need to stick with Ten Hag; we were shite under Fergie for a good 4 years while he got the balance right. And the team which won the PL in 93 didn't much resemble the 89 team despite Fergie having signed a load of new players. Remember when we signed Pally? He was bobbins for a couple of season but ended up being the best centre half in the PL.
ETH isn't in the fortunate position of Guardiola or Slot. He hasn't inherited a top notch team. He needs to do the kid of rebuild that Fergie did.

No mention of the perfectly legit disallowed Forest goal in that 3rd round match. Fergie wouldn't have been fired on the Monday. But out of all competitions, having spunked 6.5 million, and with the league form that followed, pressure to fire him would have been irresistible.

To be fair it was given for offside, and it looks like possibly a Forest player was in an offside positions when the ball was headed towards goal but without a side-on replay, you have to trust the linesman over yours or my interpretation. Remember, in those days the rule on 'interfering with play' was more strict than all the updates since, and the potential offside player was lying next to Leighton, and the ref was perfectly placed. Regardless, every side has these 'Sliding Doors' moments, whether they are United or anyone else, either for a poor penalty decision, a sending off, anything really.
I think a 'better' call for United being fortunate would have been the semi-final replay Vs. Oldham Athletic. Early on, Nick Henry's shot crashed off the bar and according to the replay bounced behind the line, not on it as was adjudged by the officials. Fortunately, there was no goal line technology in those days. There are highlights of the game on TH-cam, even extended highlights, but that effort isn't featured. If it were, it would've been in this video, it could've decided the tie and Fergie's future.

Great finish from Martin, tbh spite the 2 young player wins, I dint remember him doing anything else good. that was enough though
