We didn't get to see much but knowing they were childhood friends is truly heart-wrenching and that Gi hun's kindness letting Sang woo live made him want Gi hun to win, or to simply end his own suffering, tragic but amazing storytelling. This editing and pairing of the scenes took me on a rollercoaster ride, beautiful work.
sangwoo needed the money even more than his own life If gihun gave up everything to save sangwoo, there's no chance for him to get that amount of money. So he eliminated himself so that maybe, with gihun's generosity, his mother won't suffer by his mistake.
This actually made me cry, the fact that Gi-Hun and Sang-Woo were childhood best friends but one ended up dying, and the fact that Gi-Hun went from being kindhearted to violent as he tried to kill Sang-Woo, and he realised what he did to him at the end. Gi-Hun’s scream is absolutely heartbreaking after Sang-Woo took his own life at the end, great editing skills too, it just shows how desperate they were throughout this that they resorted to killing each other.
I love how Gi Hun dropped his empathetic nature towards him at the end before the fight, grew a backbone and said everything that needed to be said. Such a good payoff for the character.
This is sad. Sang-woo was one of my favorite characters in the show because I can personally relate to his motivation and I can't hate him for anything he did.

I was honestly surprised I cried as hard as Go Hun at Sang Woo’s last moments. Also Gi Hun’s sobs are heart wrenching. What a performance from his actor.
I cried a lot too, much more than episode 6 which surprised me as well... Maybe the shock factor had something to do with it, in 6 it was purposefully predictable (but still heartbreaking) and in 9 I was like WAIT OMG DID HE JUST STAB HIMSELF WTF
Yeah, Sang-Woo was definitely the most realistically written character of the show. If in his position, we all would have done what he did to try and win. Greed is vicious, and the need to win will consume anybody, no matter how good of a person you think you are.
Sang woo was one of those people "absorbed and thrashed" by the system, he tried and failed to become a succesful/rich man even if everyone expected so from him (being handsome and educated from a prestigious university). During the game he ended up betraying his own allies purposely, to the point he realized to have lost not only his youth goals but also his humanity... in the last game he faced Gi Hun as an empty man, he sacrificed everything for his own survival and a second chance in life. This left him with only 2 options...to win the game in order to justify his bad actions or to die. Coming back alive with Gi Hun was never an option for him, he couldn't have lived a good life knowing what he did during the game and without those money in his bank account always reminding him why he did those things. On the contrary, Gi Hun realized that nothing in the world is true and good if you get it sacrificing yourself and your beliefs.

There was that interview where the actor nd director were talking about sangwoos actions nd that he might have been jealous of how honest, straightforward and accepting gihun can be which sangwoo is unable to do coz of his pride nd thus kept trying to justify all the shit he did till now which was also wearing him down. He got tired of carrying his mental burdens nd couldn't possibly go out nd live like that without the money so he killed himself.

The difference is that Gi Hun has always been a simple man, no one expected a lot from him even if he was good ad heart. Sang woo was the winning horse for his neighbours, the one who studied at the prestigious university and a handsome man, considered to be clever as well.... he had all the cards to succeed in life but still he failed and this is why he was a broken man from the beginning, while Gi Hun had to choose wisely in order to protect his family and friends.
sang woon the hero who became a villain, in my opinion he did the right thing, which was to survive in a game where everyone fights for their survival and is bribed with money, if it is true that he had no regrets with there and with others, he killed for survive, but in the final fight with his best friend that "sorry" said it all... it made me very nostalgic
Sang woo did what he needed to do to survive never saw him as a bad guy. in fact everything he did you can see it was destroying him. Excellent video excellent performance throughout the whole series.

one of the most complex and heartbreaking relationship i've seen on tv in a while. you've captured it beautifully. their fall out will forever be painful but fascinating to watch. how gi-hun stops believing his words and starts seeing him clearly, starts changing himself, succumbing to the cruelty of the games. when you are put in an unfair life or death situation it's so hard to hold on to everything that makes us human. even if sang-woo won i doubt he will be able to live normally with the heavy weight of guilt on his shoulders, because while he did all those fucked up things he never took pleasure in that, he's a very rational and strategic person but even he would not be able to escape the emotional turmoil after the games (and he was already suicidal so i can only guess what he would do once he realizes that money problems is now the least of his 99 problems) he killed himself to foremost save his mom and then his friend, who saw him clearly at last but still refused to give up on him. but i also like to think that even in this moment he recognises the potential and thinks that it makes more sense for gi-hun to come back to society, not him. if players are horses then sang-woo bets on gi-hun to make it after the games. so he takes the knife. p.s. i also think that he would've never been able to live with himself if he did kill gi-hun that time. his mind races to justify his actions in any suitable way, even if it means lying to himself. with dalgona? well he didn't know for sure what the challenge was so if his teammates were to die it's simple misfortune. with ali? well he barely knew the guy, it's his fault to trust someone in this game of survival. with that guy on the bridge? the timer was almost done, he couldn't afford to wait any more and he won't let this guy's uncertainty be the death of him and those two behind him. with sae-byeok? she was dying anyway, if anything he let her drift off more painlessly. with gi-hun? he's holding the knife, he's attacking, if anything it'll be self-defense but with gi-hun now? when he's proposing to give up, when he's looking at him so hopeful? now THAT would be just murder and he knows it. and sang-woo is a survivor, not a murderer. p.s.s ALSO (sorry but none of my friends know the show and im OBSESSED and need to get some observations out of my chest) i believe gi-hun figured out that sang-woo knew about the dalgona but decided to let it slip and keep the peace, but mostly probably lied to himself that whatever he thinks is not true and he should believe in sang-woo. gi-hun is very empathetic and sang-woo practically reeked of guilt. that's why when gi-hun finally confronts him it's so much more satisfying but also just as much heartbreaking. i think judgemental words from such a kind and forgiving person like gi-hun probably felt like bullets to sang-woo. gi-hun was like a sniper in that scene, using his mouth instead of the trigger and not gonna lie, he hit the bull's eye. but their words tho. "you're here because of this man who knew how to differentiate the tiles" and "no, im here because im willing to do anything to survive", that's literally how they operate. sang-woo is very intelligent and he uses that to his advantage any time he can. he really did survived that long because he actively made all the hard decisions. gi-hun made it this far because of all the good people around him and pure luck, and he never forgets it. gi-hun needed the team because he needed someone he can trust, sang-woo need the team because he knew that his chances of winning will get higher. that's why their team was so unbalanced, it had two leaders, one calculating and one empathetic, one rational and one emotional and they both strongly believed in their own ideologies, they were pulling in opposite directions. while gi-hun was playing the games to survive, sang-woo played them to win. where gi-hun shared, sang-woo kept it to himself. where gi-hun waited, sang-woo pushed. and i believe there is just no scenario where gi-hun kills sang-woo. even that first time when kang sae-byeok stopped him, there's no way he would've actually done that. he remembers all the people who helped him get this far and sang-woo is one of them, sang-woo contributed big time to gi-hun's survival. it can never feel right to take his life after all of it.
