Some absolutely magic comping here from Richard Thompson, fueled by some amazing invisible communication between Loudon and Richard. Bears repeated listening, and thats before you start to concentrate on what he's singing.
@@mikelasater2016 Kinda sure it was the Loud & Rich tour of UK. However I like your name better, The Load and Rich tour. Enough ego there and self-consumption to leave quite a load in their tracks.... Weird though how that is where the good songs come from. Terrific for the counseling and shrinks' billings. Even Loud's family despite giving back as good as they've gotten from self-consumed and often missing Dad, the daughters and his son have chosen to take his name, not their clearly more present and perhaps even gifted Mom's family name of McGarrigle. Life though, Maker please be merciful, ain't either always fair or always kind. Loud does indeed get under our skins with his plainspoken and usually simply strummed or plucked songs and he is the anti-Disney to boot. He makes us look at ourselves and our own behavior and confront the less than handsome or noble behavior. Unlike the Greek tragedians, there's not even catharsis, just left-behind yuckiness and need for a cleansing shower. But damned if he ain't funny while also being true to life.... as I said to Loudon when I had the absolute privilege of meeting him at a concert in B'ham a few years ago - his voice has changed since I first saw him nearly 50 yrs ago but it's still great - just different.
Nice to see everyone admiring the underrated genius of lwiii like I do. Also think rt is an underrated guitarist and songwriter. This was a really fine show.
RT's back-up is tasteful and perfectly fitting to the melody and lyrics. Loudon, though admittedly self-consumed, has done well to try and undo his mistakes through his lyrics, thereby helping all of us~
ken carpenter Lost years I misplaced RT, I found out he was scoring and playing in movie music. What an enjoyable re-awakening I had when I dug out all his old stuff. Pure talent and genius. All the new stuff is a bonus. And, he seems to be a great guy.
Louden is so under rated and under appreciated. His originality is incredible. Not only that but his songwriting is so honest, so down to earth and real it is heart wrenching. Not only that but his voice is in such fine form still. I adore this man's approach to songwriting.....
It (Loud's voice) has gotten good. I've been shlepping to his shows since the early 70's and it was nowheres near as easy on the ears as it is now. His sense of dynamics has finally caught up to his prodigious phrasing skills where much of his charms lay way back at the beginning. All 3 of these recording artists growth in their work and play is evident from recent recordings and gigs like these. But where is this songwriters circle held? Back when there was still a Bottom Line nightclub and there is still the tiny Cornelia Street Cafe, Kettle o Fish and Fast Folk's SPEAKEASY or The Bitter then The Other End. Decades since I've been able to afford even a visit back to the city of my well-spent yoot. Is this one of chandeliered banquet hall something that is part of NYU too? Thank you for posting i had a loudon playlist on here but most of the songs were takin down. really great song by a master singer_songwriter... Thanks again
As always ít's Loudons diction, poetry, tongue, concentration + gathering good people around him that hits home... Interesting to see this Key Device mounted on Thompsons guitar :-)
@@moceanu I find it unusual that someone like RT should need such a device. Surely he can tune by ear. Maybe he just wanted to ensure perfect in tune-ness to compliment LW as perfectly as possible. But interesting the different colours, I wonder if the red means some kind of in tune harmonic notes or something. I have the basic model, which only has the one colour of green, but has like a flickering arrow that settles in the middle of the range and goes green when the note is perfectly in tune. I couldn't do without it, as I can't tune by ear. Although I beleieve that most musicians can do this with ease after maybe some time of playing.
@@suesjoy Love that song and it ain't only professionals in show biz and promotion biz that keep spelling it wrong. Been poor, for a long time, so I had to get stuff from dead man... And it feels like that... It's a gloomy feeling. Dead man pants and a dead man shirt... Damn...
That's a shame, I'll take that to heart. Don't want to trample on your preferences, do we? Surely there is nothing more important. Some people have different opinions to you, get over it.
Great song, really powerful and Richard Thompson's playing is sublime.
Richard is unbelievable on this.
A pensioner with a berret is definitely something
I can confidently say that Loudon is one of the best song writers of our time. The quality of his body of work spanning over 50 years is astounding.
i agree and the same is true of the guy at the other end of the stage.
i agree and the same is true of the guy at the other end of the stage.
💯
No matter how many times I watch this I am still moved and shaken by this song and he.
Three favorite singer songwriters of last 50 years.
Canada - Stan Rogers
Ireland - Gilbert O'Sullivan
USA - Loudon Wainwright III
Amen
Don’t forget to throw in John Prine.

