Unrequited to the Nth Degree was my most listened song on my streaming service a few years ago. This must be the tenth or so of my top 20 artists that’s been on the show so far…someone’s got wonderful taste in music! Love this so so much 🎶
Of course it would be the class act, Colbert, that brings us one of the true greats in American music, Loudon Wainwright III. Been watching him perform since the mid '70s. Loved his recent book, "Liner Notes".
Discovered this gentleman way back in 74, when DEAD SKUNK was on the radio. Did not know for a long time how good, how excellent of a songwriter and singer Loudon was and is. So glad that he is still with us, still writing beautiful and powerful new songs, and WOW! his voice is still strong at 77!
This song is from his Therapy album (one of my favorite tracks from it). And the other song "Father and Son" that he did on Colbert, was from his History album. These two albums, plus "More Love Songs" (the one before Therapy) got constant airplay from me through the early to mid 80s. And so seeing him perform these two songs is just an awesome gift to me and the world. I still go back and listen to Therapy everyone once in a while. Absolute genius songwriter! Thank you Loudon!!
I've loved you for {gasp} 51 years, since I was a junior in high school! You never stop writing beautiful songs with gorgeous, heartrending lyrics. You're a treasure.
Been a fan since the early 70s and saw him live in England in the 80s and 90s. Made the mistake once of going for a beer or two before the show and trying to sneak out mid-performance to take a leak. He stopped half way through a song and shouted if I was leaving early not to forget to buy an LP in the foyer on the way out!
Beautiful malady and a wonderful beginning of my day. I should listen to more music of him. I already knew about his music by way of the song "The Man who couldn't Cry" when Johnny Cash covered that. Loved that one too.
Wow, I can't hardly believe this...Yesterday I pulled a Wainwright album out and jammed with it. "Me and the Cat". Amazing. Also, Saw Louden with Mahavishnu Orchestra in 1973 in Los Angeles. 😁😎
Hard working entertainer that has delivered so much to so many for so long. Thanks Loudon and you keep on. Hope they spelled it right. This heart has never grown less fond.
I have been a huge fan of Loudon since I was a student. I saw him live in Dublin in '75, he was so witty and fun, a legend. I also loved the McGarrigle sisters. This week I will see Rufus at Fuji Rock. have been waiting to see him pre covid. rufus has a golden voice....

"Oh Tokyo, They got some saki, and sashimi, and some clean sheets, Oh, kimono, oh, kimono... Tokyo's the town that I love the best, East may be East, and West may be West, Forget about between, it'll drive you insane, And teach you things you never knew before."
I learned a few songs from his LP, including Dead Skunk, was pleasantly surprised when it got on the radio & folks asked me if it was me! 🤪 Saw him in a College cafeteria in Brighton, UK.
I was very impressed by the 1st time I heard this Song - it was on a West Virginia Radio Show (Mountain Stage) compilation w/a Rick Danko Song (which was enough for me to spend some). This may be his own best - not unlike Solar Sex Panel for John Hiatt (& done by Little Village). Very crafty way of making words feel 'natural' & meant to be in that order. That makes sense, right?
I got to meet him after a show at the backstage in Seattle a hundred years ago 😎. He was very polite and funny, even though my friend lied to get me into the room with him. He knew. Just mentioning the bottom line from ny had some pull I guess. Seriously, great dude. 👍🤪🏳️🌈
Whats wrong with you? Last time when Paul Simon performed i thaught there is no worse tired version of his hit! Now again - dont you notice the lack of dynamics? Is there no younger artists in this show to enjoy?
I’m 57 and have grown up my entire life with his songs. I told him this in Dublin and he replied “then we grew up together”. Love the man.
What a cool thing to say. 💞
Thank you Stephen, for having an actual folk singer on! They are nearly invisible and extinct in the music offerings of the masses these days.

Dude's a national treasure.
Such a great tune

Yes...I still remember him doing Dead Skunk live at the free Cambridge Commons Sunday concerts. Soooo good. Great to see him still going strong

Fuck it, I'm commenting twice.
What a phenomenal songwriter and what a great tune

Oh Loudon! We love you

Incredible what a guitar, strumming and an old man singing passionately can do to your Spirit ! Sublime. Thanks.

I love the respect and administration you can see in Stephen's face:)
The days of the troubadours are still alive and well.
Many lessons - many blessings.

So so so so so so good. Loudon has the best lyrics and the best damn delivery.
Saw him live last year. Probably seen him in concert over 30 times since 1979, superb as always. You keep doing what you’re doing Loudo.
Awesome and goosebumps too !!!
Great to see you
I found Loudon through his songs on the Knocked Up soundtrack. The movie was ok Loudon is awesome! 😊
Can’t believe I am just hearing this talented musician at 59! He reminds me of Harry Chapin. Love the music Colbert show shares with us ✨✌🏼
Drop everything and listen to History
Love this song so much - one of the few songs i taught myself on guitar. Brilliant lyrics.
the smartest ever - always has been - a genius original -never sold out- love his guitar playing too - never enough Loudon
I first saw Loudon when he appeared in a couple of episodes of M*A*S*H. Great! Poet Emeritas!
_Dead Skunk_ hit #16 on the charts a few years before that.

You don't follow threads very well - 1972 is a few years before LWIII's first appearance in M.A.S.H.

It’s always so good to hear from LWII.
LWIII.
He was in Tim Burton's wild movie Big Fish 20 years ago. Hard Day on the Planet is a favorite song of mine from the mid 80's
"Oh Tokyo,
They got some saki, and sashimi,
and some clean sheets,
Oh, kimono, oh, kimono...
Tokyo's the town that I love the best,
East may be East, and West may be West,
Forget about between, it'll drive you insane,
And teach you things you never knew before."
He made it further glad to see her rise
A man who ‘knows’. 😊
My man, Loudon. I'm with you, Stephen.
I learned a few songs from his LP, including Dead Skunk, was pleasantly surprised when it got on the radio & folks asked me if it was me! 🤪 Saw him in a College cafeteria in Brighton, UK.
This gentleman was a guest star in an episode of M .A.S.H. if my memory serves me correctly.
On Mash he played Captain Spaulding, a Groucho Marx character
❤

Make America Folk Again
I like his “That’s My Daughter in the Water”.
One he did not write, but probably wishes he had.
He didn't write that one. It's a song by Peter Blegvad th-cam.com/video/MM2OfKvXdrA/w-d-xo.htmlsi=28joawIO7PTnF_Zo
19!
“There he goes, there’s what’s his name, I saw him on TV”
Kate and Anna McGarrigle were more my thing, but… he’s still brilliant.
I still like his cover of The Swimming Song better than their original, it almost seems written for him.
💕 🎶
Amazing show soft song
Is soft bad?
Goddamn.
Oh, Tokyo…we got some sake and sashimi and some clean sheets oh kimono KIMONO!
Music 🎵🎶🎵 is good. ẞf
Sounds similar to Bob Dylan.
Loudon did some episodes of M*A*S*H early on. And he is Rufus' father.
What album is this from? I can’t find it.
gee I'd love tp know who he's talking about
Vacation receipts
Memento optimistic
Sunset backdrop prints
See ya, Taylor Swift. 👋

For half of that, he looked as though he was fighting against a bad bout of constipation. Nice song though.
Love this guy, but this song is bizarre. He has stuff I like better.
Deadbeat dad, yet another one.