I hear ya. Been listening to it all day... Richard is _in the zone_...
Three of my favorite songwriters.
Me too! I watch this videos whenever they pop up! I need to compile them into a playlist!
I , too lost my father in 88...It still feels like yesterday. Thanks for bearing your soul for us brother. Carry on wayward son
So Loudon..... love RT's guitar work as well. Thank You.
Beautiful performance from two of the great folk singer songwriters, love it
Why not 3? Each deserves a place in pantheon....

Magic, just magic.
Wow! Really great. Richard's accompaniment is masterful.
***** More is less
They did tour together once. The Load and Rich tour. I'm sure they did many numbers together. Sorry I missed it.
I wish ALL aspiring musicians would watch this concert.

Wow, my favorite song... You gotta love the bloke. This is genius... Love that...
You better be on top of you game to play on stage with these folks…Which of course he is, Richard Thompson accompanying sure doesn’t hurt.

Great song about life and the shit that comes with it :) got to love it.
Excellent song and genius lyrics. Love it
One of the great all time live performances! just beautiful.
Brilliant lyrics. Just amazing.
Enjoyed this guy for ever
A very great and meaningful song
RT's accompaniment takes this song to a whole other level
what a man! brilliant. seen him in the 70s at birmingham townhall.
Always able to capture another perspective always brilliant ALWAYS Genius he never let you down

As always, with Loudon, what you hear is what you get; no extraneous b.s. and no frivolous non-sense. Sometimes repetitive, but always original.
Love that song.
As always ít's Loudons diction, poetry, tongue, concentration + gathering good people around him that hits home... Interesting to see this Key Device mounted on Thompsons guitar :-)
it's a guitar tuner and it's a very common and cheap device
Was going to ask, then I saw your observation.

Sublime. I'd like to see Loudon and Richard record together
Erm... They have LOTS of times. Check out 'Reader and advisor', to name one. ;)

This performance is great!
So Powerful...
This song gives me this feeling that i can't describe. It's a feeling between happy and sadness. It's not a bad feeling but...idk....
dark and beautiful
Powerful.
wow !

Well, that’s life.
Loudon!
Genius
WOW...
Very good
this is some heavy shit
The old Loudo does it again - much prefer his grim terrifying stuff to his chirpy annoying stuff.
I'd prefer it if you didn't make any remarks. Half of Loudon's output? Not too much of a generalization. STFU.
That's a shame, I'll take that to heart. Don't want to trample on your preferences, do we? Surely there is nothing more important. Some people have different opinions to you, get over it.
Probably a snowflake hiding in a safe bunker! ;-)
I love his serious dark stuff, but for me, the lighter stuff balances it out... been a fan since 1971
Wow is right!
If you dug this, check out "Surviving Twin."
Couldn't agree the little that he did only added to a fine performance
Why cant i find this on Spotify >.
Because Spotify is for losers who are only interested in big sellers? ;)
Is this song on the "Rich & Loud" album That Richard Thompson and Loudon Wainwright III did together?
This song is on the box set "40 Odd Years". I don't think there is a Loud & Rich album, though they do occasionally tour together.
Jonny Depp in 'Dead Man' is so cool cos his best friend is 'Nobody'..very nice guitars eh..
whats vega doing there other than watch genius at work
She does so respectfully. No prima donna. Its obvious who the geniuses are. Cheers.
What Loudon Wainwright album is Dead Man on? I can't find it on iTunes?
I am dead man too...
Is this available on DVD?
does anyone know where the tab for this is?
I think it's funny that RT's tuner was on the whole time.
It must have had a job keeping up!!!!
Fucking genuine
he rocked and he didn't even have an amp
with all these louden songs, dead puppies is no where to be seen. what, too controversial?
" THEY SPELT MY NAME WRONG AGAIN...". !!!!... Christ almighty Kelly - get with it.
Guess we can agree to disagree.
Wish RT had just left Loudon to it...
Loudon is such an unbelievable artist, lyrical genius and by god can he play! Comedy gold too.
Thanks for posting this video man, I appreciate it.
Do you think RT gets it? You know... the subject matter? Oh the irony...
Suzanne vega totally out of her depth between these two
Suzanne is OK right where she is.
She's the best singer on that stage. Richard's the best guitarist, Loudon's the best raconteur and entertainer, but Suzanne is the better singer.
